  1. I agree with Mick's sympathies. Some kids are academically bright. Some are even gifted. Many are not. Why push square pegs into round holes?
  2. Agree. Lots of random millage by staff around the barriers (which are sometimes left open) whilst the queues snake ever longer at the solitary ticket window that's open. Please sort Mr Station Manager!
  3. Hello councillor. One thing that bugs me and is potentially dangerous (though, on the whole, just aggravating) is riding bikes on cycles. Please don't take a laissez-faire attitude with it. I know that parents with children and the elderly, as well as those with disabilities and sight problems, can find people cycling on pavements a real pain. Please do something.
  4. The bendies are badly ventilated, stink of fuel, have limited seating, get very warm, and are an invatation to fare dodgers. The reason they get so full is that people know they can simply hop on and off, like it were a free shuttle. Normal buses, with Oyster readers at the very front on the driver's seat, will prevent that sort of behaviout. Can't wait till they are gone.

  6. Tony.London.Suburbs Louisa The very patriotic man who types stuff up and pastes it near on bus shelters and boarded up shop fronts Need I continue?
  7. I tried to email them, but my mail told me that the address is not valid.
  8. Emily Matilis is the prime example of a woman newscaster wanting to be a celebrity. She outdoes Katie Derham in her desire to be simultaneously cerebral and pap-worthy. Kate Silverton looks like Pauline Pens. Kerplunk is a little Liza Minelli in her innocence - a true innocence that still comes across as phoney. Shame. Fiona is the best of the lot.

    I miss *Bob*

I always wondered whether * (hey, we're pals - I told him all about Gapseal and he was very appreciative) was Charlie Brooker. Or someone else local and funny. Like Rod Liddle. (!)
  10. I got mine (rejoice vigorously) last week, here at Goodrich Rd, near to the school. It was the first delivery for at least eighteen months.
  11. The plums at Co-op on FH Road are delicious. They cost one pound per punnet, with roughly 8 pieces in each one. Not at all reminiscent of the dark purple, bitter plums you often get. These are British (Kent), green and dark pink with a pale flesh. They ripen easily and are sweet and not too juicy. Any more tips - post below!
  12. Do you have this problem, especially if you are near to Goodrich School? I have had the Virgin men around to try to fix it, but they say when they check the signal at the box some 20yds from my house, all is fine. The connections, box and cables are all in working order they say. Both my next-door neighbours have problems with screen freezing, so I am wondering whether this is a common problem in these parts.
  13. Why would the US want an NHS like ours? On paper it sounds good, but in practice, it's far from great. I am glad we have it, but I would prefer it to be much better, without political interference, recalcitrant nurses (yes, they exist - don't come down hard on me for not collectively worshipping 'our Angels'), aloof consultants, overworked and under-experienced GPs and ward doctors, sclerotic or overly-active management, and - this is important - a user base that sometimes does really very little to help itself. The default setting now for a large minority of Brits (and those who want to become Brits) is overweight, under-exercised, badly-nourished and borderline alcohol-misusing. In the US, it's at least equally as bad, plus there is the neurotic - though perhaps understandable - preoccupation with physical and mental ailments. How could an NHS survive over there?
  14. You know what you are doing? You are giving them the chance to come up smelling of roses. If this PR woman had any savyy (and being in her particular job, I bet she's pretty good) she'll spin it, roll it out, get some media coverage and noone in the wider world will be wiser that it all started off as a complaint against it on the EDF. It'll look like a major initiative to help the environment. Bravo!
  15. They weren't Kosovan, they were Polish Roma. They moved somewhere else, the house was revamped, and two people have moved in.
  16. Hmm. I don't want more announcements on the platform. Indeed, fewer would be better. However many there are, I would prefer them not to be in 'mash up' form. As for the constant niggling, I agree that it is not ideal. But a few months of niggling might pay off when it comes to anti-social behaviour like putting feet on seats. Believe me, I am not alone when it comes to this being very annoying. A few years ago, the default position was NOT to put feet on seats or leave papers on the floor. Now it is fast becoming so. Things can change, as we've witnessed, so there is no reason to suggest it can't change back.
  17. Is there anything you can do to stop the announcements at LB drowning each other out? I am supposing that the woman's voice is for one franchise and the man's for another. When they are playing at the same time, it is impossible to hear anything. Also, could get the TOCs to put more stickers on trains and make announcements (this would be preferable) to stop anti social behaviour, such as littering and putting feat on the chairs? The latter now seems to be the default option for a significant minority of passengers, a minority that includes everything from 'kidz' to builders to Guardian-reading office workers. It drives me mad. I do ask people to put them down but often it is met with seething malevolence.
  18. What number? It is a long road!
  19. As well as campaigning for a Tube link, why not add your weight to the campaign for a stop on the overground train? It's wonderful to speed past the back of Walworth Rd when you are usually creeping along in an overcrowded, underventilated bus. A stop near to the Green would be great.
  20. I support the extension of the 63 to the railway station. It is an uphill walk and it seems perverse that the bus should stop just three stops short. And as for KoolB saying that it doesn't take a bus an hour to get to central London from ED - it can and it does. Finally, I second taking the train from Denmark Hill or Peckham `Rye to Blackfriars, City Thameslink, Farringdon and St Pancras. Shame it does not work at weekends.
  21. It is not irresponsible journalism. The BBC reported the story and included a clip from the Soil Association boss who explained that regardless of what the study found, at least some people choose organic over normal food because of what they see as its benefits - non-use of pesticides, emphasis on quality and taste, higher regard for the environment. The story was discussed at high level at the BBC, with managers stressing that the taste angle was only one reason why those who eat organic do so. Whether or not pesticides are damaging to human health and the environment at the level they are used in non-organic farming is another argument, but the very fact that it was referred to at least demonstrates the news provider acknowledges it is an element of the discussion.
  22. I noticed the moths, too. THere are plenty of them at the top end of Goodrich, near the school, and on Dunstan's, Friern in the area. Lovely creatures. There was one trapped on the P13 (poor thing indeed!), which had all its windows shut, bar one - naturally.
  23. I would like some toads for my back garden (small but pretty greensome). I hear that even a small pond - the size of a large dinner plate - would help attract wildlife. I am near to Goodrich School and my garden is part of a big rectangle of gardens, so there must be some amphib-action nearby!
  24. Ted, Any idea how widespread this is? Is it just the poor builders at the new school, or is it builders in general around Britain? Ta.
