  1. It is regulated. A general plea to all, do a bit of research before you post. Well at least this forum isn't as alarmist as WhatsApp and Twitter - big dig at the Street WhatsApp that even has a nutter antivaxer who posts all types of conspiracy theory. Back to the subject, smokeless area, ban on some solid fuels including wet wood and burners need to be approved, properly fitted etc. More regulation is needed.....

  3. All woodburners bad in urban areas. Do you have a guilty secret?! Some are simply worse than others. Biomass burners in properly designed burners are a separate matter. I doubt whether many have these in SE22
  4. That was a daft comment and is not in the slightest bit helpful. It also made me login on my mobile, I've not posted for tonks on it. So that shows how silly it was. Funnily enough you should alert the local authority but not sure how they would respond. We have a neighbour I expect has been burning unseasoned wood and the street smelt like a bonfire I know shed loads on the subject, PMs from wood burners has been known about for at least a decade but I expect DEFRA/government does not want to upset either nice metropolitan professionals or middle England country folk. Of course these nice urban professionals should know better. More later when I have a proper keyboard. Back to mobile phone exile
  5. Why? Unless you want re-nationalising of the electricity generators and suppliers. Otherwise how will we keep these profiteers in line? Not sure if my spelling and grammar are correct but I am talking about blank cheques/licenses to print money
  6. So simple question, what will Grant Shapps and his Dept of Energy Security and Net Zero have to do to meet government's objective of net zero by 2030. He didn't do a great job at DfT. Fundamental behaviour change, hard interventions and serious money eg insulation, public transport and technical solutions (as we fall behind our EU cousins.....
  7. No definitely foreign, probably illegal immigrants posing as asylum seekers. But to be serious, they don't look like type to get into a violent argument and perhaps a "how dare you, take your rubbish away" may have been appropriate. Very different to the builders' waste, tyres etc that seem to be an illegal business on roads in North Kent etc. Edited - ah OK, doorbell camera so expect you didn't see. You can report to police and Soutwark, it may not be a one off www.southwark.gov.uk/street-care/fly-tipping
  8. Perfect timing. I had planned to respond earlier to DKH 1. that I was hoping to provoke a wider discussion with those very opposed to restrictions on motorists. Sadly Spartacus has referred to some manufactured culture war that many resort to (all that tit for tat nonsense) rather than some deeper views on what the new department should be doing to cut CO2 and other climate change agents. [although maybe he/she was doing what I do and lob the odd grenade in- if so well done you got me. 2. I think that this is indicative of a vocal minority in this area and similar metropolitan areas, those who support improved air quality and reduced emissions, until it affects them. Very different to Tory heartlands where there is resistance to anything that tries to drag us kicking and screaming out of our cars. And that includes most outer boroughs, and some inner too. So essentially the new energy departments needs some substance in interventions, both soft and hard. On other matters I am peed off at the downgrading of DCMS. Something that has been happening for some time.
  9. So DECC is back again. Bonkers closing it down in the first place. And this is on the day that BP announced its biggest ever profits and that they were scaling down their move to reduce fossil fuel extraction. And so many discussions on the ED local matters on this website are motorists complaining about restrictions. Well that's an invite for them to join in the wider discussion but unfortunately the Lounge appears dead as a dodo.
  10. You misread my post. Where a school has problems, and you get many of the brighter local kids going elsewhere, it will quickly get a reputation and as the number of more able students declne, results fall, and it can get into a cycle of decline. Schools should be able to cater for a wide variety of backgrounds and abilities - OK, house prices, gentrification etc will mean there are those that will have a catchment area who are more able, But competion for schooll place is a double edged sword. That's a whole subject of it's own, one where I have personal experience but not really for this thread, I've been simplistic in my views, other factors come into play such as facilities, head teacher, general teaching ethos etc. Not sure if there is a correlation between those prepared to get school places which result in a drive, and antisocial parking, Others may know,
  11. Penguin, hats off (either intentionally or otherwise) for raising the serious downside of competition in state schools. You get improving schools and failing schools rather than working to improve all schools, And the outcome is the extended school run. sweetgirl - I assume that you are being facetious with regards to "a war on motorists" although rathger unsbutle. If not you sound like an entitled motorist who believe that you can do what you like and sod everyone else.
  12. I'm trying not to be a vigilante and report drivers for selfish parking, but the three vehicles on the zig zags outside the Turkish supermarket on FH Road was very tempting Disappointing if the school is not doing more, I cycle through the area fairly regularly and outside of school drop off is quiet. We were part of a campaign a number of years ago at another school not so far away to discorage parents from anti social parking. Leafletting with a police motorocyclist on the first day. We'd occasionally get shouted at, but after a few days less people were parking illegally. Another parent organised a walking bus/crocodile. But then the kids moved to secondary school and the next generation had the same issues. Without trying to sound pompous surely the demographics would result in some sort of similar parent action in local schools. I say things to schools from time to time - those parking on double yellows outside of the primary on Grreendale - teacher outside said they were fully aware and told parents not to do this - whilst the parent was sitting in their car. And hats off to Alleyns too when I called their reception on Thursday to report a coach outside the school with its engine running. Bessemer Grange is brilliant on supporting active travel.
  13. Hats off to Penguin for some honesty - yes for many this thread is simply anti-bike and pro car and should be re-labelled as such. Others pretend to support environmental friendly transport but then put up barriers (oh public transport isn't good enough, cycle infrastructure isn't good enough, the pavements aren't good enough etc) when I expect you are closet piston heads. Anyway some banter for the weekend not light the blue touch paper and retire. But what does puzzle me is the nonsense at my expense. In my 4000 plus posts where do I say cars should be banned?, I don't live in any sustainable living community where I grow all my own food, extract minerals and metals, fabricate these into every day consumer objects, shelter etc. I think that may have ended after the iron age. As I've posted numerous times it's about smarter car use, less car use etc. How much this is done by penalising 'unecessary' car use (and how this is defined)/promoting alternatives is up to our elected representatives coupled with good citizenship. After 60 years of pro car culture the latter is one hell of a challenge. So gone are the days where we should drive how we want, where we want, when we want, want we want, how we want. The latter being exemplified by falling vehicle occupancies ie cars that are on average only 2/5ths full. Anyway I'll leave you to continue to debate corruption in City Hall and the town hall, incompetence, manufactured cultyure wars and misuse of data. Or whatever. Edited to add - most people can cycle if they chose to. Go back 70 years and many did out of economic necessity.
  14. Yes metal containers but I spend enough on feed and don't want to spend loads on these. The blighters don't get often ie opportunist. I'll continue checking out thePosh Junk shop for cheap recepticles.
  15. Talking about rats any suggestions for cheap rat and rat with long fluffy tails containers to keep my bird food in, in the shed. They chew through paper and plastic. The rat in the shed was dispatched.
  16. Just wondering whether anyone with a reasonable sized car can help transport some furniture to our French holiday home, in return I'll be offering a free stay. Sadly the area does not have great public transport, but traffic is very light and unlike the Brits the French give a lot of respect to cyclist so it is lovely to walk and cycle. An alternative to driving to Brittany is to cycle down, which I have a couple of times. Happy to provide advice on routes, ferries and how to combine cycling with trains as necessary. Not sure why my French interests were put up on the LTN thread but thanks for the free publicity.
  17. https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/rail-penalty-fare-value-reform/outcome/penalty-fare-value-reform-consultation-outcome Noting very few repondents so either the public are unaware or not bothered. Going up to £100 (50% off early payment) shortly Have we all at times travelled with the wrong ticket or wrong train? Or do we get what we deserve.... It's about proportionality/discretion. If I make an innocent mistake then I hope the guard will understand (as they have a few times over the years). If I'm a serial fare doger then do hit me hard financially,
  18. But it's not that simple. You point out some of the benefits of the state of Israel, but there are many wrongs which fan the fire of extremism - rightly or wrongly - and the move to the right/nationalism/the orthodox isn't likely to improve things. Of course its a fuggin mess across the region (to which the Western powers very much contributed) and I don't have any simple answers. Visted almost 30 years ago staying with people on both sides - very much separate societies. Jerusalem was a wonderful melting pot which I understand development is very much spoiling
  19. Non-progressive subsidence means there has been historical movement - as most houses say 1950s or before will have had in the area due to shrinkage and expansion of the clay soil and as pointed out bombing in the area. This link may be helpful for the latter http://bombsight.org/explore/greater-london/southwark/east-dulwich/ I doubt if any of our doorways are square or floors are level. The area will have taken a pounding during the droughts of 76 and last year. Subtarreanean (basement) works are also becoming a worry, From experience Direct Line wont touch properties with any subsistence in the area. I'm not sure if you have a full structural survey - trouble is it takes some time to check whether movement is ongoing - although if it has already been assessed as non-progressive a professional is happy to say that this is not onging. If the term historical movement had been used I expect all parties would be more relaxed

Throwing money at Furlough was probably necessary. An alternative would have been to tough it out, far more deaths, collapse of NHS etc. I'm sure someone more astute than me can do an economic comparison. The mistake by economists across the world was to encourage consumer spending across the western world when there was a global shortage of raw materials and products. And as regards to the cheap snipe at Brown from the subsequent poster your time would be better reading up on the subject. There are a few articles out there but most of them are in the Guardian which some won't agree with. I reckon Brown's excess of public spending during the good time, and encouraging the boom and bust he was opposed to had less if an impact than Osbourne's unecessary austerity, widening the gap between rich and poor, squeezing public sector salaries resulting in the current time bomb Over to you Cat, you can't start the chat and then run away. Good result for Murray yesterday!
  21. We get our laptops from John Lewis. I'm getting my new PC build from Compufix, 171 Old Kent Road, under their previous name modern computers they built my last one (and owner did admonish me that it was 14 years old) and done various repairs over the years. Low profile regards to reviews one on Google (five star) and one on Next Door. Don't cycle your old PC in, as I did today, as it is not the easiest thing to attach to your rack, and I'll not do that with the new one.
  22. Wow Rocks. In the last 3 months you've posted about 90 times about the LTN, vented your anger about Dulwich square and Lime bikes about 20 times, but only a handful of times about other matters. Water mains leaks were a short distraction With all that drive and determination perhaps devote your times to something positive. I'm saying this as a helping hand rather than a snipe. By all means critique my posts, which are more varied. I'm off to bother Cat who is worryingly quiet at the moment.
  23. There's a wider discussion on why people get dogs but have to use dog walkers. I grew up with dogs and when we went on our hols they went into kennels. Never had a dog in London as not the space, nor the time to walk them. I still prefer them to other pets. And dare I say a conversation whether we should keep pets at all. (all first world problems)

Thinking of another thread, and back to reading our kids books when they were young. Spot goes to the beach. Dad can we got to the beach asks Spot. No, dad replies, because we are not allowed as we crap on the sand Sorry below the belt Anyway an American had bought himself and his wife lifetime tickets for the Superbowl final. Last year he is there but with a spare seat by him. Another spectator asks him why the seat is spare. He explains about himself and his wife, but that she recently died. Oh I am so sorry says the spectator. Did you not have a friend or family member who could go? Oh they are busy says the gent. They are at my wife's funeral For the sake of balance that can be told with the genders reversed, same sex couples and the like.
  25. In deed, it is 14 years old and I have to use kind words to get it to work. But winded 7 still working well even without support. I've now ordered a new build.
