Current economic trends - call for evidence

I invested in a big button phone for my elderly sister and she is delighted with it. It is expensive but it has all that is required by the older user. Ps dont for get to remind gran that she has to always dial the code as well as the number, I had to explain that to my sister.

Jeremy wrote:- IMO the stimulus is going to be the same thing which got us into this mess in the first place - the city. I do not think the city is the answer, it has been in decline for many years and this will continue. Industry and what is produced here competitively, then sold abroad for a profit certainly will. Although we will never be able to sustain the population we have, from the resources available. -

We also by the way got 3 separate rings on the doorbell from guys with vans wanting to know if I'd like them to take our "scrap" away. They have a value to the scrapmen for the batteries and possibly the motors, I would have told them to help themselves if you had wanted to be rid of them, maybe if they come back ask how much they will give you for them you might get a fiver or so, but the council will give you nothing. I dont think anyone is casing the joint the council man who took the photo was probably sending that to the scrapmen so they new which door to knock in the road. Tell them you want a tenner for them or the council can have them, you might get a bottle of drinkable wine out of it for negotiating. -
I agree with candj it seems a vast improvement as the most busy road now takes precedent which improves mobility for the majority. When I first came across it I thought it was high time Southwark 'got it right' they were well overdue after the pigs ear they made of Half moon lane / village way junction where they changed the precedent to the mostly unused back street.

I heard of this on the 'Archers' some months back, Joe Grundy was writing IOU's like there was no tomorrow.

I remember hearing about a family the TV based a production on in the US of A who pooled all their resources including what the kids earned delivering papers etc. They ran the home as if it were a small country, and they apportioned the money out for food, mortgage, transport, clothes and Tax if I remember correctly. If there was an excess then that went on holidays, entertainment, and other 'non-essentials'. I think every politician should be trained this way before embarking on their careers.

NHS staff - 50% higher rate of sickies
SteveT replied to MrBen's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Your wife in all her time served in the nhs has never noticed the amount of hugely obese personell who seem to gravitate towards the nhs then Timster. I wonder if they are employable by any other company? -

San Izal, it takes me right back to the time when you could use a single sheet at a time, it was useless but you could use a single sheet.

Timster wrote:- I'm sorry but that last sentence - that is, the last 16 words of it - is complete and utter nonsense!! What is so frustrating is people throwing out these sorts of comments without any evidence - in this case not even anecdotal - to back it up! What more evidence could you possibly need than to go and look in any hospital anywhere in the land and you will see them for yourself Timster, not everyone who gets paid by the NHS, works for them. Anecdotal evidence might come from the twenty five years I have travelled to almost every major ITU in the land from Cornwall to Edinburgh and the Isle of Wight to Aberytswyth. My ex-wife is a Consultant and too many of whom she worked with neglected their NHS patients, in favour of the cash from the private sector. How much anecdotal evidence do you need Timster? I am sure AnnaJ and Bignumber5 have far more evidence of it than myself, being full-time employees in the industry. -
Who? First I've heard of it. Anyway I always wanted to be infamous, it's always sounded much more exciting than being chivalrous Sean. It's rather like a woman you fancy telling her best friend that you're 'nice'. You will never get under the covers with her with that unfavourable description.

SeanMG wrote:- On what basis do you make this kind of hypothesis Steve? Have a look around the world at countries with STABLE workforces. Now have a look at countries with UNSTA.. sory, I mean "flexible" workforces I am not as negative about it as you Sean, I see it as a positive thing which will create more short-term and later on long term employment, not less. It will strengthen industry long term too. I see it as a wealth creator for all involved. Sadly I am sometimes wrong or misguided in my beliefs.

If it was easier to get rid of staff then companies would shed and hire more readily, as it is a dire cock up by succeeding governments then this will be forever the case, where companies hold on to staff for as long as they can, which weakens the company often to destruction. One case I know of where the staff were being radically reduced at a company downsizing operation, was this one lady who had just been axed, went to the boss and hugged him and kissed him on both cheeks inspite of his downcast rigid stance, and said 'thankyou for employing me I've enjoyed working here and I do hope when all of this misery is over and you are back on your feet you will consider me a worthwhile employee in the future'. He didn't re-employ her ever again. He married her some years later.

We would all benefit from an educational system where the teacher was estimed and the class in front new there place, where the word discipline had value and any disruption in the room was punished so effectively it became a rarity. We would all benefit from having a system which could accomodate all the students, and parents did not have the anxiety of praying for a space in a school which was 'well thought of' rather than the dreadful place which is on offer.
