  1. Thank you for posting this. Fantastic. Although here since 98 I hadn't realised just how much things have changed. Jagger.
  2. Sally thanks for posting this. Glad to hear you are back home and wish you all the best.
  3. Yet another recommendation for Steve the Spin Doctor who repaired my dishwasher and tumble dryer this morning. Really pleasant, no-nonsense approach, reliable and good value.
  4. That is excellent. Thanks once again to EDF and thanks to sanity girl. Jagger
  5. My daughter starts at the Hamlet in September (3S) and I have foolishly mislaid the information with the link and password for the online uniform sales which was given to us at the new parents' induction. The school office is closed until the first day back (3rd September). If anyone can PM me the link and password (I think this is universal and not personal?) I'd be grateful - thanks. Kind regards Jagger.
  6. Thanks to all for advice and leads, and thanks to the Forum. My daughter may have secured a placement. Jagger.

Hi just to clarify this would be in a voluntary capacity - i.e. work experience would be unpaid. Although she would eventually like to work in psychiatry or surgery she is realistic in that any work experience would be in this setting rather than in this field - i.e. that she would be answering phones, filing etc. If anyone has any suggestions do please PM me. Thank you.
  8. Hi my daughter is currently sitting GCSEs and will be 16 in July. She is studying locally and already has two GCSEs at A* (ICT and Maths Statistics) and is taking a further 9 GCSEs. She hopes to study Medicine. She is highly trustworthy and hardworking (and is a volunteer Police Cadet). She hasn't been able to secure a work placement as yet for this summer, so if anyone is able to offer her work in a medical setting for a week or so (she would ideally eventually like to work in Psychiatry or Surgery) do please PM me. Thank you.
  9. In the early seventies the shops in the parade on Lordship Lane where Streamline was included a Spar (the lady who ran it had a budgie in a cage), Mr Rossi's sweet shop which would put Hope and Greenwood to shame with its selection of sweets in jars, the hardware shop run by a man in brown overalls, and Mr Nee's chemist where Barcelona was (it became a restaurant called La Pharmacia for a while, retaining all the fixtures and fittings - wooden cabinets and large glass apothecary bottles on display). Walsh Glazing on Shawbury Road was an ice cream factory I think for a while, with the ice cream vans in the area based there. I also remember Jones and Higgins in Pekham - they used to have a menagerie in the basement at Christmas. One year they brought in a tiger (these were the days when you could buy lion cubs in Harrods). picapica Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > suzuki1000steve Wrote: > -------------------------------------------------- > ----- > > jack Wrote: > > > -------------------------------------------------- > > > ----- > > > Does anyone know what happened to Steamline > > > motorcycles at the top of Lordship lane, I > > bought > > > my first bike there in 1958 it was a really > > > powerfull 250cc BSA CLG, if the wind was > behind > > it > > > could manage all of 60mph, the shop started > as > > a > > > single unit and soon took over several > adjacent > > > shops, the last time I saw it about 1973 it > > seemed > > > to be doing well so I was supprised to see it > > has > > > gone, does anyone know what happened to the > > owners > > > I think they were Mike and Neal > > > > > > The shop is now a tile shop, I think Topps > tiles. > > > > The guy that used to work there was called > Tony, > > and whilst Streamlines was doing very well, I > > think developers won the day with money. 10. It's always useful to speak to the Head and maybe some prospective teachers to find out their attitude and approach. Also useful to know about classroom sizes and after school activities/ provision, ask to see some samples of recent (pupils') work and also ask about their policy of working with children with special educational needs. May also be useful to find out whether music lessons are on offer - some schools loan out musical instruments. This helps you build an overall picture of a school, regardless of which sector, whether state or private.
  11. Can anyone recommend a suitable private space for two adults, a teenager and one four year-old child to meet near Dulwich Plough? We will be meeting once a fortnight probably on Thursdays from 5.30pm to 6.30pm. My daughter's taking part in a Healthy Eating (HELP)trial run by Great Ormond Street and this involves counselling sessions once a fortnight for the next six months. HELP's budget is ?15 for the hour. Dulwich Library, Christchurch, upstairs at Soupdragon and Push studios options have all been explored. Any suggestions gratefully received.
  12. Pugwash this must have been awful for you and your husband for the guy to have ended up in your kitchen. The guy initially had a go at smashing our front window with a brick several times to get in the house, then when challenged (as people were in) mumbled 'sorry', left behind an empty bottle of Port and an empty can of lager then just shambled up the street and went on to break into/ attempt to break into a few more homes, pausing only to be sick down an alleyway, my builder in hot pursuit having alerted the police. My daughter got a cut leg from the resulting glass debris and of course we were left with having to replace the glass in the window but I dread to think of what would have happened had he got in. Well done to your husband for staying so level-headed.
  13. That would be at my house which was his first 'attempt' of the afternoon. Raffles he ain't given the clumsy try at gaining entry. Luckily people were there so the police were alerted straight away.
  14. This is to do with a number of alleged break ins that happened today along Barry Road. Can't post any more as Police are investigating.
  15. Hi ClareC I am an adult with a tomato allergy (my 4-yr old is also allergic to tomatoes). I can however eat organic vine-ripened tomatoes (ok ok how middle class etc...) without my lips swelling and mouth blistering as a rule. It has been explained to me that tomatoes can produce histamines in reaction to chemicals, disease or pollution and it is this that the body reacts to. Hope this helps.
  16. Hi we called the police when we we couldn't get out of our drive a few months ago who said it was definitely down to the council. Southwark couldn't send anyone out so we ended up having to call a cab (I had to get somewhere in a hurry and was already running too late to get the two buses I would have had to take to get there). My understanding was that you only needed planning permission for a dropped kerb if you live on an 'A' road (which we do) but may be worth checking this out.
  17. Hi - apologies I have been offline the last few days (and sorely missing EDF I might add). Going by what's posted up outside the post office it looks indeed like the whole building would close (should the hotel plans go ahead) as there will be building works and refurbishment going on - there's no mention of the pub and restaurant staying open. They will also be demolishing the garages at the back and building staff quarters, and putting in car park spaces. When the planning application is submitted things will become clearer, but I think it's at the consultation stage at the moment.
  18. Yes this is definitely the Crown and Greyhound in Dulwich Village. There is a notice up (not a planning application notice but an information sheet) outside the post office in Dulwich Village. The pub are proposing to convert the building into a twenty-room hotel. They will retain the function room at the front of the building, and convert the function room at the back of the building into (part of the) accommodation. The pub and the restaurant will remain. Should this go ahead, the building will close for 15-17 months while the works are undertaken.
  19. Hi my oldest child had colic and was inconsolable, crying for hours in the early evening when she was a baby. I feel for you as it is very hard when your baby cries and there doesn't seem anything you can do to soothe him/ her. What seemed to help us was a few sessions of cranial osteopathy (she was a forceps delivery which apparently makes a difference) - not sure if it was the six sessions of this or the fact that this coincided with her growing out of it that stopped the regular crying sessions but it made me feel better at least! Now I'm dealing with teenage temper tantrums and colic seems a picnic by comparison... Our cranial osteopath was Ian Wright (this was twelve years ago) but I think he is now based in Ireland. King's college hospital recommended cranial osteopathy to me for my last child through the breastfeeding counsellor (Claire Kedves if she is still there)and had contact details if you need them. Hope that is helpful and remember that this will pass...

Hmmmm...perhaps not such great advice for those of us who live on those roads... Location can be a factor but as other posters have suggested, keeping your valuables concealed is important, as is perhaps possibly keeping your phone separate from your wallet, separate from your keys etc.. Keeping the Safer Neighbourhoods Team informed after the event is important as they can build a picture of what's going on (bearing in mind the need to phone 999 if the crime is taking place at the time or you witness a crime that is underway).
  21. Hi I found the party shop in the small parade of shops opposite Forest Hill library/ the (temporarily closed) Forest Hill baths very reasonable and reliable for filled helium balloons. Apologies I can't remember the name of the shop but it may be worth a visit.
