  1. Good on local authorities getting in money to spend on local amenities being funded by motorists ignoring restrictions. Sorry, but with all the bleating I had to post this.
  2. Ich bin ein Holzf?ller und es geht mir gut
  3. I suggest only resurfacing the outer parts of roads so that drivers can have a similar experience to cyclists, having to dodge potholes, drain covers, detritus and enjoy the generally poor surface. On a separate matter government funding should focus on electric vehicle infrastructure, not subsidies. Economies of scale will bring down costs of new EVs and there is a growing used EV market. Subsidies have been kept for political reasons and were far more relevant in the early days when there were so few EVs available and on the road to pump prime the market.
  4. Here's another group that you may wish to consider joining: https://www.livingstreets.org.uk/about-us/our-organisation And a relevant article from them: https://www.livingstreets.org.uk/policy-and-resources/our-policy/walkable-neighbourhoods. You might not agree, but give it a read.
  5. There's a bigger political issue here that this government can essentially do what they want, in particular policies that middle England would support. An extreme example would be bringing back the death penalty (I'm not suggesting that this will happen). Responsible governments would do what is best for the country and society, be modern and progressive, rather than remain rooted to the past.
  6. Not at all conflicted. Avoid unnecessary car journeys. Factor the environment into my decisions. And the benefits of active travel. And preach this from any available soap box. I feel too many of you seem to want to blame others, or come up with barriers, rather than do similar to me. FairTgirl I've posted a number of other organisations that I have time for who campaign on air quality, and on the environment. The game plan is to reduce the number of cars on the road, and sadly to do this you have to bring in some inconvenience and/or cost as a stick to get people out of their cars. Leaving more space on the roads for other forms of transport and those that really need to drive or be in a car/van/lorry/emergency vehicle etc. All these schemes take time to bed in and change behaviours. I haven't done any modelling of the LTNs in Southwark, Lewisham and elsewhere, this affects me too. Others can spend time analysing traffic flows and come up with different schemes. Actually if I was conflicted it was on air travel. But Covid has put a hold on that for the time being and this is a separate topic for a separate thread. Oh and on Amazon, but I find beating myself up is the best remedy when I am occasionally 'forced' to use them.
  7. Not really sure what this thread is about. If you want sympathy you've got it. If you want to let off some steam you have done. If you want advice we've given it. It would be helpful to you if you said some more about the theft so (a) we could watch out for these bikes (b) be more prepared so we don't get ours nicked (I've had four stolen, over a fairly long time, all under different circumstances)
  8. My points, Nigello's and others are valid Alice. What are you doing to reduce emissions? When did you become interested in air quality? I hope you have been playing your part but I worry that most aren't. The angry chap ranting on the Jeremy Vine programme sadly seems typical of many. The local listener that called in and said about the difficulties in driving to Tommies neglected to say that congestion towards Lambeth bridge has been dreadful for the last decade, this was my normal (cycle) commute, and this has nothing to do with LTNs, but the number of vehicles on the road. This is a social media site which is for debate as well as information. Please feel free to debate with me my points above and elsewhere. I welcome open debate. I recognise the ginormous changes in personal mobility and freedom that the car brought in the 50s and 60s. But we can no longer think like this if we really care about the environment and our fellow citizens. A great example. LTNs causing traffic jams. Yes a worry. Jams by schools. Yes a worry. Traffic idling in the jams. TURN YOUR BLOODY ENGINE OFF. I think that is the first time I've used capitals to emphasise a point.
  9. This all sounds like the East End or OKR in the 60s. What is a BB gun (OK I found out by Googling) but is this common knowledge?
  10. Apols for butting in and my general ignorance but it may be worth explaining what a doula is - a professional who provides support, but is not a healthcare professional. I'll ask an ex nurse friend who worked at St Christophers.
  11. But why the sudden interest now? - why not ten, twenty or thirty years ago when air pollution was much worse? Clean Air in London have been around for ten years or more - see their ten tips on air quality https://cleanair.london/solutions/10-steps-for-clean-air-in-london/ Client Earth have been taking on government over air quality for a similar length of time and have been successful in the courts in getting government to meet legal air quality limits. There is a bigger picture/world beyond SE22.

Two 570 mls of lager and a packet of crisps please. Although most of us would be happy if they rounded up the metric pint to 600mls (noting that litres are not a proper unit, we'd have to do it in fractions of a cubic metre so then it would get confusing....)
  13. No it's the popular front for the people of Dilwihs DKH, keep up will you. Although Greenwash can hardly be applied to Client Earth (ignoring the major funding by celebs), Clean Air in London and Extinction Rebellion. You should also try Clean Air London, it's got some lovely graphics (so that is a rainbow wash) https://www.london.gov.uk/sites/default/files/shorthand/clean_air/
  14. In deed, bring back hanging, or maybe hang drawn and quartering. And that includes the people who buy them on Gumtree. PS had too many bikes stolen, hate it, really personal. But don't feel the need to go knee jerk. Good luck, perhaps give a description, you never know they may be spotted. And check Gumtree, the thieves' first port of call.

Damn. Australia being more progressive than the UK. Damn. And adopting decimalisation earlier. Damn. You will be becoming a republic next. Well that I do approve of. I bet you have also adopted metric units. Not really sure what I am going on about, perhaps somebody could help.
  16. This lot have a more local interest Clean air Dulwich
  17. Here's a group that have been campaigning for many years, rather than one set up purely due to the LTN https://cleanair.london/ And another one https://www.clientearth.org/ And a further organisation who's interests go even wider https://extinctionrebellion.uk/
  18. Heineken should surely manage all road works

Eclectic link but had to turn it off when the kids were singing thurdy two. It's thirty damn you. It's got a t in it. Damn Americans damning down our language again. And typical for a toosday.
  20. My recollection was from the Panorama documentary, which showed that he was under surveillance from an unarmed team, but they were not communicating with the counter terrorism team. I didn't gleam this from the wiki entry, but if there were/as there were serious mistakes then someone should have taken the can for this. Compensation was paid to his family. The question is, as this was something that happened over 15 years ago does it have any relevance to the events of Saturday night? I expect not.
  21. On one hand I have had a lot of time for her, in particular breaking the usual mould. But the Charles De Menezes murder..... Well I suppose irrespective of public opinion investigations and inquiries were held into the unlawful killing. I've just quickly read the wiki article, and not clear whether it was cock up or conspiracy. In either case where should the buck have stopped, the current commissioner or those above her at the time?
  22. I don't give her any credence at all. I thought her interview yesterday was totally stage managed when she talked about her 'experience' which I do not believe. She was trying to be empathetic but it was just so so so so insincere. Playing either the race card or the gender card. Now see what you have done JohnL, I was all calm and relaxed and now you have got me started!
  23. It's a nice cycle ride for me - not just saying this because of the threads on LTNs and the like - with reasonably secure parking. So much nicer than the old East Dulwich hospital.
  24. Was anyone at Clapham Common? The reporting is quite confusing and the Met Police is being very firm that they handled it appropriately. The footage varies from women being dragged away to infiltration by opportunist anti lockdown thugs there for a fight. Personal view is that the MPS should have allowed this, with proper marshalling. Which would have allowed for lighter touch policing, and even support/sympathy from the boys and girls in blue. The High Court would not rule and Reclaim these Streets withdrew from holding an official vigil for fear of a hefty fine. I've seen the police as a whole become better integrated into society, rather than being from another planet as in my youth when they were totally out of touch, and were boot boys for a centre right government (miners, Clause/Section 28 and the like).
