Bulldozers and trucks and cement seem to be the people's will and the lowest common denominator. I do not get why we are never asked to change the way we do thinks, asked to evolve to greener, less wasteful http://sunrisingburialground.co.uk/memorials/trees.html http://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/0/19272231 http://bigthink.com/design-for-good/ Why not trees as memorials with benches under them? Orchards which make jams and are harvested and people are remembered forever with living produce: Auntie's favourite blackberry jam I just don't get this complete lack of imagination.
  2. There is no single thing that has destroyed lives and the high street more than betting shops. I do not think the Islington High Street is riddled with them. How could any right minded adult have open pandora's box of evil except to think the poor need their pursuits. No different at all than Payday Loan companies helping the underclass through xmas. I have a great respect for ... almost all your posts DJ but in this instance what are you on about? Of course, it must be, that any discussion about the hight street can be connected to all discussions about the high street. Really there is a 1984 tendency to "thought police" on this forum with clear right to rule political overtones. Please do not think I am taking "sides" on "Lordship Lane Co-op", I am not.
  3. And saving 10's of millions in pavement cleaning costs. Is there any other country where citizens and shops don't clean the pavement in front of them? Capital Spring Clean Week: 9-17 March 2013 Spring is coming and Capital Clean-up is calling for active citizens to get involved and hold a community clean-up in their area during these dates to give Southwark a spring clean. It can be anything you like, from a community litter pick to painting and planting. Please email me directly if you have any ideas of areas to target, Capital Clean-up is a partnership campaign led by the Mayor of London as part of his Team London volunteering programme to help Londoners green and clean our city through community engagement and participation. The campaign is now in its fifth year, For more information visit http://www.london.gov.uk/capitalclean-up Kind Regards Jo Skelton Team Leader Community Wardens Environment and Leisure Southwark Council 132 Queens Road London SE5 www.southwark.gov.uk 07939535604 jo.skelton@southwark.gov.uk
  4. The ability to run an organization for profit and ethically and efficiently is not widely held in the public or private sectors. Fusion Southwark certainly does not have this ability. Having spoken to a wide range of staff and users and reading comments posted here, I am dismayed by what I can only ascribe to incompetence at the oversight and managerial levels. The latest in managerial incompetence, firing highly qualified long standing staff as a ?union breaking? maneuver, doesn?t make managers out of youngsters without people skills, curiosity or sector depth of knowledge. It is unacceptable to make long standing skilled female staff ?redundant? and then hire in unskilled replacements and think this gives you swagger. Harriet Harman has become involved in this new chapter of Fusion?s inability to run a business at the East Dulwich Leisure Centre and Councillor Veronica Ward is involved in Southwark?s Environment and Leisure. If you don?t want to see staff hurt when incompetent managers continue or get reassigned please contact: harmanh@parliament.uk and veronica.ward@southwark.gov.uk
  5. I can understand that and I hope the lines of enquiry are being actively pursued.
  6. Hi James, there's a Safer Neighbourhood Team meeting at the cafe in Peckham Rye Park today from 16:00 to 16:30. I'm going to ask if there's a link between recent burglaries and what I've recently heard alleged is a group of about 5 houses to the west of Lordship Lane used for buying and selling property, possibly stolen, very occasionally prostitution and allegedly drugs. It is my understanding that these 5 houses have been discussed in police circles but no firm procedure has ever been put in place to nail down what if anything is going on.
  7. Please please does anyone know a good / honest garage for a Vauxhall Astra type of car in Weybridge Many Thanks for reading this and considering and responding (my friend is in tears on the subject!) Or a dentist in Weybridge as well!
  8. find it in finder and the you'll have the option of ejecting it
  9. Yes everyone have a great holiday season and here's an East Dulwich Christmas card I got that I'll share:
  10. I consider some of the postings against cyclists to be "hate" and crimes in spirit if not law why this amazing hate of the strong (plated armour, fossil fuel driven) against an exposed human a bit of metal with wheels? The law should be: 1. if a car touches a cyclist or a pedestrian it's the driver's fault 2. if a cyclist touches a pedestrian it's the cyclist's fault and that is what the law is in some countries 40 seconds (or less) from point A to point B for a car driver obsessed with their rights and the need to go fast and a driver who drives with consideration at speed limit. Internet Hate Crime: yes it only, correctly, deals with race and sex, the rest we're supposed to be able to do for ourselves in a free democracy Offensive Material and the Law The Internet has changed the way we communicate, it has many positive values but it has also allowed the hateful to spread offence to a broader audience, without editorial control and often behind a veil of anonymity. While you may come across a lot of material on the internet that offends you, very little of it is actually illegal. UK laws are written to make sure that people can speak and write, even offensive material, without being prosecuted for their views. Parliament has tried to define laws in a way that balances our freedom of expression with the right to be free from hate crime. Agencies like the police have duties to promote good relationships between different parts of our communities, but they do not have powers to control offensive thoughts or words unless they are shared illegally. We understand that hate material can damage community cohesion and create fear, so the police want to work alongside communities and the Internet industry to reduce the harm caused by hate on the Internet. Inciting hatred chat forums where people ask other people to commit hate crimes
  11. How/ why are you able to offer assistance? I still have the ticket and correspondence. I wrote about it on this forum. The parking attendant ignored school violations that put children in danger, waited for the parent chaos to clear and then ticketed me as i stood by my car doing something which required a great deal of effort. It was entirely malicious.
  12. I completely agree. Exactly the same thing happened to me. It must be a quota system, which is illegal. I've asked for data from "freedom of information" still waiting. I was stupid and paid because I thought it would "go away". Every point on which they charged me was "grey area" or false. They want CPZ's every where to set up money drip feeds into empty council coffers. Instead of root and branch reforms to lots of things with blue sky thinking they (probably) just have a quota system of low level harassment of soft targets that they back up with strong arm bullies behind desks.

  14. For months Living Streets has been working with jointly Southwark Cyclists and Southwark Council on the creation of a Green Route between the Bricklayers Arms and Burgess Park in East Walworth. The plans are now being consulted on by Southwark Council. If you could just take (max - we promise) 2 minutes to (hopefully) support this we would be very grateful. Just click on: https://forms.southwark.gov.uk/ShowForm.asp?fm_fid=844
  15. Trees for Bees!!! This died in the lounge and the money's going fast... the money can be used for street trees The Big Tree Plant, a campaign to encourage people and communities to plant more trees in England's towns, cities and neighbourhoods has announced that its funding programme is open for applications. ?4 million is available (to March 2015) to support community groups to plant trees in towns, cities and residential areas throughout England. Grants of between ?500 and ?25,000 are available to establish community-led tree planting projects in areas that would benefit most. The trees must be planted in streets or in green places that are open to all to visit or where local people will benefit from them. Groups working in areas where more trees would help to improve residents? quality of life are strongly encouraged to apply for the funding. The scheme can fund work such as community involvement, site surveys and expert advice as well as trees, planting materials, labour, and tree care and maintenance. The deadline for submitting applications is 5pm on the 15th March 2013. http://www.forestry.gov.uk/england-bigtreeplant
  16. Here's something somewhat related on a proposed green link and cycle path improvement https://forms.southwark.gov.uk/ShowForm.asp?fm_fid=844 the forestry money for trees is going fast http://www.forestry.gov.uk/england-bigtreeplant Sorry I rambled LondonLogCo: no, I don't have a particular site in mind
  17. Luckily one of the London Bee Keepers has excellent contacts so I'll leave high level efforts in his excellent informed hands... me I'd like to see all the regeneration money being spent more linked up: every spade of earth turned buries geo thermal and plants nectar rich, every roof has solar and wind; cemeteries are places of quiet reflection and green lungs. Trees should be planted to honour the dead with names and stories on plaques and benches to sit and wild flowers planted in perpetuity. No one is asking us to change the way we think because they are afraid of the kind of vitriol that is posted here.

  19. the-e-dealer Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > No. > > And Dulwich Van Hire do the same since they sold > their premises. Maybe a CPZ would help. Maybe work vans have to display a special parking permit disc I discussed this with a man working for me and he thought it is a great idea. I said ?300 and the man jumped at the idea that by paying ?300 and displaying a disc he could park at jobs in Southwark in CPZ zones I had no idea what these T Brown vans were. Interesting how Southwark plays a parking game. Today I saw these vans "waking up" and as they blocked traffic in all directions yielding to no one they drove with one hand as they all made phone calls What about these vans using and paying for Sainsbury parking overnight?
  20. I have a question about all the T Brown vans on Melbourne Grove: Do they pay to use the entire street for parking? More generally, people who bring their work owned vans "home" to be parked residentially, do the companies have to pay for this privilege/ inconvenience to the communities that host them for the night?
  21. We have Jupiter underfloor water and it took a few years (!) to settle... have you checked your control box? Are all the water bubbles in the middle? If I remember there are little control valves... but just get the people back asap. When it does start to work without problems it is blissful: warm floors nothing on the walls

    US Election

If Obama wins by two votes they came from my house. But I know the margin will be substantial in the Electoral College where the decision rests. And the Senate to the Democrats and the House of Representatives...
  24. Ask if Southwark will install bike lock loops on the street. These were being installed on request at one point. They should be up and down every street and many more on the high streets. Ask James
  25. have I missed something here? is southwark owned by a particular group or party? do parts of southwark vote exclusively? is my voting checked by someone and when I don't vote as my neighbours vote will I be strong armed by the majority? To paraphrase someone above did no one in college vote LD and might no one who voted other might they not in the privacy of the voting booth try another party in the future for infinitely many reasons? do not, do not assume party affiliation for me. I have voted each and every of the not extreme right wing nasties and I have lived in completely normal countries with rigged party votes and corrupt party systems and disenfranchised voters and I live in southwark and I have been attacked physically ( !!!! ) by party affiliated fat white male bouncers because they decided I dissed one of theirs It is beyond me the political tone and name calling taken by people on this forum who think they own political truth from pugwash above: If I recall correctly there have been several community council meetings which have asked about the proposed use of Dulwich Hospital. Also NHS Southwark/PCT have also had public meetings re health care in Southwark and people have put in various proposals re school/police/care home etc.
