PS. also never said you should feel guilty. You've put a lot of words in to my mouth that someone else may have said but I certainly haven't. I even said I may send my kids private of I had the cash. I am anti the private school system because I think it's very unfair. But I don't blame the people that use it. I'm very very anti Amazon not paying enough tax, but I don't condemn the people (me included) that take advantage of their often cheap prices. PPS. When were you at Aske's? I'm told I did an entrance exam but have no memory of it (and I do remember my interview with the headmaster). Remember doing an exam at primary school but that was just the banding exam everyone did.

Maybe read back a bit and point out where I've insulted anyone or called private education poisonous. All I've said is that those that can afford it are in a privileged position over those that can't. See also those that can afford to move to where the best state schools are. I've made no judgement, I've just stated something that is a fact. Save it for someone that is actually insulting you. I'm not jealous of you, I am quite content with my lot, but to deny a privilege, even one you've worked hard to earn, is a nonsense.

I've been through the system too, and I don't know how you can label state education as a turd, that is pretty bloody insulting to everyone who doesn't have the choices you have. Of course there are good and bad schools, but that is a ludicrous generalisation. I guess a large part of it is down to when you bought your house (I mean "you" general, not YOU). If you've paid off a large portion of your mortgage, and have a good deal, then this might be possible. If like me you only got on the ladder recently, then there is absolutely no way you're going to be able to afford ?15k a year for child care / schooling. Just not possible.

"Politicians are the only ones who deliberately put themselves in the public eye." That is utter nonsense. I'm not suggesting that anyone should have any ownership over their private lives, but if you choose a career as an entertainer of any sort, then by definition you are choosing to put yourself in the public eye. In fact your success in your chosen career (actor / comedian / band member) depends on what the public think of your performance. -
Just to add, that if a child can't pass an entrance exam, especially if they're tutored, then a competetive private school probably isn't right for them anyway.
-
If you can afford private, then you can probably afford the tuition needed to get them through the exam. That's not judging, it's stating a fact. You're clearly in a position to afford it, so good luck to you. When you say "How many of you have actually been through the inner city state school system?", do you mean as pupils or parents? And are you suggesting that it's just so terrible your boy would stand no chance?

My dad worked in the market for years, and whilst it was a bit grimey, it was great, so many cool little shops. I do think that's a loss. But hey, lots of other people would have thought it was a shit hole and will prefer their little bars and stuff. At the end of the day whatever makes the most money will win out.

I guess guest presenters are paid more of a one off fee, this probably wouldn't have been part of his contracted work.

Agree. Can't remember who it was now but remember an A lister saying exactly this, they just said they wanted people to leave them alone whilst they were eating, but other than that they felt posing for photos or signing autographs was part of their (VERY well paid) job. -
I was reading about this yesterday. I totally sympathise with those that feel they're being alienated from their home, and I definitely am against the development around the arches. But there are plenty of comments from people (including young people) who say they grew up there and much prefer it now. I think with gentrification there is always a line where it goes too far. What I really don't like it gentrification on a large scale involving developers. That's when people start to feel like social cleansing is at play. But stopping an area feeling dangerous after dark is never a bad thing.

I'm not one of the people that called anyone a snob, but I have no.idea how you could call state schools poison or turn any of the anti private school arguments on their head against state. You're in a position to send your kids private either because you're minted or because you're really tightening your belts. The majority don't have that option even if they put all their spare resources towards it, so you need to accept that you're in a privileged position. I make no judgement on that, but that is how it is.

Our drummer has only used his own kit about twice since he bought it. Usually he just rocks up to gigs with cymbals and breakables. -

Well said toffeese15 LondonMix Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Wanting your children to have more than you do in this country is seen as crass which is nuts and why this place still has a ruling elite that hasn't changed much in decades... I think that''s a nonsense to be honest. I want the best for my kids, as I'm sure does everyone. But MOST people simply don't have the choice of private education even if they save hard. Even those who say "we've made sacrifices" are still wealthy compared to those of us who couldn't afford it even if we didn't eat. It's a system for the wealthy and it maintains the social devide in this country. I'm not judging the people that do it, if I won the lottery and felt it would be best for my kids I might even do it too, but I'd admit that it is what it is, education for the privileged.

Alas I don't have the free time to join in (I'm very keen to start playing more bass again, used to be pretty good but play more guitar these days). But if you get this going and want a local rehearsal space have a look at this place ion Peckham. Very good rates. http://superunisonstudios.com/ -
