Could someone explain why our elected leadership does not stand and speak on our behalf? Where does Tessa Jowell stand on this? Where does Southwark Council as a whole stand on transit connections serving this part of Southwark This is a fundamental part of Southwark infrastructure and should be addressed in a unified way. Why wasn't the tube extended to East Dulwich? This is not a matter for one councillor and a bunch of volunteers and some signatures or conversation at the next meeting. This problem is of long standing. Mrs Jowell has been an MP for the area for 20 years? What could be more critical to the health and welfare of the area served than transit links?

Policy 5.6 Car parking 432 All developments requiring car parking should minimise the number of spaces provided. Maximum standards are set out in Appendix 15. 433 Where more than 20 surface parking spaces are proposed, applicants must demonstrate why this cannot be provided underground or within the building. 434 All developments will be expected to include justification for the amount of car parking sought, taking into account: i. Public Transport Accessibility Levels set out in Appendix 15; and ii. The impact on overspill parking; and iii. The demand for parking within the Controlled Parking Zones. The LPA will restrict permit provision where necessary. 435 Parking for retail and leisure uses within town centres should be shared with public parking, not reserved for customers of a particular development. Maximum stay restrictions are required for all retail and leisure town centre parking. Reasons 436 Too many cars cause problems with congestion and pollution, increasing travel times and expense as well as causing health problems. With fewer car parking spaces available people will seek alternative modes of transport to the private car, subsequently reducing congestion and pollution. 437 Access to services, leisure, shops and a range of amenities by public transport and other alternative modes of transport to the private car must be considered when providing less car parking in order to ensure efficiency and social inclusion. Measures to control overspill parking are necessary in order to prevent or mitigate loss of amenity including inconvenience to local residents caused by overspill car parking and increased pressure on on-street spaces. 438 Appendix 16 contains a schedule of existing Controlled Parking Zones. 439 PPS3, PPG 4, PPG 5 and PPG 13 recommend the restriction of private car use to either housing or employment sites and improved accessibility through the encouragement of modes of transport other than the private car.

And some wonderful planner/ horticulturalist for Southwark some years back planted the streets of East Dulwich full of crab apples. We've all been walking under a harvest of fruit for years and crushing it to pulp under our feet and some day the new lot of decision makers will rip them all out because they are "dirty". These rainbow crabapples make jam that comes in colours that you've rarely seen and tastes superb. There's so much pectin that it sets solid. Look up in a month and all that bright red and yellow and orange is edible.

What if you act fast to reach a "compromise": Stay for 1/2 an hour to "settle' your daughter ask if there is some helping job you can have so that your daughter thinks you "work there" and then she feels special then go out for an hour Put your head through the door quietly mid-way so that your daughter knows you're back then off for an hour and then pick-up On the one hand a teacher just wants to teach and isn't prepared for and doesn't have the energy for alot of behaviour management. On the other hand you want your child to integrate and learn to act in an acceptable manner thoughout her school time Bribe her with treats for good behaviour: books she can choose from the library, something special from a local bakery, the LIDO for a swim Put something in her pocket she can squeeze to calm down QUIETLY The long term is that your daughter has to learn to find private tricks to control herself with your help I hope it works and your daughter stays in the class

former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?

the-e-dealer Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > And so yet another event stolen from us with the > help of Ali Barber! > Pretty soon all entertainment will be canceled in > East Dulwich! I find this rude and, more dangerous, so ignorant of who is taking what important decisions in Southwark that will affect you and even London for your lifetime and beyond. If you want to chew on a council decision (better the person who made it) and an issue then do a search as to who controls what in Southwark. I'm sure you'll boil at the opportunities for anger over real hard money and building and decisions. Whether a cinema is too loud too late and too close to residences. really. And I love "Drive-Ins" with food and drink and lounging about under the night sky. Let's find a good place and go for it. -
Non emptying of recycling bins
mynamehere replied to Chase Dulwit's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Why not dump your small bin's contents into someone else's bin on collection day after they have left their bin resdy for collection. I know my neighbours wouldn't mind... why would anyone? Up goes the top, in goes your few bits or green bag down goes the top and you take your small bin back inside. Time start to finish a few seconds unless you find someone to chat with. -

why bother to restore Peckham town centre's historic buildings?
mynamehere replied to Eileen's topic in The Lounge
Security: 24 hour manned security gate FRIENDLY and BEAUTIFUL Will it work: Being a first, nothing is guaranteed. But, why not take a punt? Over 5 years or so some of the shop keepers will be moved because of regeneration in parts of the high street. Would they take "shops" around the periphery of the first 3 floors of the garage? Periphery means light and views and artfully agreeed advertising. They'll get the same or lower rents, visibility from a distance. first 3 floors shops: http://www.findaproperty.com/searchresults.aspx?edid=04&salerent=1&areaid=0379 click on that! ?700 to ?100,000 pcm do the maths! what a money spinner with a little creativity second 2 floors leased parking:http://apartments.oodle.co.uk/peckham-lnd-en/garages-for-rent/ click on that! upwards from ?120 pcm for a parking space in Peckham just a little more multiplication and then a restaurant at the top with a sales gallery: http://www.acorncommercial.co.uk/commercial-property/restaurants/restaurants-to-let-or-rent-in-peckham/ now click on this Here's my multiplication effort: Almost ?1,000,000 a year? 6 shops on a floor? 6 x ?2000 x 12 x 3 = ?432,000 per year shops 150 cars on a floor? 150 x 120 x 12 x 2 = ?432,000 per year parking restaurant? this is hard = $100,000 ? _________ ?964,000 per year? And all money in the pockets of a clever modern council who wants to put itself on the map of new and different and problem solving -

This is ED Forum and not Peckham as noted for other named locals but Peckham Parking Garage As with so many many other things/ places all the council wants to do is tear it down and build houses. So wrong for so many reasons and will it even "raise money" after the first council hands are shaken. Why not (close your eyes and enter a world where you are not beholden to your pre-conceived notions A-Z) why not sell or lease or rent the Peckham parking garage as... parking spaces or retail spaces and an all season restaurant / gallery at the top Well you might say, it already is parking spaces and no one uses it... but the packaging and pricing are wrong. What do we want as a package? Because what we have now is a bunch of politicians running about putting out little fires and pursuing atomized objectives. we want cars tidied off the streets we want better access to good transit hubs the council wants to raise money no one likes CPZs (etc) I haven't fleshed this out and already other parts of my life beckon but what if to own a car you had to buy a parking space? Houses with parking have the parking factored into the price. So, as well as building houses or flats, and for pre-existing residentials units, there has to be low-rise multi-storey parking with spaces for the cars owners are will to buy parking for. All cars off the streets Streets planted with hedgerows and flowers and crops (yes low level farmed) Part of the cost of owning a car is off street parking Mostly we will all have to walk a street or so to the parking Mobility limited catered for Don't just say NO. your dreams of a wonderful Status Quo or looking backward into mirrors seeing a rosey past that never existed quite as you image it did are , partially at least, not real. -
1. Going after a councillor who makes a bigger effort than most to balance it and get it right isn't savy. I'd say most of us spend most of our time sharpening our teeth on the wrong people. 2. If you want to know what people think you do a statistical survey and analyse it. Either the survey is done correctly or not. Consultations are exactly what fire all of you up: they are inherently biased and can be manipulated to serve pre-existing (council or otherwise) positions

What Sue says is exactly correct: just asking for views ie the obsession with "consultations" only gets extreme views and people on a mission. As a believer in statistics I cannot understand why the simple SURVEY correctly written and administered and analysed is not the first method of finding out what communities think of plans for change

why bother to restore Peckham town centre's historic buildings?
mynamehere replied to Eileen's topic in The Lounge
Personnally I loved the combination of perfect and lovingly restored old and spanking new. I see the spaces totally differently than here discussed Here's an idea for the multi storey parking garage... me of the vertical farm idea... problem with all the frontage stall holders and rents rising as Peckham's spruced up: Turn the parking into 6 floors of stall holders for.... LESS!!! than they pay rent now? the same? What about the artists that fear for their studios and rising costs? (over heard someone talking to Eileen) Put them into the parking garage as well... plenty of space and add some fruit trees at the top and chickens and a couple of sheep for me I am not kidding btw -

I have heard very impressive things about you in conversations with Barbara S. I would recommend to those in charge of regeneration on Southwark Council that they use groups like yours and Living Streets and London Cycle Campaign (there are many others but these as examples) as equal partners when they plan the future of urban areas. I'll help with pleasure. -
The attached image is of a 2000 year old Roman brick wall. If only the work done for me and all the people who have lived in my Victorian brick house approached the standard of ancient Rome.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuel_efficiency_in_transportation http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Who_Killed_the_Electric_Car%3F http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Motors_streetcar_conspiracy The more people use public transit the cheaper and better it is, the more room there will be on the streets for driving and parking, the easier "essential" car journies will be It is historic fact that the interests of petrol and petrol driven cars have repeatedly derailed other transit some ideologies aren't happy with "win / win" they want "zero / sum" where only they end up on top

East Dulwich train station to London Bridge Jubilee Line to Canning Town DLR to Excel 30 minutes

They didn't take ?500, they just took the amount for the tickets you were awarded. Go online and check. Just scroll back until you hit the Olympic debit. All your records are on line. But they didn't take more than the actual tickets I'm sure (I had the same chain of thoughts)
