  1. Thanks for the update Yes absolutely
  2. Workers are currently laying a new path. Cyclists and pedestrians are sharing the remaining half. No issues, and plastic barriers are used as a baffle to slow cyclists down, as well as the speed humps, for those coming down the hill. I've used it all week, and it's fine; looking forward to the new path being finished hopefully in a week or two's time.

    The fifth?

Vance is something else. That's not a compliment
  4. It was a marketing approach to get kids to do exactly the opposite. ie watch the programme. 'Why don't you' was very progressive at the time. It encouraged kids to partake in craft type activities. Creative, just like the skatepark https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Why_Don't_You%3F
  5. It asked me what street I lived in so I put it down. They can ignore my response if they want. But with this view surely only those living on the street should post on here.
  6. If I drove to work when I was in central London I'd have to pay. Why should other commuters/workers be treated specially? It took me a couple of minutes to fill in the consultation form on line and send it in, I didn't have that much to say.
  7. The title could be very damaging to a business. And as such defamatory.
  8. In 2010 we were hit with some extreme winter weather. I cycled through it as I did the last time this happened in 1991. Bit daft as the office closed due to shortage of facilities and security staff. All buses were cancelled as were most trains. People whinged saying Russia and Scandinavia managed extreme winter weather so much better. But a senior colleague said it would be clearly daft to spend 100s of millions on events that happened a few times each century. That's the way some of you are coming across, justifying large vehicles just in case Krakatoa irrupts. Perhaps I should invest in a skidoo and ice skates for when the Thames next freezes over.
  9. So you are justifying 4 WD just in case a freak snow storm happens. I've never experienced one of these in the UK. The impact on environment, roads, pedestrian safety, use of resources doesn't matter? If you are that worried about freak snow storms in the UK you are far better off with winter tyres, than four wheel drive. I've driven plenty of times in Austria and Italy in the mountains with 2WD and winter tyres. I've driven many times in the UK in snow with just 2WD, particularly when young living further North where we had regular snow. In my younger days it was quite exciting.
  10. How did you manage with two wheel drive all those years? Traction control, ABS yes. Four wheel drive - really?
  11. Odd confusing representative democracy with Putin invading Ukraine. Look at any democratic organisation and they will implement policies where they don't go out to members. Labour is broadly centre left, probably supporting the environment, active travel, workers' rights, the welfare state etc etc. Not sure what you are expecting? Tory boroughs/governments also do much if this, until Sunak, all Tory led governments this millennium were very supportive of active travel, Johnson introduced the ULEZ which he expected would be extended to the circulars, Tory boroughs have parking controls and road restrictions. Five years on I doubt if the LTNs are going away. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Representative_democracy
  12. Did you raise with the school? I'd do that first. My general experience was fine. Loved the creative stuff Edited. Just realised I was referring to Charter North.
  13. Spitfire outlived the Herald, think it made it into 80s. Same concept and manufacturer. They were outdated when the range was introduced in the late 50s and it was a cost saving measure. In the good old days wood was used, oh wait a minute, aren't Morgans still on a chassis?
  14. New models of cars have to meet minimum standards. It's called type approval and covers many things including emissions and safety systems. A non statutory change that also added weight is air con. So yes cars have got heavier, due to improved safety as well as more gizmos But SUV type models can be much heavier. A Golf may be around 1.3 tonnes, a range rover twice that. Not really sure what your argument is and why you are defending the move towards much heavier models.
  15. I'd take some stool samples, keep them in the fridge, book a GPs appointment, and ask for them to be analysed. Kids are sick from time to time. We all were. We all are occasionally. Unless there is a serious outbreak of a bug that can potentially hospitalise a lot of people, then public health will not get involved. For your own benefit you can always visit the cafe and check out their scores on the doors food safety rating and if they are not displaying one, question why. A few years ago there was a large e coli outbreak at the Glastonbury festival, cows graze the land and some festival goers were not being too hygienic. A reminder to us all to wash our hands etc. with COVID this should be second nature
  16. I do live locally. But not on Melbourne Road. My local shops are in SE22, pub and bus stops. I've been travelling through SE22 for decades. I know a fair amount about local transport, the national picture, and the need to take action against emissions of pollutants and climate change gases to meet national legal requirements and international commitments. With the rise in populist politicians and anti-science, against the backdrop of geopolitical tensions and poor national finances - Tories, COVID, Ukraine and a shaky start by the new government, as citizens there is even more we need to do. In the absence of personal responsibility and looking at issues from our own self interest, I understand why local authorities have to consider firmer actions. And I could do more too before I am criticised of being holier than thou
  17. SUVs are now commonly known as all vehicles high off the ground, be they Range Rovers to cash kis (can't be bothered with proper spelling). Completely disagree with your assertion that these cars are most suitable for families, having hired numerous cars of numerous sizes, vall apart from the new Beetle, due to no luggage space, we're fine. Hired a Golf recently and plenty of space for four adults. And round town a Corsa will get you and your family around. May not be so comfortable on a long drive but even then a Golf will be reasonable. You will be of the generation where you went on family hols with four kids in the back, luggage on a roof rack etc. Obviously cars are much safer and comfortable now but please don't start promoting SUV style cars unless you have one yourself.
  18. And? To live in this area you have to be reasonably well off unless you are in a position to be in social housing with labour costs for builders and other professionals in the 100s of pounds a day what is a few more quid? There are huge swathers of London with controlled parking, and the central London congestion charge. You still see loads of Pimlico Plumbing vans though.
  19. Sounds counter intuitive. Trouble is we are all experts in things where we do not have personal experience as an owner and/or user. Lots of criticism of lime bikes but rarely people come on and post their positive experience. Dog walkers and owners ditto. Police officers, enforcement officers, surely some of you must be on this forum. My expertise on SUVs having hired two briefly over the years with no desire to own one is that it is a life style choice, heavily marketed by manufacturers, and often impractical for narrow London streets with tight parking. But what would I know? Surely an SUV driver can correct me!
  20. Pollution is mainly due to road vehicles. If drivers made smarter choices there would be less pollution.
  21. Melbourne Road was a rat run. I've used it in the past. It would not have taken that many vehicles, which would all have to have returned to the main road. I'm pleased that many rat runs have been closed. Many were closed or restrictions were bought on long before LTNs. London roads have always suffered from congestion. Certainly in the last 50 years or so.
  22. On line consultation you need to put down your street. Yes, you can lie. But fairly straight forward to find out if you do live there or not through council tax, electoral register and no doubt loads of other ways. Manifesto is here: https://www.southwarklabour.com/manifesto2022/ The section on clean air and healthy streets includes a commitment to charge more polluting cars and larger cars more for parking, And incentives for moving away from cars. The 2023 Air Quality Plan goes into far more detail, including the increase in CPZs . Whatever your views worth a read and I find it difficult to knock the overall direction of this: https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q=air+quality+plan+southwark Generally there seems to be a dichotomy. Generally a centre left electorate but then turn angry when measures affect them. There are sadly bigger things going on today over the pond. CPZs seem trivial in comparison.
  23. I was asked what the benefits of CPZs are and gave quite a few. Several of you are quite concerned about CPZs but none of you have offered any views on what I had to say. Disappointing as this is a discussion forum rather than a call to arms.
  24. Went to the Harvester a couple of times to have a beer in the garden, it was quite popular and had a 'certain' charm.
  25. Sounds like a cool place to hang out, even it I am over the minimum drinking age. Always looks cool when I cycle past, never seen any bother and love some of the community stuff they do too.
