  1. I love the crapping dog. What does that say about me! No replies needed to that please
  2. I feel honoured that you pulled this off for the place where I live. I won't ry to find words and I'll just say a resounding THANK YOU for changing the streets I use into living galleries
  3. http://www.crashmap.co.uk/Search play with this and please do post when you find anyone other than drivers causing mayhem year after year to themselves, to other drivers, to cyclists and to pedestrians your posts about cyclists as the be all and end all of street problems are paranoid obsessive and the wilful pretence that drivers are hard done defies all evidence for 100 years across the face of the earth no one should ever drive a car without first considering if they can walk or cycle or take public transit I also think cyclists need to stay off the pavement except where indicated by a blue sign like on the South Circular I think pedestrians need to be more considerate of other pedestrians But all of this pales when faced with the reality of what a car is. The "footprint" of a car? There is no problem like cars on planet earth: Environmental Impact Production and Destruction Cars consume a lot of energy before they ever make it to the open road. Automotive production leaves a giant footprint because materials like steel, rubber, glass, plastics, paints, and many more must be created before a new ride is ready to roll. Similarly, the end of a car?s life doesn?t mark the end of its environmental impact. Plastics, toxic battery acids, and other products may stay in the environment. Fortunately, junkyard pile-ups are becoming much smaller than they were in the past. About three-quarters of today?s average car, including the bulk of a steel frame, can be recycled. Production, recycling, and disposal costs to the environment are difficult to quantify and largely beyond the control of most consumers. They are also relatively minor. Most of an automobiles? environmental impact, perhaps 80 to 90 percent, will be due to fuel consumption and emissions of air pollution and greenhouse gases that climate scientists say are driving global warming. Fortunately, the level of that impact is very much under the control of the driver. Fuel Costs Petroleum products raise environmental red flags even before they are burned. Extracting them from the earth is an energy-intensive process that can damage local ecosystems. Shipping fuels can also consume a lot of energy, and creates an occasional environmental disaster such as an oil spill. As world demand rises, and unconventional fuel sources, such as oil sands, become more economically viable, the ecological impacts of petroleum extraction might also increase dramatically. That?s one more reason why fuel efficiency is so important. Air Quality Vehicles are the UK?s biggest air quality compromisers, producing about one-third of all U.K. air pollution. The smog, carbon monoxide, and other toxins emitted by vehicles are especially troubling because they leave tailpipes at street level, where humans breathe the polluted air directly into their lungs. That can make auto emissions an even more immediate health concern than toxins emitted high in the sky by industrial smokestacks.
  4. Plough height and I think there's water not far underground: Upland / Friern
  5. My house was built on a dill meadow. It's irrepressible wherever there are cracks
  6. Just to be perfectly clear what I'm talking about is CCTV entirely on private property and entirely directed on to your own entrance points. I don't think there is anything controversial about this. And then, if someone crowbars up my windows as they did within this last week, I have an image of them doing it. Better than prints of their gloved hands as a way to identify someone.
  7. Peckham Rye Snt DATES FOR OUR STREET BRIEFINGS Thursday 8th August 1100-1130 Peckham Rye Caf? Thursday 15th August 1900-1930 Harris Boys Academy Saturday 24th August 1100-1130 Harris Girls Academy Consider "befriending" Peckham Rye Safer Neighbourhoods Team on Facebook. They're trying to be more accessible/ modern. Tell them directly/electronically what your thoughts are. After some thought I think one way forward is CCTV shared by neighbours for cost and placement. Then shame perpetrators / post their images like after the riots. What do you all think? Just put up with endless break-ins?
  8. Contact the councillors for that Ward and then they'll contact the traffic planners and then... I feel a bit bad as the whole lot just convened to discuss the junction of Lordship Land and Upland Rd. The crossing you're talking about came up and heads were shaken in sorrow and acknowledgement. Eventually 2015? everything will be 20mph including that intersection. It all leaves open the question why people paid to do a job (traffic engineers, planners etc) cannot see the nose on their face. I can easily remember this intersection being rebuilt and the astonishment to realise that pedestrians had not been accommodated to keep it simple for drivers.
  9. I'm at the south end of Upland Rd very near Lordship Lane if anyone needs water they can have what they like: PM!
  10. I hold my hand up: The heat has temporarily fried my brain excuse my ott post
  11. http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17288621-ten-billion Ten Billion by Stephen Emmott We have no ability at all to think long term. Read this book and weep for space and quiet peace that we are losing irrevocably as we twiddle our thumbs (at best at worst we follow leaders screaming about the unborn's right). We have no self control as a species. And it starts first with control of human population in whose name we pour concrete over every unguarded space.
  12. They say that a picture is worth a thousand words, so here are some photos taken on July 7 & 8, 2013, of the Community Orchard which Southwark plans to sweep away. Southwark proceeded through a biased consultation which asked people what kind of library they wanted, but not where it should be sited. The Orchard's destruction was taken for granted. Quote Friend's of Brockwell Park Come and see for yourself: Thursday at 3pm for a photo shoot with Rosie Boycott, Boris Johnson's Food Ambassador, and Jenny Jones, Green Party AM, who will visit the orchard to support local residents' struggle to save it from destruction
  13. Isn't the classic action: Long pole with something very sticky on the end Gum?
  14. All your missing cats are in my back garden where they sleep on my chairs and in my flower beds which they also use as a litter tray. I don't have cats. Your cats stalk and kill my frogs and other wild life. Your cats are with me all day and all night. I guess I can say you don't have to worry about them but I do wonder why you have cats that live exclusively with me. If my children lived exclusively with you? Ate in your house, used your facilities to wash and eat and perform other hygienic activities? So don't worry about your cats, for whatever reason you decided you needed cats but then didn't keep them and clean them and feed them on your property, your cats live 24/7 in my back garden.
  15. http://www.southwarknews.co.uk/00,news,13014,5443,00.htm http://londonist.com/2012/03/reprieve-for-camberwell-orchard-as-council-backs-down-over-library.php http://www.peoplesrepublicofsouthwark.co.uk/hold-news/news/2211-camberwell-green-orchard-june2012-update http://www.southwarknews.co.uk/00,news,24968,5224,00.htm This has been fought over with reprieve granted and then withdrawn. The council has portrayed it as "some trees" or a library. What's needed is this amazing space and a library. Surely this is not beyond the wit of ... council politicians, planners and architects
  16. http://www.miguelsboxinggym.com fantastic place
  17. What about saving the orchard of fruit trees at Camberwell Green? This is so unique that if any reader went there and understood that the council intends to bulldoze this unique wildlife habitat in the middle of an urban bleak cement landscape... why? to spite "the nose on their face"? ("he cut off his nose to spite his face")
  18. Please do leave them. These are pollinators and they're only this side of "protected".
  19. call 07922147379 or 07864933266 These are London Beekeeper swarm collection numbers. Website: www.lbka.org.uk
  20. This is beautiful. Thank you for posting. My garden is only dill. Everything else has to fight for space.
  21. The street art is gorgeous. Drivers stop driving, cyclists stop cycling, children stop crying adults stop and laugh together people from the full spectrum of colours and types chat and swap stories. Well done Ingrid and all the wonderful artists
  22. I completely agree and let's get rid of leaf blowers and those absurd machines that run at rush hour peak times cleaning gutters. Yes I am serious in case anyone mistakes this for something else
  23. wow and yeah lady D I've had all the same maybe not quite so dramatically
  24. I know you did DJ. I almost wish I'd gone with you. This conversation is really about congested urban areas. We're not talking about the trips that really truly are car trips. I make them too. By car!
