Forget about simple zips, and use a safety pin to pin down the bit you pull on to the fabric of the bag. My nana would use this when she went on shopping trips to the markets of Manchester and she swore by it.

The best brownies include grated or pureed beetroot, which adds a velvety texture and a deep burgundy tinge.

Most famous person I've seen in ED so far....
Nero replied to stevebailey's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I saw Kate Ford - for the umpteenth time - on N'cross Road last week. This time she looked especially lovely, though the fact the last time she was 'shopping' (for 'shopping' read 'trying to find stuff that's been moved AGAIN) in CoOp on LL might account for her improved appearance. -
I am. Y'day, the two of us in my house on G'rich Road had seven pieces of LibDem literature. We had identical letters x 3 then another piece of bumph. When an eight piece dropped through the letterbox even before mid-afternoon, I asked the volunteer to take it back and report back that at least one potential LD voter was cheesed off with the amount of election-related literature. I know they're excited and going all the way, but such a lack of coordination between the national, constituency and local organisers doesn't fill me with confidence. Anyone else been bombarded similarly?

The East London Line Overground is open from today, midday-ish. Boris and Co have formally opened it a short time ago. Hopefully, in two years' time, the extension will be coming to Peckham Rye and Denmark Hill.

Dulwich Picture Gallery does art classes for adults, and someone on here has advertised cooking courses. Likewise several people offer language classes, which might be useful for when you are moving abroad. Learning to make a simple British dish or cake/biscuits etc might be of use to you when you are starting your new life overseas (presuming it is a new life and you are not going back to somewhere you know well.)

Goose Green incident ( black Polo/Golf in the road)
Nero replied to Nero's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Sorry to disappoint, but there was noone being apprehended. Don't think the rozzers bring along dogs and an ambulance and tape up the area for what you're referring to. -
I think the check-out area and the staff are better - especially a young bloke, probably in his late teens, who is very helfpful, especially to elderly shoppers. A lot of the fruit and veg is British and they have organic skimmed milk, as well as decent own-brand soups, olives, dishwasher detergent, washing powder, tonic water etc . On the whole it's cleaner and brighter and better staffed, but I know what people mean when they say they expected more. Answer - keep your hopes low, folks!

former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?
Nero replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Councillor, Foxes often rip open the flimsy blue bags that rubbish collectors leave at bins to be picked up by the vans. Could you get them to use two or three bags, or perhaps spray them with something to deter the foxes? It can't be fun for those who come to collect the bags to have to scoop all the trash up, nor is it good to look at or smell for pedestrians. Besides, it's a waste of effort. I see the ripped bags at least three times a week, along Goodrich Road for example. I am guessing it happens elsewhere in SE22 and beyond. Thanks. -
''I also wonder about illegal parking. Sometimes I wish I could take photos with number plates and report people, it really gets on my nerves how people blatantly flout the law by parking up for long periods on double yellow lines.'' The only way to stamp it out is to have wardens ticketing the illegal parkers, as well as 'educating' the shop owners about why they are getting ticketed. I'd speak to the local councillor about it and bring in the local police and ask them to intervene. It's pretty common that buses get jammed along that road, making the journey much longer and unpleasant.
-
I would make sure that deliveries are done - as much as is possible - before rush hour or after it. Right now, illegal parking on the double yellow lines means that buses get snarled up. Control officers seem to be very happy to ticket illegal parkers in other parts of Peckham and in SE22, but not on the main road (ie near the station). Making the entrance to the station bigger would be great too.

Skylon at the South Bank. It is in Southwark, so you can impress your pals with your borough's variety and elan, and it is a good restaurant with good views of the Thames. Check out the website for special offers. The service is good as are the cocktails. I would go about 12 30 - 13 00 to secure a good table by the windows. Enjoy it!

There will be a soft opening next week, it says here.

Hello Mostly I am satisfied with the services from N, E Dulwich and Peckham Rye. The trains are usually on time, they are not overcrowded (when I take them), the stations are clean enough, I feel safe and the journeys are of an acceptable duration and price. The only thing that bothers me is the trains' dirtiness, which is mainly caused by passengers leaving litter. I never hear announcements asking passengers to take their litter with them (the ones that I do hear talk about 'belongings' whioh really applies to personal effects) or to not put their feet on seats (something that you said would be brought in, but which I have yet to hear). So, how do you make me - and I suspect a fair few others who are like me, ie generally content with the service - even more pleased?

Huguenot, I only posted that to correct the previous post that stated that the fans would provide all of its power needs, and wasn't wanting to make a point. If we wanted to reduce carbon emissions the best thing would be to consume less and waste less of what we do consume. Can't see it happening, though. Anyway, I think the building is not too pretty but not too ugly either, and will act as a catalyst to revamp E and C.

Lowering high body temperature with medication - good or bad?
Nero replied to brum's topic in The Lounge
Don't rely on the advice of people - even if they are well-meaning and even medically trained - on a website like this. Go to the doctor and explain your concerns and see what s/he recommends. Low grade fever could mean you have an infection of some kind. Or it might not. See - that's an example of a non-medically trained but well meaning person giving you advice which really doesn't give you the answer you want. -
The fans will only provide a small fraction of the building's power needs, according to this industry mag.

Nick Broomfield will be on the radio this morning (and then on iPlayer) talking about his meetings with and filming of Eugene Terreblanche. Nick is one of few journalists to have had such close access to him. 0830 on DAB, MW648 or bbc.co.uk/worldservice Listen Live. iPlayer - World Today

I saw a jay in the large area of back gardens in the Goodrich/Dunstan's/ block about a week ago. I know they are not that rare but they sure beat wood pigeons. No frogs or toads, though, which is a shame.

I like buses, in general, and use them daily. My advice is to get a bus pass or Oyster pay as you go (which is capped at a daily bus pas rate if you use enough buses) and travel early/outside rush hour. Right now, part of Rye Lane near the Pulse is up, so that adds about 5-10 mins to a journey on teh 12. The 176 in the morning after 8 is packed and stops a lot. I hop on the first one and change as necessary. A good option is the 63/363 to Elephant if you live near to FH Road. N
