  1. also guys, it it possible that i will quote anything you say as part of my case study of the 'locals', must obviously let you know due to ethical reasons!! ... if anybody objects please let me know!!! Thankyou
  2. excellent guys... really helping me out great to get an insight into what everybody can tell me through experience... am doing this comparison, as Barnsbury in Islington is the only known case of Super-Gentrification in Britain and Im doing a case study on East Dulwich, to explore the effects of gentrification... so everything helps.. for example: why you moved? what are the similarities? what are the crucial differences? (aware that i have some great feedback already) anything you would like to add in general!
  3. 'im aiming for someone who has lived in both!!!' was not aimed at u alan dale!
  4. Alan Dale, would you say in maybe a couple of years ED will almost be there - on the scale of upper street?
  5. im aiming for someone who has lived in both!!!
  6. has anyone once lived in Islington, and now lives in Dulwich? Would love to compare and contrast these two areas with you!! For a case study I am carrying out! thankyou
  7. Together with my tutor we have redfined a provisional title for my dissertation... "Gentrification- the leading cause of emotional distress as Oliver James suggests? OR merely and extended form of regeneration? Using East Duwlich (Lordship Lane) as a case study, I will examine the pro's and con's of gentrification and the effects it has on society." Has there been side effects to the newly gentrified ED? if you havent already would you care to suggest your views on the pro's and con's of this gentrification?
  8. most probably just because it isnt the 'norm' and they are 'new', whereas the other chains have been around for a while, almost as though they have our consent! generally i think the gentrification is a good thing.. but i have to llok at pros and cons to get a balanced argument!
  9. i do understand, just wasnt the main point of what we were talking about ... so in effect, doesnt matter so much to our conversation!
  10. still new york though barry!!! i got the jist... how have you found the white stuff?? good addition?
  11. thankyou barry masrhall! this is exactly the kind of feedback im looking for! yes i have come across the Manhattan case, and have read a very interesting book called Loft Living by Sharon Zukin... i totally agree that ED isnt so bad.. at the moment... but that neither was Islington when gentrification first started in Barnsbury... maybe gentrification is just a way of life? the rate of change can be so fast...
  12. yes... but this one 'fits' in... have you seen it? it almost opposite the plough i think they are trying to be 'not your average' curry house... although im not saying its needed!!
  13. Hey, i work at the Magdala... (yes that bright yellow one that nobody really ventures to!) However, we have 2 plasmas, and a pull down big screen, downstairs and have the second bar upstairs with a plasma too. whatever you think of the place, we were so busy last saturday that the bouncers had to turn people away, there was a fantastic atmosphere, and it is a particularly great place to watch any sport... the only tables you can reserve are the 3 booths, however they have been reserved for 3 weeks!! if you get there early you will have your pick of seats! hope that helps!
  14. great feedback... thankyou piers for the thread, and sorry for offending with my grammar error!!! accidental, but clearly unforgivable!! great advice/comments/support keep them coming and i will keep you posted with further developments
  15. wow... you are very quick at replying! im new to all this! Perhaps i should define what im trying to point out... im not out too pre judge its merely what my research so far has brought to light. often when speaking to people, i hear, "i bought this car, because it gets to 130mph", not because it gets me from a to b. when i asked a young mum why she decided to buy a three-wheeled mama and papa baby buggie, she replied: "its the norm in ED" I want to know why its the norm, and whether there is a 'keeping up with the joneses' affect. and as for 'Where will it end?' rather then geographically i meant what is the next step for east dulwich will gentrification continue, and is a continuation possible. i was away for a month in the summer and when i came back it already looked different!
  16. Hi, im a local student who now has reached my final year and its dissertation time!! I know this has been mentioned time and time again, on many different threads and could quite possibly be quite boring for you all. however, im focusing on Gentrification, and am carrying out a case study on East Dulwich!! im looking at how Gentrification can cause false aspirations, myth, status anxiety and emotional distress BUT also how it can improve an area greatly. I would like anyone and everyone to comment on these ideas, id like your ideas, and i know it will probably go over many things that you have already talked about, but it would be really great to be more focused on what i am talking about and all in one thread!! the main questions i pose to you are: Do you think gentrification in Dulwich has been a good thing or a bad thing? Has it gone too far? Where do u think it will end? Would be great to hear your thoughts
