  1. When we moved to Dulwich in 1962 there was a Cinema, where the block of flats is now in Grove Vale, between the School and the Mirash. My children used to go to the Saturday Morning pictures for 6d, yes, 6 old pence, for those who remember them.!! I now take Foster children to Surrey Quays as the parking is good there, something needing consideration maybe for people coming from outside East Dulwich? Gina
  2. I can recommend Island View Holidays at Rookley, and it's not expensive. We went there a few years ago with foster children, and we are going again with another foster child this year. It's just outside Newport, which is almost the centre of the Island, and everywhere is easy to get to. So much to see and do on the I.o.W, and all the children we have taken in the past just love it, and can't stop talking about what a great holiday the Island is. We used to stay in West Wight but that site has closed down now, but the other Island View Holiday site is next door, although that is bungalows and costs a bit more than the Rookley site. Enjoy!!!
  3. Thanks Sue. As we have a dry cellar, we're going to clear part of that and store some of the stuff down there, suitcases etc. I cleared the loft out before Christmas, and did put some of the things on the Forum, and sold a few items, but there's still a lot more to go. What doesn't sell/get given away is going to the Charity shops. The EST site was very helpful too. Yes, the British Gas Surveyor came and did a survey, but he said nothing about losing the storage space, only that the insulation would have to be blown, due to the low height of the back additon roof. I'm in Silvester Road at the Barry Road end. We did get the insulation free as we qualified on two counts - age and being British Gas customers, so I suppose I shouldn't complain. I'm going to be even more ruthless in not keeping all the stuff I planned to. The upside is that there will be less to take when we move!! That's the next step, and that will really be a pain, as we've lived here since 1970!!! Gina
  4. We had our loft insulated on Tuesday by British Gas, for free. Owing to the back additon roof of the house being very low under the eaves, they had to blow the insulation and not roll it. What we were NOT told before it was done, is that we are not now able to re-lay the boards, which are similar to hardboard but softer, as the insulation comes about 6" above the joists, so apart from the central part of the loft, which has wooden floorboards which were not lifted, that is the only bit of storage space we have left, about one third of what we had before it was done. We were told that if we lay the boards back and flatten the insulation, it would stop the air circulating and could cause condensation and rot the joists. The suggestion was that we could get some 4 x 2 timber, fix that to the joists and lay the boards on that. Does anyone have any better/cheaper/sensible suggestions please? Gina
  5. Sue - It's better to be a live coward than a dead hero in these circumstances.
  6. Still clearing the loft and have now found:- Cushions, Pillows, Blankets, Duvets, Duvet covers, sheets, pillowslips. Should I put it on the Forum for free or take it to Charity Shops? Are there any cat or dog Charities that could make use of the blankets? Gina
  7. the-e-dealer Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > The manual says check all pipes and also check > pump is working. > And have you selected Rinse - which will stop but > not complete cycle until you press a button. > >Hi the-e-dealer - There really is no filter door, pipes all O.K. and the water pumped out and it spun the clothes off, three times, as I kept re-setting it to try and get the door to unlock. I've jiggled the faceplate which is across the whole width of the bottom of the machine, but it won't budge. I'm pretty sure that this is to do with the handle, and/or possibly an electronic problem. There is always a delay from when the machine stops to when I could open the door, but I mistakenly grabbed the handle to open it before the "door locked" light hd stopped flashing. This has been a great machine, and I've only ever called the Engineer out once, when I had it insured, in almost 12 years. He had to get to the filter, and went through the back of the machine somehow. He was surprised to see that the heating element was still as it was when new, probably to do with the fact that we have a water softener, so no build up of limescale on the heater. I quite like the look of the new Hotpoint. Thanks again to everyone for your help/advice/suggestions. Gina
  8. This machine doesn't have a little door at the bottom, only a big door where I put the washing in. On the back there doesn't appear to be any screws that fit any screwdrivers I've got. Follow up:- I did put another load in last night and the same thing happened, door lock light flashing forever, so I switched off at the mains again. As before, the door released and opened later. So this morning I've put the last load on, and guess what? yes the door won't open, so it's now switched off at the mains. As the machine will be 12 years old in January, I've decided that it's time for a new one. I've only ever had 4 Hotpoint machines since 1969, and they've all lasted 10 or more years. Thanks to you all again. Gina
  9. Many thanks also to Huguenot, the-e-dealer and Annette. I couldn't get at the filter as I couldn't get into the machine anywhere. I went online and Googled the question, got through to JustAnswer and had an online conversation with Fred Bloggs, after having paid ?11.00 - worth it as cheaper than getting an Engineer out, and having to wait at least 5 days, going by my past experience when I had the machine insured. Fred Bloggs suggested using garden or strimmer wire threaded around the door handle and to pull it sideways, and when I went to find some, I passed the washing machine and tried the handle. SUCCESS !!! the door opened!!! I think having another jiggle with the handle and then leaving it switched off yet again seemed to work. So I've now got another load on and I'll make sure I don't go near it until the door lock light is out next time!!! Wishing you All a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Gina :))
  10. Hi Huguenot, The machine is a Hotpoint Ultima WMA43. Thanks. Gina
  11. Thanks ianr and SUE. Yes I've had it switched off from the mains, left if for a couple of hours then switched it on again, and the child lock has never been switched on. When the cycle is finished the little "door locked" sign flashes for about 2 minutes then stops, and I can open the door. What I STUPIDLY did today, without looking properly, was try to open the door before it had stopped flashing!!! I can't get the back off neither can the top be lifted. I've fiddled with the handle time and again, but it still won't open. I'll try the web search to see what that brings up, and I'll ring the Manufacturer in the morning if that doesn't work. The second stupid thing I did was to post this in the wrong place, so Thank You for moving it. I'll get the hang of this one day. Gina

It might override it Thanks for all your suggestions so far. It has finished the cycle, no water is left, and I've re-spun it three times now but still no luck. The handle is one which you have to pinch/squeeze together, and for a while now I've had to pull the back part away from the front after I've closed the door, and before it will start. I've pulled the back part away, it won't go anymore, but still nothing. It was such a lovely day for drying washing outside too!!! Gina
  13. Can anybody out there please advise me what to try? My front loading Hotpoint Washing Machine door won't open, and it's got wet washing in. I've also got two more loads to do. I've had problems with the handle for a couple of weeks now, but always managed to open it. Not today. I've tried switching it off at the wall but that didn't work. It just won't budge. Any other (sensible) suggestions please? Gina

    a joke

A little paper bag was feeling unwell, so he took himself off to the doctors. 'Doctor, I don't feel too good,' said the little paper bag. 'Hmm, you look OK to me,' said the Doctor, 'but I'll do a blood test and see what that shows, Come back and see me in a couple of days.' The little paper bag felt no better when he got back for the results. ‘What's wrong with me?' asked the little paper bag. 'I'm afraid you are HIV positive!' said the doctor. 'No, I can't be - I'm just a little paper bag!' Said the little paper bag. 'Have you been having unprotected sex?' asked the doctor. 'NO, I can't do things like that - I'm just a little paper bag!' 'Well have you been sharing needles with other intravenous drug users?' asked the doctor. 'NO, I can't do things like that - I'm just a little paper bag!' 'Perhaps you've been abroad recently and required a jab or a blood transfusion?' queried the doctor. 'NO, I don't have a passport - I'm just a little paper bag!' 'Well', said the doctor, 'are you in a homosexual relationship?' 'NO! I told you I can't do things like that, I'm Just a little paper bag!' 'Then there can be only one explanation.' said the doctor, SCROLL DOWN KEEP GOING This is good - wait for it .... .... .... ...... .... 'Your mother must have been a carrier'

I'm just putting the food straight into the caddy, and planned to wash it up when it's emptied. Gina

    a joke

Last night I got drunk, so drunk that when I got to the bottom of the stairs, I took off my coat, shoes, top, trousers, underwear. The lot!! I crept up very quietly, and it was only when I got to the top of the stairs, I realised I was still on the bus!!!

A man is watching golf on T.V., but he keeps switching channels to a dirty movie, featuring a couple having sex. I don't know whether to watch them or the game" he says to his wife. "For heavens sake watch them," his wife says. "You already know how to play golf!!"

    a joke

St. Peter said to God, "Hey boss, one of the hinges on the Pearly Gates has broken off". "Don't worry" said God, "Jim'll fix it".
  19. We've had three people TWICE today; told them I had loft insulation and that it was boarded, and I couldn't be bothered to clear the stuff out. He said we wouldn't have to and that it had to be of a certain thickness by 2012. Told them I didn't want it done and closed the door.
  20. Thanks Google. I saw your name and I thought I would "Google" to find out, so I just did. Lots of info. Silver
  21. We had our new blue bins delivered a couple of hours ago, but I declined in favour of another blue box, as I have cobbles in the front garden. I am also going to get a Wormery - can anybody, who has one already, tell me more about them - where to put in the garden, what sort of worms etc. G 65

Update - The two letters arrived today from Southwark Fostering, dated 25th and 31st August. Still no parcel from Canada.
  23. I've been waiting since mid July for a parcel with Family History stuff in from a distant relative in Canada, who keeps asking me if I have received it yet. Also two letters from Southwark Fostering, have not arrived, and were sent in the past two weeks. We sometimes get letters put through for nearby streets with the same house number as ours, which we either catch the Postman as he walks off, or we put them through the relevant doors. This only happens when it's not our regular Postman.
  24. Hi, I don't know what happened here with this post, but Monica wrote to James a while ago, and yesterday I replied to Monica with the latest info. on the A & F Offices in E.D.Road. Have you heard about this now James?
  25. monica Wrote: I have heard today that the Adoption & Fostering office in East Dulwich Road is to be re-furbished, then to be opened for Young Offenders. The Staff will be moved out to Cator Street, Peckham next month.
