I see myself as a British Islander and would count all inhabitants of these isles in the same way (whether Irish, Scots or from the Isle of Man etc.). We have differing regional (and national) characteristics but I don't think they differ as much from each other as they do - as a whole - from mainland Europe. A man from Cork may have more in common with a Yorkshireman than the latter does with a Midlander but all three will have more in common with each other than with a Belgian. The English have been lost for a "windswept and interesting" tag in the face of constant Celtic cultural clamouring and I think being an Islander could reawaken the pioneering spirit in us all. *fashions davy crockett hat out of grey squirrel carcass*

Good away result, Nolan in top form, George McCartney the new Giggsy (loved Pearce's "McCartney's long and winding goal" pun - buy Aaron Lennon now Sam and give headline writers a break). :)-D

Camel probably belong in a sub-group with Wishbone Ash. What about Nazareth? Never really fashionable except in 'Not quite Deep Purple but-' circles but some good songs. -

No but I would say Gary Glitter/The Glitter Band if the word 'decent' hadn't been used in the thread title (is there a LESS fashionable band anywhere?)... though 50 million American sports fans can't be wrong surely? -
... and the good old schnitzelgruber alliance when W.Germany beat Austria 1-0 in 1982 to shaft the Algerians... led to the new rule of playing final group games at same time

I DO know that Hockney spends his time riding the Southern rails with his baseball cap jammed over his eyes and talking gibberish to himself. Don't approach him though or he will lash out.

Wings. And if Mud are being claimed along with Slade (too cool surely? especially in their original skinhead incarnation) and the truly never-fashionable Showaddywaddy then what price The Rubettes? (would you believe 9 albums??) -

well... that's Peter Taylor for you... that 'surprising' FA Cup quarter final defeat by Wycombe still rankles in Leicester... Though there is subtle cheating... and there's sending off the goalie after 2 minutes...

It's about the new England squad playing together as often as they can. And about getting Gerrard to grow up or retire - that ridiculous faffing about for 20 minutes before putting up his hand "Sir? Sir my leg hurts!" and going off can't be put up with any more. Yes he's great for Liverpool but maybe that's the problem, he's treated as a God 24/7 so when he comes to an England game and receives less than godlike treatment he sulks. I think these new young players with one or two older heads to guide and a further influx from the U21s should be the way forward.

I travelled on the Croydon tram network for the first time a couple of weeks ago and it was weirdly wonderful. Like being on a bus that was driving along the railway line. As it starts (at Wimbledon station) on the adjacent platform to the train you arrive on it's as convenient as heck too.

Waitrose or M&S TYPE supermarket - do we want one on LL?

But is it a bad idea and a cause of division because we don't have one? Perception v Reality? And would not having one make these divisions disappear? *picks at scab* -
Jogger on Peckham Rye (Road) this evening
maxxi replied to Miss P's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
When I took my test (via Peckham BSM in a Metro back in the 80s) being aware of a zebra crossing was a driver's responsibilty. You were told that as you approched one you should be aware that - though they shouldn't just jump out - pedestrians could walk across at short notice so you should slow down and be extra alert. Like those signs in Australia warning about the possibility of big red 'roos crossing the road without notice. I think eye contact has a lot to do with it. If a pedestrian makes eye contact with the driver an understanding can be reached but that requires both parties to be paying attention. -
@Parkdrive - look, you nearly got him (scout Steve Rowley was keen apparently) but Arsene said no so let it go. You don't have to run him down all the time now because he's a lilywhite. And Gerrard wasn't so immense at the last WC was he? @Otta - I meant about time the England manager looked beyond the big-shot-I-have-player-power enclave of Gerrard, Ferdinand, Terry, Lampard etc. - stopped worrying about big names sulking if they didn't get it and appointed on today's merit.

I can imagine you > chuckling away whilst you typed that, your tiny > little brain lost in a paroxysm of mirth about > just how unbelievably witty you are. No doubt your > parents are very, very proud. What a ridiculous overreaction. My jibe about the size of your legs was a response to your use of the word 'massive' when referring to the 'detour' when it is clearly none of the sort. Anyone can see that and if you are truly disabled particularly by having very little legs I am sorry but that is merely a faux pas and not an intentional anti-disabled attack. You did not say "As a disabled pedestrian..." and make the point that the new crossings would be of enormous benefit to one disabled as you were, which would have been fair and reasonable comment, so there was nothing to suggest that you were anything other than an able-bodied pedestrian who could walk the extra FEW yards. I wonder why you would call it a massive detour without explaining why it is particularly massive for you but then your triumphalism and gloating in having - as you see it - caught someone out being anti-disabled is probably fun for you. Or perhaps you are not disabled? Perhaps you are as able-bodied as the peckhamboy who posted about playing cricket and wanting to join a team (with no mention of a disability that might make things difficult - particularly as you desribe yourself as "I'm mainly a bowler though, i'd much rather be playing on a massive pitch!"). But surely not. No. I must again be mistaken because nobody who wasn't a complete wretch would behave in such a manner just to dish out insults would they?

Then you'll love my bogof offer - buy 'Trevor Brooking - the Autobiography' (unsigned) and get the Haynes Owners Workshop Manual for VW Scirocco 1982-1990. A festive saving at only ?10 (plus ?20 handing-it-over fee). See, it costs more 'cause it's older an' stuff.
