Didn't really get the point of the article. I thought he'd be keen on less cars parked on our streets as many, particularly in urban areas, will see see the benefit of summoning a driverless vehicle, ultimately an autonomous pod, to take them to their destination, including transport hubs.

Have been using it this week, had just clocked what you said. Bizarre!

AI is already improving diagnostics. Dunno about robots 😊

Great tyre place. But no your tyre is fxd

Would be XX rated if it was Rumours, but no doubt one hell of a party

They have been on the horizon, not 'next year', and have to go through both the development ana approval process. The one person who has used them on this this thread, rates them. So I respect their views not what I heard from Bill down the pub So when your life is saved by a surgeon with the help of AI are you going to think the same? Seem to be a lot of luddites on this forum

Totally unnecessary post. As per my earlier post what is this directly got to do with local authorities?

Hopefully the Canada Geese were being culled - I'm being serious. It's permitted

Rather daft comment. As said we have been getting rid of jobs ever since the horse was domesticated. What on earth has this all got to do with the local authority? I's called rightly or wrongly progress.

Grin and bear it. Don't wish your life away....

West Dulwich LTN Action Group - needs your support

Pizza place/bar near the station in Peckham. No doubt other places too. I've not been in McDonalds since the 90s and probably less than five times in my life, KFC even longer ago. As a kid we went to old school Wimpys where you were served at the table, there are a few left eg Bermondsey (the takeaway part was sold to BK in the 90s leaving a small rump of old school Wimpy cafes.

Yes I would use one Technology has taken jobs ever since we domesticated the horse. We are about to go through one hell of a step change due to AI. Do you still expect there to be a petrol pump attendant, lift attendant, and cashier? Although I detest restaurants where someone doesn't take your order 😭 Of course the benefit will be that low skilled and low paid jobs will go, with hope that there will be more high skilled and high paid jobs. There is always a shortage of truckers so some alternative careers in driving.

West Dulwich LTN Action Group - needs your support
malumbu replied to Rashmipat's topic in Roads & Transport
Oh dear, selective reporting..... From Lambeth's website: The Streatham Wells LTN was suspended on Thursday 7 March at 1pm. The suspension was announced as a result of concerns about public transport delays and the anticipated impact on the A23 due to construction work. Transport for London (TfL) will begin a £9 million project on the A23 to substantially upgrade the experience for walking and cycling, starting at the end of spring and continuing into 2025. These improvement works will necessarily require some reduced road capacity while this major investment takes place. Alongside this investment, we are working with TfL to implement a comprehensive package of bus priority measures along the length of the A23 to separate buses from general traffic and help prevent bus delays in future. Sorry to disappoint you, there was no order for it to be scrapped. -

Out of interest how does affect you all? I'm a casual observer and simply post a few views and question some of the things that are said. When the discussion broadens, onto other things you don't like/don't agree on, then someone questions this, you then shut it down. Lime bikes are popular. Parking them can be annoying at times, but many use them. They are not going away, and they will have some reduction in car use. Charging for parking will have an affect on car journeys and ownership. I expect your main issue continues to be your dislike of everything Southwark, stemming from the LTN. Just trying to get my head around the volume of posts.

Ummh, not sure where you have got this comment about me and Southwark, I support actions by local authorities to discourage driving and promote active travel and public transport. Driving can be a difficult habit to break, I've been involved in the past indirectly on behaviour change. This is achieved through (a) good citizenship, (b) financial measures such as ULEZ and the congestion charge (and I would like fuel duty to be raised to previous levels taking into account inflation) (c) hard measures such as road restrictions (d) incentives There has been good work by government in the 90s and 00s but since the Supreme Court ordered the government to sort out air quality ASAP in 2015, post Covid and particularly post Uxbridge, central government has abdicated much of the responsibility leaving this to local authorities. (a) generally doesn't work as I consider is demonstrated by OneDulwich, and by the Lambeth outcome. Here opponents, in this case LTNs, say they believe in addressing climate change and poor air quality, yet it seems to me that many do not want the perceived inconvenience of restrictions on driving, but do not have alternative proposals bar kicking issues into the grass through eternal consultation. Yes, I do understand that not everyone objecting drives/owns a car. (d) the Heathrow study was very disappointing, a number of simple measures and incentives such as car sharing for the commute failed to have a significant impact. Increased costs (b) has a limited impact due to inelasticity of demand, there is not a straight forward response to raising costs. Leaving hard measures. (c). What is really disappointing is that the first three posts after my one responding to you, just dissed measures to support active travel. @Earl Aelfheah thanks for addressing some of the mistruths. I don't have in depth knowledge of Melbourne Road and I'm interested in the big picture rather than specifics. I can't even remember whether the main concern is that residents will have to have permits or shoppers may have to pay for parking, I thought the detail wasn't out yet. I like much of what our local authorities have done to promote cycling, I expect about three quarters of my cycling is in Southwark, both commuting, for work and for pleasure. But the changes to Brenchley Gardens are awful, it was already a dangerous road already due to some of the speeds of some drivers either side of the speed camera, the changes did not address this and worse there is no room for a driver to pass a cyclist at a safe distance when there is traffic in both directions. @tiddles Why did you like Lordship's nasty post? Toxic, and doesn't help reasonable/rational debate.

Consumerism. Buy buy buy. Unnecessary energy and raw material use. Fast fashion. Single use products. Thankfully most expensive consumer goods are far more reliable than the last century. Oddly enough globalisation has helped, although the danger of China dominating is a worry This whole concept that we have to increase our spending on consumer goods goods to improve our quality of life is an odd one. Meanwhile the masses want cheaper food. If there was ever a sector where the country could benefit from increasing quality this one is it. Noting if course that not all have the resources to do this, but I wonder how many prioritise consumer goods over essentials Anyway a simplistic view and a lounge conversation. And yes, congestion does have an economic costs. @Spartacus Here's some light reading https://research.library.fordham.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1162&context=environ_2015#:~:text=Annual increases in the consumption, energy use%2C and ecosystem collapse. @first mate I stopped myself posting the question on whether the threat of war is good for growth. I'll return the subject of the thread, but found it bizarre to use consumerism as an argument against CPZs.

At it's peak I recall 16 Furkin pubs, all brewing their own. The first pub was the Goose, followed by the Ferret, the wonderful Pheonix, Fox and one other, not necessarily in that order, when I discovered them. I did all 16 on public transport in one day with a group many years ago, if Guinness had a record this would be one, as everyone else would hire a minibus. Reverting to Wiki, it maxed out with 19 home brew pubs, and many more not brewing before the end: chain was established in 1979 by David Bruce as Bruce's Brewery, the Firkin Brewery grew as a chain of mostly brewpubs offering cask ale. It was acquired by Midsummer Leisure in 1988, Stakis Leisure in 1990 and then by Allied Domecq in 1991; by 1995 the chain had 44 pubs, 19 of which brewed beer on site.[1] In 1999, Punch Taverns bought the entire chain and the rights to the Firkin brand,[2] and then sold 110 of the pubs to Bass, leaving 60 Firkin pubs under Punch ownership.[3] The brewery side of the chain was wound up, and in March 2001 Punch announced that the Firkin brand was to be discontinued.[4]

Poundland East Dulwich soon to be replaced by Tesco Express
malumbu replied to satsuma's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I used to enjoy the 50p shop in Liverpool, it merged with it's sister pound shop in 1999 https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/newsliverpool/lost-liverpool-shop-never-charged-more-than-50p-for-anything/ar-AA1rB1Z6 According to BoE inflation calculator it would be the £1.60 shop if still around now, although based on the increase in a pint of beer more like the £4 shop, or the reliable mars bar inflation indicator about £3. That of course is the issue with the premise that everything will remain at a certain price. There were three pound stores in Peckham, one had a strange strap line that many products were a pound or less, so many were over a quid (pre Covid days). -
What a nasty post. Do you believe in censorship? That's the way it reads to me. I am an expert on transport issues, you may not agree with me but that is no reason to just dismiss me.

So I think what you and others are saying it that you don't want scooter bays, bike hangers and double yellow lines. That cars come first, not pedestrian safety, encouraging residents to have a more active life style, and the personal mobility that hire bikes and scooters bring. A message that is implied by a number of you. Well at least you are honest.
