  1. Sue Have a look at this link (you'll need to click on the 2nd page of the videos and select the Blue Tit one). http://www.bbc.co.uk/autumnwatch/yourmovies/gallery_unusual.shtml Saw it on telly the other night, footage of Blue Tits picking away at the paintwork - looking for insects according to the experts.
  2. *go* saw them at Coachella a few years ago and they were ace, had similar reservations about my fave band 'The Only Ones' but saw them when they reformed and they were marvelous. Though not a pretty sight, not a pretty sight at all.
  3. As it happens I was in the Dulwich Woodhouse pub yesterday and saw a flier that they're doing a Christmas Fayre, can't remember any more details than that, but think they were looking for sellers. I'd not recommend going there for Sunday dinner mind, but that's not relevant to this thread!

  5. You are unlikely to be bothered about the football noise unless you are particularly sensitive. The club rarely attracts crowds of over a few hundred and is generally only used a couple of times a week. You can hear the crowds if you're outdoors but your unlikely to hear them through a closed window, and it's only sporadic cheering anyway, it's not a big deal and can be quite a welcoming sound to be hones. The games only last 90 mins so it's really not a worry. If you're really concerned, then there's a game on tomorrow night so just hang about it in the street and listen! Or else go along and it will allay your fears, its a good night / afternoon out actually. Can't really help on the security side, I thought the houses that back onto the park are quite well protected by high walls and lots of shrubbery. Your biggest annoyance is likely to be the dulcet sound of trolley bags being wheeled down the street every morning by commuters!
  6. My original post was a flippant response to a previous thread about schools, and the rather curious tone of this thread which seemed to register shock that there might be, gasp, people that use a shabby old post office! I'm surprised anyone wouldn't find a post office useful, and yes there are always queues but that's because they offer about 4 billion different services, which is what makes them useful! I just find the whole tone of the first few posts rather curious and at worst somewhat patronising.
  7. I look forward to the day that there is a post office for middle income professionals only. Only joking. What's the point of this thread, I'm not sure I undertand?
  8. Actually scratch that in case anyone's tempted...
  9. Thanks for telling us what you arranged councillor. Could you please also explain how much money was spent on installing Help Points around the Borough which were never functional and have recently been removed at great expense? Was that your idea too?
  10. 55 posts in and no-one has mentioned the wonderful Nina Simone Here she is tearing at the heartstrings with 'If You Knew". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAv1FDpdnmE
  11. It does seem very strange, especially as it's got to the stage of going to court. Several years ago I had a call from the police who accused me of being in an accident, I'd been driving in the area where the accident happened but had not been involved in or seen an accident. I asked them to come and inspect the car, and they said they already had! They'd found no damage so left it at that. So mistakes do happen but it seems odd that it's got to the insurance company stage. All I can suggest is going to the Citizens Advice Bureau who will doubtless have come across this sort of issue before and would give you some clear advice on what to do next. One thing you might want to consider (and I don't wish to upset you further!), is if a car with a cloned number plate (the same as yours) has been invovled in an accident. Number plate cloning is reasonably common - if you just google it there's lots of advice on what to do and some of the issues it can cause. Hope you get it sorted.
  12. Evening nature lovers! I haven't been to Rye park for ages and it sounds like there's loads going on nature wise so I must have a look. I thought the Kingfisher was a wind up but obviously not! Anyway, I saw this on a leaflet and thought it might be of interest to some of you. It's an eveing tour of the 'Medicine Garden' at the Horniman, another place I haven't been to for a while. More info in the link http://www.horniman.ac.uk/events/thursday.php
  13. For what it's worth I can recommend support act The Gaslight Anthem, saw them recently at the Forum and they were fab, the last album The '59 Sound is a good un too. Hope you enjoy the boss.

Barry - thanks very much for checking, I'd figured it was to do with the railways as there's one outside Denmark Hill, but as you suggest it's Southwark. Apparently they were installed in Spring 2008 and have never been connected or finished and are now beginning to rust. I'll follow up with the council - thanks again.
  15. Thanks for all the hard work Barry. One things been bugging me for a while - a "Help Point" appeared outside ED station (near the post box and bus stop) about a year ago, it's never been connected and just stands there looking a bit forlorn with some wires hanging out. There's one in a similar state at Denmark Hill station. Not sure it's within your remit but could if it is could it either be connected or removed please? Thanks again.
  16. Is this thread an ironic one like Bob's "what's your favourite colour?", will Dulwich Mum be all over it criticising its lack of intellectual vigour?, did Mickeycg quit in vain?, the ED forum is sooooo confusing these days, it must be the heat...
  17. Sorry Sue - I didn't see that! Yep it's really called a White Death Crab Spider or Misumena vatia to give it its Latin name. You can see were it gets the 'crab' name from in this photo - not for the squeamish! http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/pictures/showphoto.php/photo/4456
  18. I like this thread, it's good to know there's all this nature on our doorstep! So, more random observations from me... This week I have mostly been spotting garden pests, had millions of blackfly covering the tips and flowers of a Guilder Rose, the Rosemary Beetles are back and something's nibbling at the Lilies but I've not yet spotted a Scarlet Lili Beetle. Best spot though was the magnificently named White Death Crab Spider - apparently it's a bit of a chameleon and will change colour to suit the flower it's sitting on....be afraid. http://janies-rainy-day.blogspot.com/2007/04/white-death-spider.html
  19. This is a bit random but it's nature based so I'll put it here! I'd always wondered what those weeds with pretty blue flowers are that are in abundance at the moment. There's lots of them around ED station at the mo. Anyhow they are called Green Alkanet and the flowers are edible. So now you know! http://www.dgsgardening.btinternet.co.uk/alkanet.htm

    Great Gigs

Don't know if anyone is a fan but the wonderful Mr Jonathan Richman, accompanied by his drummer Mr Tommy Larkins begins a four night London tour on Saturday, starting at Bush Hall (a great little venue). He's then at Hoxton Square Bar on Sunday, Dingwalls Monday and the Borderline Tuesday. He's a great live performer, funny, sad, and life affirming. Here he is doing "I was dancing in the Lesbian bar"
  21. Actually - Keef said it better than I did!
  22. I don't rally see a problem as this forum is all about local opinions and observations. It would be good if some of the criticism was tempered with more threads praising local places, though these often seem to raise suspicion. That said I disike threads slagging off identifiable individuals at local shops, which is just rude and out of order. Why don't you start "an everything in ED is nice, and all the shops are lovely thread?"
  23. The squirrels are a pain but they don't seem to bother the birds that much. The most aggressive littel fella is the robin which chases off any other robins on his patch!

SaveShambo Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > talking of nature bursting forth, can you get into > dulwich park early morning for a pre-work walk, or > do you have to wait for the gates to open? I envy you your Jay! Only seen one Jay in the garden here. But have sat here today and enjoyed watching robins, blackbirds, blue tits and sparrows (a rare sight sparrows). Less pleased to see the big fat ring necked pigeon currently in the garden but at least it hoovers up all the remaining bits of bird seed.
