Shredded paper in garden recycling
oimissus replied to oimissus's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Thanks all - no real consensus, and of course the Southwark website isn?t very helpful. I?ve not shredded anything other than paper (ie nothing coated or plasticized - that would be the death of my feeble shredder if nothing else - so it is just paper, made from wood. -
?4. The clever clogs amongst you talk about parallel routes for cyclists. I don't know what these are (back to my 20 years of commuting). I could go via the Rye and Nunhead if heading, say for Queens Road Peckham Station, but don't see any advantages of going via Bellenden. Do educate me? Your tone suggests your aren?t interested in being ?educated? but surely using Bellenden depends on where you start and your end destination. If you?re heading west from the top of Rye Lane you go past the top of Bellenden and the top of Lyndhurst, in which case the benefit is obvious. And for the station to seamlessly link up with the buses, which it should, the other obvious benefit is a route which might take a couple of minutes longer but avoids a road filled with double deckers. I mean, as you think it?s fine for those getting the bus to Rye Lane, either to link with the train or to shop, to be shunted off elsewhere, I don?t understand why you think it so important for Rye Lane to be a cycle route. Using Bellenden, for example, would add far less time on to your cycle journey than it would to many forced to walk from the displaced bus to the station or shops.

Is it possible to put shredded paper in the garden recycling? We?re having a big clear out and our normal recycling is going to get overwhelmed by this (and I don?t have any paper bags or envelopes to put it in anyway). I know my dad always put shredded paper into his compost heap but I also know Southwark have some funny rules about this kind of thing. TIA

sainsbury local lordship lane incident
oimissus replied to jojobaby's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Thanks for sharing that, Sue - my daughter and her friends saw the resuscitation from the bus so I?m glad to tell them that the person survived and is being cared for in hospital. -

Realistically they could probably have just snuck through anyway, or, as you say, just pushed the bikes through. Sounds like a couple of lowlifes looking to start a fight. I hope everyone is OK, I didn?t even want to watch the videos, reading about it was bad enough. (And nothing to do with the LTN as that?s only applicable during the week. The planters aren?t solely to do with the LTN, they are elsewhere in the borough.)

Dying of what? We know the numbers of people are dying within a month of testing positive for a Covid but that doesn?t mean they are dying of Covid. The media were forced into making this distinction a while ago, would be good if forum users could do the same. AM - just be politely assertive and ask, in advance if possible, for masks to be worn and shoes to be removed. Perhaps have a stock of disposable masks and overshoes to hand.

My daughter is year 7 and has been going to school by herself since Year 6 (15 min walk then, 8 min train journey plus short walks either side now). She?s been meeting friends in a local park and they go to a nearby corner shop for chocolate and ice cream also since year 6. She has a phone and is very good at keeping in touch with us. She?s nearly 12.

Petrol at the station next to Tesco near Goose Green playground. Didn?t have to wait too long. I think the BP station near the roundabout at the top of Lordship Lane also had petrol today.

Southwark Recycling centre permit - postcode not working
oimissus replied to Ginster's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
It was working earlier in the week as I booked in for Wednesday no bother at all, so sounds like a problem with the site. Hope it gets sorted soon. -
That seems more of an argument for some additional bus routes, Sally. I just can?t get over the number of journeys going through Peckham Rye station and yet there are suggestions that the train station should not be smoothly linked with buses. I can only assume that none of those supporting those kinds of measures are commuters. It?s got nothing to do with disliking LTNs and everything to do with astonishment that public transport, which benefits the majority, especially those with limited mobility, and local businesses don?t seem to matter to many people. In my opinion, far better to keep the pavements clear of overspill from shops and stalls, and unnecessary street furniture, to allow the most amount of room for pedestrians, bring back the buses to allow smooth interconnection with the station and access to shops, keep cars off the Lane, have dedicated times for delivery vans and divert the cyclists to quieter roads alongside Rye Lane (and ensuring a decent amount of bike racks on the Lane). I was at the PeckhamPlex for the first time in ages yesterday and while it was great when everyone piled out that people could walk along the road, I am glad that I could just walk home easily (I live less than 10 mins from Rye Lane) rather than having to trek 500/600 km to the bus stop (luckily it wasn?t raining) or bring my car.

So why not just reopen Rye Lane and that?s the end of it? Why the repeated consultations? Is it because Southwark hope that if they ask the question enough times they?ll get the newer they want? The fact of the 6 and 18 month consultations is evidence enough that permanently reopening Rye Lane is in question.
-
My point is that you claimed the 6 and 18 mont consultations were ?completely fictitious?. Now you?re saying ?that?s totally correct?? It seems a fair assumption that if they are planning to have further consultations, that means that they have not ruled out closing the street to buses again in the future.
-
That Southwark News article doesn?t back up what your claiming, dogkennelhillbilly. The article states quite clearly that there will be further consultations after 6 and 18 months, and of course the reopening has been delayed since that article was published. The arguments for the reopening to buses in the article are far more persuasive that those for it being kept closed.

I find it baffling. How can any council be against public transport? This is London, millions of us use public transport daily to get to work, school, visit family, go shopping, visit museums, galleries, theatres and museums. And there is no way I would walk 600 metres down Rye Lane in the dark to catch a bus, something that not just those with reduced mobility can?t do, but many women and girls simply won?t do. But we know how many people get buses to Peckham Rye station, I just don?t understand why that?s not understood. Kieron Williams is pretty local, he must know this. I don?t get it.

Husband cycled out to Greenwich yesterday, didn?t like cycling along the path there at all, I think he said lots of cobbles? He goes very early so don?t know about number of people. Today he cycled to Keston Common, took him about 90 minutes there (uphill) and back. Couldn?t give you the route as he weaves about all over the place. He came back via the Pool River.

Goose Green councillors - how can we help?
oimissus replied to jamesmcash's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Oh, absolutely. It is impossible to raise that amount of money, in such a short period of time, from so few cameras, by mistake. 'Income stream' indeed - regardless of the intent, the implementation is nothing to do with reducing emissions and everything to do with raising money. -
kids opting for covid vaccine without parents permission
oimissus replied to bodsier's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I don?t know how children of 12 can be deemed competent to know if a brand new vaccine is worth them taking with the side effects weighed up against the benefits with regards to a new disease. Plenty of adults are unsure about it! I certainly don?t think that school staff should be the ones to assess that competency. -
I?ve just found out that the Thameslink line to Orpington via Catford is reducing its service from tomorrow. Great. 2 trains an hour in the ?rush? hour.

I've had a quick look at that link and correct me if I'm wrong but that data is from April 2021. So we were still coming out of the spring lockdown at that point. Can you let me know on what basis you are claiming that this reduction is due to the LTN, rather the lockdown? How is it possible to know?

I can?t imagine doing without our car (which has such low emissions we don?t pay any vehicle tax). Although I didn?t often drive to my mother?s in north west London when she was terminally ill as it?s slower except at the weekends, my car was invaluable when it came to clearing her house and getting it ready to sell which dragged on for months. She was also reliant on someone driving her car, or driving her, to leave the house at all for the final two years - she put me on her car insurance. We also use it for our U.K. holidays in the countryside and for days out - we?ve been to the seaside twice in the last couple of days - for getting out of London to recharge it?s invaluable. We also need it to visit both my in laws, neither of whom live near a station and they don?t visit us as they hate the journey to Peckham now they?re getting on, and as my M-I-L was shielding for quite a while they won?t use public transport. Being without a car is fine if your world is very local and you?re fit enough to manage public transport.

Foxy has rightly pointed out that a charity shop is unlikely to want a Guinness Book of Records from the 70s. Why do you think charity shops wants unsaleable books? What do you think they?ll do with all the crap that?s donated to them? I used to run the book stall at my daughter?s primary school. People seemed to think that is was fine to donate torn, scribbled-in, encrusted-with-food, missing pages books. They all went into the bin. Because no-one would buy them. Would you?
