  1. Government failed to grasp the nettle, allowing illegal bikes on the road, grey imports etc. So their response is to simply roll over and allow more powerful assisted bikes and twist and go full electric. https://cyclingindustry.news/cycling-industry-alarm-at-government-ebike-regs-consultation/ Do respond to the consultation, I have www.gov.uk/government/consultations/smarter-regulation-proposed-changes-to-legislation-for-electrically-assisted-pedal-cycles I'd love to hear informed comments including those who think this is a good thing. Cheers
  2. I saw a documentary once where a student had had his room vandalised, to shock of a girlfriend. But it turned out that it wasn't, the room always looked like that. Or maybe it was a Yellow Pages advert.
  3. In deed, got a bit ahead of myself. Was in Alleyns Head on Saturday but really doesn't do it for me
  4. If you think this is definitely a food poisoning issue contant the Southwark food team. I'll post a link later if you can't find it
  5. Nope, Thames Water say this is your responsibility BUT do replace them I think because they have a statutory duty to reduce water leakage. I expect local authorities are involved due to lead in water and past fears of lead poisoning/impact on children's intelligence. But happy to learn otherwise
  6. Also worth visits to the transport museum in Covent garden and perhaps even more wonderful Actin depot. Funny that there is all this nostalgia for the routemaster to yet it was out of date when it was introduced. Yes I know that the RT series predates this
  7. No, but really worth checking out when you visit. Sorry can't find a link. Community centres sound good too.
  8. But not the new electric ones
  9. I thought I'd started a topic on my favourite buses but can't find it. Admin no issues with merging this id that thread exists. Anyway, exciting news, I saw an electric 363 today. Hopefully they will electrify all the 363s as per most of the 185s and 63s. A raspberry for those new routemasters such as the 12s and 176s. An expensive indulgence projects from the last Mayor. The new electric double deckers are more comfortable, smoother, have good on board information , charging points and even holders for your phone.
  10. Not a fan of most of the Lordship Road pubs. The Plough may work, and Alleyns Head in East Dulwich, but I think both lack charm. The Old Nunshead in Nunhead in the past would have been perfect and may be worth checking out. The perfect pub which will be brilliant for rugby is the Blythe Hill Tavern in Forest Hill. Check the pizza van is there and arrived early. The Castle will be good, again it is pizza (order from Backyard)
  11. Not a scam, not sure how a water company would get away with such a scam. For balance their performance is awful as we all know, and they do pressurise you into taking out cover for leaks, no different to other non-essential insurance such as boiler cover from British Gas or extended warranties. British Gas were guilty 30 years ago of encouraging people to take out cover, then sending their engineer to come round and condemn your boiler whether it was serviceable or not. Yes it happened to me. But to their credit when we had a leak they were good at taking action, didn't charge us for excessive water use, replaced most of our lead mains pipe in the garden with plastic, but couldn't replace the final bit that came into the home where the leak was as that was not Thames' responsibility. He closed up the hole as much as he'd dare without making it worse, gave me some basic advice about how best to sort this, and pointed me in the direction of a geezer from North Kent, and armed with good knowledge I got it done at a very reasonable price. Helps to know some details which makes you much less vulnerable to over-charging. We've discussed water meters before on this forum and the general consensus is they are needed to manage what can be a scarce resource. Take a meter reading, turn your water off into the house, and then take another meter reading half an hour later. Any change means either a leak outside the home, or a dodgy meter. Repeat with the supply on, making sure no water running including flushing toilets. A change in your meter reading would suggest a leak in the house. Neither would be discovered without a meter. And I think all this advice is on their website.
  12. Pleased with Southwark's work on restoring the West Lodge at Nunhead Cemetery. Not so pleased that I couldn't find a link to this - go down and check it out yourself
  13. Hmm, how easy would this be to enforce. As a society we now acknowledge that it is not appropriate to smoke in public areas, and booze can be considered similarly. Saying that we cannot eat sounds rather draconian. I think that it is again down to society, at the moment we are encouraged by our fast food industry to buy takeaway food which due to high salt content and other flavourings, texture and the your peer group and be addictive. Chicken shops are often found near schools. Government plays lip service. It would be wonderful if demand plummeted. Can't see that happens. Smell, noise etc is subjective. Popcorn in cinemas? I'm much more annoyed by people listening to videos whilst on the bus/train etc, or having phone conversations using the speaker on their phone. Why oh why am I interested in your conversation and the tiny voice at the other end? And thanks to the person who left the flaky pastry on the tube on Saturday I sat on.
  14. Good heavens Jazzer, you sound just like my father "you might know what X and y equals but you have no common sense" <removed>
  15. Oh it's all relative Nigello, I expect that you have done irritating things in your life, I certainly have. It's annoying, but generally doesn't cause harm. Good citizenship is the key, how you achieve this I don't know. Generally we as a nation are polite and helpful. In some situations people, who on the face of it may look the least likely to help, will rush in. And on cyclists, ultimately one less car on the road, no matter how annoying they are.
  16. I had a humorous thread about yummy mummies and daddies that I may try and find. But this is gentrified SE London and part and parcel of living in the area. Perhaps some of you who may identify as yummy mummies or daddies may with to comment! Maybe this thread is best moved to the family section Here's an alternative take on parenting: www.amazon.co.uk/Scummy-Mummies-Helen-Thorn/dp/1849499616
  17. I'd let feral pigeons and green squawky things be devoured by the first predator but otherwise very much in agreement.
  18. To be fair all big retailers are profiling you as they have for twenty years or more. I get emails from companies I have got quotes from but do not remember tucking a box permitting this. But Amazon take things further than many.
  19. If you have an issue with Amazon, and many of us have due to ethics, taxation, workers rights, then please do stop using them. They are a supplier of last resort for me.
  20. Planes make no noticeable difference to our local air quality. Main issue is at airports through runway operations and surface access ie motor vehicles driving to the airport. You could argue that there should be restrictions on air traffic due to climate change, that carbon emissions should be included in national and international targets and agreements, and that passengers should be charged for the environmental damage. But governments are too chicken to do that, and most of us can't kick the habit of flying, yes even me 😒
  21. Complain to the council. No sympathy for, as you put it, the "rats" that are trapped.
  22. Interesting article about entitled drivers: https://usa.streetsblog.org/2022/05/17/there-are-just-four-types-of-drivers-and-ending-car-dependency-means-reaching-them-all It's from America so there will be some differences but worth a read. The blog classes 25% of Portland drivers as entitled (this is the large SUV who gives a frigg), 30 % as habitual, 5% as reluctant (we would rather not drive but we have to due to X or y - perceived or true), and the rest as non-drivers I'd add the first two together, and the article considers that you need the same approach to both of those groups in order to get change. I expect that there is a larger number in the reluctant group in this area, who need a bigger nudge, or greater inconvenience (to answer your point on evidence Rocks, this group is more likely to give up their car due to a CPZ). There should also be an anomalous group - they have no reason to stick up for car drivers, but detesting the local authority. I expect there are people like this in all the Labour boroughs. OK let's have some informed debate, paraphrasing the late Caroline Aherne/Mrs Merton. https://usa.streetsblog.org/2022/05/17/there-are-just-four-types-of-drivers-and-ending-car-dependency-means-reaching-them-all Head mun, by all means drive, but does it really bother you a little additional cost or inconvenience. I'd disagree as getting out of London, to most places I want to go, is quicker by train. Kent, quicker by train, Birmingham, quicker by train, Northumbria (where I holidayed last year, much quicker and less stressful by train). Of course there will be places where there are not convenient due to lack of lines, or stations.
  23. Two years and you still say the same things. Southwark is incompetent corrupt, money grabbing etc. you have no practical alternatives to reducing road traffic and emissions. My consultation would be do you want to reduce emissions (a) yes (b) no. If (a) put up with our measures if (b) tough. Saying that CPZs do not reduce emissions is ludicrous. It will reduce car ownership. Some may decide to walk, get the bus, cycle, get a lift, shop on line, use a zip car that may well be electric, or an UBER which in time will become increasingly electric. Some may upgrade their car to a cleaner model due to cheaper CPZ cost. Ditto with visitors, make it a bit more costly/inconvenient some will switch It's simply that many of you just don't believe it should cost you
  24. Amusing/sad, we want cleaner air, we want to take action against climate change. But are we prepared to pay for any of this? NOOOOO
  25. Noise is subjective and depends on how your body deals with this. Sometimes the planes on their way to Heathrow wake me up at 5.30, other times I sleep through these, wind direction and runway/approach make a difference. I expect LL is worse during the morning school run. There are options to reduce noise at home if you have traditional single glazed windows.
