  1. Why not go right out into Kent? We did almost 3 years ago, having lived in East Dulwich for 51 years, the last 43 in the same house in Silvester Road. Bought that in 1970 and sold in 2013, at a BIG profit. Now living only 40 miles from there, just off the M20 Motorway, in a village between Ashford & Maidstone. The local station goes direct to Victoria Station. Having a great time spending the Equity, and just come back from Cuba over Xmas/New Year, our 12th holiday since we moved here. Yes, I am one of those who still pops onto the E.D. Forum now and again to see what's going on, and love reading all the stuff on here.

  3. Totally agree with you - I record it if I have to be out and watch later. TillieTrotter Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Has anyone else caught this. It's absolutely > heart warming and funny and tragic. The best > thing I've seen on TV in ages.

  6. Have you also now heard that the Nurse at the Hospital who gave out the information has committed suicide? Who's going to be the first to make snide remarks about that?

  9. Silvester Road will always be my favourite, followed by Oakhurst Grove. Known them both , woman and girl for 50 years.
  10. We went in for lunch earlier this year, before the latest fire, and they were no longer The Harvester but had reverted back to being The Grove. They didn't do the salad cart as the old Harvester did. The waitress who served us said lots of customers were not very happy that it had changed, when we said we wouldn't be going back. We loved the salad cart and I had to struggle to finish my mains too. That's the second fire I can remember in that place - the last one was in the 1990's. Gina

Me too Steveo. My late brother was born there in 1946, and my youngest daughter in 1966. Her two children were both born there, in 1986 and 1989. I worked there as a Medical Secretary - twice - the first time from 1964 - 1966 then again from 1968 - 1970. While researching my Family History, I found that my Paternal Great Grandfather died there too. I have many reasons to be sentimental about Dulwich Hospital.
  12. I would be happy to give any of the smaller blue boxes a home, if there are still any going spare please. Gina

Apparently the Council are only sweeping once a month now. I had no luck with the e-mail address James gave me, so sent him an e-mail direct, and also reported a light out in our road. The light was fixed within 2 days and then the road was swept!!!
  14. Hi computedshorty, Thank you so much for sharing your memories, and I do enjoy reading everything you write on here. One thing puzzles me though - why did you all not get evacuated? I went away aged 10 months to Rawtenstall in Lancashire, with my Mother and her elderly parents, after my Father went off to War. My Grandfather died there in 1943, and we came back to London, but were then sent away to Audenshaw in Manchester. I don't know how long we were in Manchester, but we did come back before the end of the War, as a bomb dropped a few streets away from where we were living, and a lump of shrapnel fell on the roof and windowsill of our house. My husband was also evacuated, and he was one of 6 children at the time. He was first sent to Surrey with his older brother, came back to London after a few months, but then went to Wales on his own in 1944, aged 8, and he had a terrible life there with the people who took him in. His parents stayed in London and there were 2 more children born, although the last one was born in Blackpool in 1944, so his Mother must have been evacuated there. I'm sure this has already been mentioned, but have you ever thought about publishing your memories? Thanks again. Gina
  15. Hi James, Are the street cleaners on strike? I live in Silvester Road, the Barry Road end, and it doesn't appear to have been swept lately. Should I ring somebody at the Council? Thanks. Gina
  16. We came through Grove Vale, round the roundabout and up Lordship Lane last night. No problem.
  17. There is to be a new system for 'flu injections, I was told yesterday, having rung at 11.30 and was the 3rd person in the 'phone queue. Walk in as from 9th October from 9 - 11 a.m. - I did ask how long I would have to wait and was told it was a "walk in service".
  18. Ours is a 4/5 bedroom house which doesn't have stripped floors or original fireplaces, nor decking in the garden, which are the things that seem to be the "in" thing today. We also have a loft and a cellar, together with a front and back garden but no garage. As this was our first purchase of a house, many, many years ago, we had no idea what sort of questions to ask, and were swayed by the original large amount quoted. Hopefully this is now a more realistic price. A lot of the stress is self-inflicted - I've been such a hoarder all these years - but I've managed to shift some things on the EDF and what doesn't sell goes to a Charity shop.
  19. Jeremy Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > It's not slow. But a think a lot of agents have > overvalued places, which isn't helping. A lot of > houses being reduced... I can agree with you there Jeremy. Our house went on the Market last March, and we had 9 viewing in the next four months, and halfway through we reduced the priced by ?20,000. We changed Agents in July, and today had our 12th viewing with them, having reduced the price a further ?30,000 in August. Today the price has gone down another ?25,000. The feedback up until today has been that "they like the house/the street/the area/the School catchment, but it will cost a lot to get the house to how they want it". We now hope the price is right for someone else to love this house as much as we have, as apparently there is about "six weeks" before the Market slows down/stops again.
  20. I will send you a p.m. with the details of my softener etc. Gina
  21. We've had a water softener for the past 14/15 years. We replaced the original one last year, which worked by electricity to the present one which works by water pressure alone. When my previous washing machine was repaired about 4 years ago, the heating element was as clean as when it was new, and it was 8 years old by then. I only replaced it this year due to problems with the door lock. With a water softener you use less washing liquid/powder, bubble bath and soap, and although the initial investment is expensive, it pays for itself in the long run - and you can take it with you when you move.
  22. I'm with Cas59 on this one. I drop the slugs and snails in a pot of cold salt water every morning - make sure there's plenty of salt else the little buggers climb back up the side!! I flush them away every couple of days and start again.
  23. I've never heard of Wagamama - am I the only one??? (Memo to self - I must get out more) Gina
  24. We used to have foxes in our garden, encouraged by the woman next door feeding them. When she moved on a new tenant moved in, and she has a BIG dog - problem solved. You have my sympathy and hope your problem is soon resolved. Gina
  25. My Uncle & Aunt, Sonny & Nell Vincent lived next door to the Heber Arms, at No. 7, from before WWII until they died, Sonny in 1972 and Nell in 1974. My Father used to take our Family to visit his brother when we lived in Herne Hill, and we walked through Townley Road to get the No. 37 bus home - how I hated that walk in the dark.
