Wake up and smell the coffee!
Muttley replied to thelittlecoffeevan's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
...and when you've established yourselves, you can move into the long vacant retail space across the road at GV15. They're probably desperate for offers by now. They might even pay you to move in. -

The estate behind Dulwich Hamlet football ground
Muttley replied to Weegee's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip

Others can fill in more details, but broadly this: What is now Sainsbury's car park was (until about 1992??) sports ground for Kings College, with tennis courts at the top end, a sloping cricket/football pitch lower down. The land occupied by the Sainsbury building itself was also presumably part of the sports ground. Dulwich Hamlet football stadium was roughly in the same location as it is now, but had a big old stand so probably had a larger footprint than the modern ground. At the end of St Francis Road was the old St Francis Hospital (ex workhouse, according to others). Wasn't there also a residential block for staff, which I remember as being several storeys and post-war. The small block now occupied by Domino Pizza was semi-derelict until Domino refurbished it in the 90s. -
Is it just me, or is our new friend the palm tree looking a little bit unwell - leaf tips turning brown, and what looks like a dead branch. Maybe it's the lack of sunshine. Is there a tree doctor in the house?

There's a potential limerick here, involving Tyrrel, Squirrel and Wirral.

Stretch between Mr Liu and corner of Colwell Road is pretty dire.

Talking of bookies, wasn't Woolwich due to become a Bet Fred? That's all gone quiet.

Great to see events coming back to the park. You have a difficult task finding a film that's well known enough to attract interest, but not so popular that everyone's seen it ten times. I've voted for Tiffanys because it's the only one I've never seen. I don't think ?7.50 is unreasonable for an evening of cinema in such classy surroundings. (Greenwich Odeon is ?8.)

Re Pepys Road, here's an old rhyme on the subject (by the way, I go with Peeps, peeps): There are people I'm told, some say there are heaps, Who speak of the talkative Samuel as "Peeps"; And some so precise and pedantic their step is, Who call the delightful old diarist " Peppis"; But those I think right, and I follow their steps Ever mention the garrulous gossip as "Pepps. " Yet Wheatley declares that the truth still escapes, For Pepys was not "Pepps" nor "Peeps"; he was "Papes."

Shopping Parade near East Dulwich Station
Muttley replied to JamieT's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Talk was of a new library and flats to go on the site of the Garden centre, I assume that's still going ahead. If they ever manage to get a coffee shop to lease the vacant space below the new flats opposite the station, that might give the ED Grove stretch a boost. It's been To Let for over a year now so don't hold your breath. -
------------------------------------------------------- > american garden (rhododendron patch) in Dulwich > park > > or japanese garden (bit by the stream) in Peckham > Rye Those would be exactly my two choices, Mightyroar - the japanese garden probably just shades the other, for me. Fancy a picnic before the wasp season?

What is East Dulwich Missing - Food Wise
Muttley replied to SweetShopDan's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Creperie is a great idea. Or how about a bagel restaurant? In Charlottesville Virginia USA, a university town that's culturally very like East Dulwich*, they have a restaurant called Bodo's Bagels. For years Bodo's has been THE place that folk like to meet to eat. * Full of professionals, young-ish, strong community spirit, centre of town full of restaurants, lots of trees...etc. -
Toxic Fumes and a plague of large flying ants in LL
Muttley replied to Grotty's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
It was ant day in our house about a week ago, so it looks like the plague is slowly heading north up Lordship Lane. -

I'm sure they called themselves the Sainsbury's Freezer Centre, though they did indeed sell frozen food, not freezers.

Thanks to the back of a cornflake packet when I was a lad, I've never forgotten that.... Two and a quarter pounds of jam Weigh about a kilogram And that... A litre of water's A pint and three quarters.

I wonder if the decline in parties in East Dulwich is correlated with the growth in the number of young children in these parts. House parties may be fun for everyone at 9pm, but when they are still going at 4am, with throbbing music and 'guests' throwing up in the street, and when you have spent the previous few nights trying to get your infants to sleep, they are hell. I fear the day when those young children turn into teenagers, and locals can't afford to move out to Kent. That Grinch bloke had a point.

Imperial measurements are more intuitive and more natural. The other day my young daughter asked me how long a foot is. "It's about the length of my foot", I said.

What is East Dulwich Missing - Food Wise
Muttley replied to SweetShopDan's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
There is (was?) a great place in Clapham called French Tarts, savoury and sweet takeaways, a great alternative to the bog standard pizza. That's one Clapham institution that I would be happy to import to East Dulwich. (And imagine all that hilarity every time somebody says 'what do you fancy?' and you can reply 'I fancy some French Tarts tonight'.) -
jonsuissy Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > any ideas on the "unknown" That unknown pic has appeared here before, Macroban probably, think you'll find it's taken from the top of the old fire station looking down at the top of Court Lane where it joins Lordship Lane. Some great pics here Jonsuissy.

AndrewDBlack Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > My other bete noir is year numbers at school. > Year 11 - what's that in proper momey (N'th Form) Most schools are still 'bilingual', in that they'll refer to Year 11s, but also to the 'sixth form'. A shortcut I use is to add 4 to the Year number to get the age of (most of) the pupils in a class. So Year 11s are 15 (= the fifth form).

Somebody lives there, the old shop will no doubt eventually get done up as living space, can't believe it will ever go back to being a shop. Karter knows something about the background as I recall.

Or maybe this is about the palm tree on the LL roundabout...not heard anything about that for a while.

Harris Academy for boys on Peckham Rye approved
Muttley replied to Dr De Soto's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
George, I respect you for being prepared to put the case for the academy on Wednesday, especially since it was quite a hostile environment. My impression was that most of the people who presented on both sides were sincere, and acting in what they felt are the best interests of the area. I really do hope the school succeeds, and as others have said, now the decision on size looks irreversible, we're going to have to try to make the most of it. I still feel that Tessa Jowell's claim that the majority of the local area supported the Harris plan (with the implication that everyone knew about the scale) was disingenuous.
