  1. Peckham Rose, I appreciate your efforts to get people 'on board' (Sir Alan speak) come from the heart, but they're clouded by a clipboard-crazy attitude, desperate to make everyone 'get it' just because you think it's right. It is inconceivable that a PCSO (be they were in their usual troika, which any right minded individual would consider a waste of resources) should berate a child for chalking, especially when they know that the British summer has its own anti-temporary graffiti measure in the shape of frequent showers. I have yet to see a PCSO or Community Warden get their hands dirty near the station in Peckham where people drop litter willy-nilly and shop owners blare out music and use the gutters to deposit their (animal and vegetable) rubbish, and where white van men and lorry drivers park harum-scarum on pavements and over yellow lines to the annoyance and delay of bus passengers and the safety of pedestrians. Again, a reasonable person would feel let down if a warden goes after an easy target while much more serious law infringements are taking place. I am up north on Thursday 7th, but please can you pass on my thoughts?
  2. Smile. It's a good service and they promise not to mess up your DDs and standing orders etc.
  3. Yup, a GOOD Italian (like Camerino) would be great, and I second the idea of a wood burning stove. If you do a search on here for Mon P'tit Chou, you will see a thread in which people advised the company that is going to re-do the cafe of that name. From the thread you'll see what kind of service, ethos, atmosphere people want (well, at least the people who have posted.) N
  4. I wasn't wearing my specs when I thought the optician in the Village had shut! Signs on the window of Plough Electrics (as was) say it will be a cafe and deli. Should be good. I am pleased that part of the Lane is looking up. All it needs now is for the seemingly endless work next to the William Hill to be finished and that new supermarket to open.
  5. Oh yeah, it's really bad value. Look at all those radio stations, investment in DAB and iPlayer, the outreach work, the drama, the language courses, the GCSE study aids, the world-quality production values....Really is a rip off. Why not spend your money on a Caramac six-pack, some Cresta and relax on your snooker-mogul recliner while you watch Dave TV+1?
  6. The chopsticks logo was in a commonly used Japanese font, not a Chinese one. Therefore it deserved to fail.* (*This is a joke.)
  7. *Bob*, What a perfectly charming, winsome and winning post! My fave shade is pigeon-foot pink, closely followed by school gutter-rust orange and very dark grey indeed.
  8. there were 3 PCSOs - Indeed: they are rarely seen in anything less than a threesome. Why the can't split up or be assigned in even numbers so they can at least be in twos I will never know. If anyone is a PCSO, please explain.
  9. The optician in Dulwich Village, next to that posh (read 'over-priced') dry cleaning place, has closed.
  10. Anyone see bats in the Upper East Side (ask your dad)? Would've thought there would be some around the top end of Goodrich, near to the Heights but I've never seen any. I would imagine there are bats a plenty on the Rye and in Dulwich Park, but I'd like to see some closer to home.
  11. No longer needed. Thanks.
  12. You know what? The public whines on - mostly justifiably - about venal, grasping MPs, but it rarely applies the same rigour and enthusiasm to the actual process of electing them in the first place, let alone following what they get up to. We get the leaders we deserve, they say. I'd like it if this scandal would get people more interested and involved in a positive way, and not just in a told-you-so/they're-all-at-it indignation-fest manner.
  13. I bet there are enough foreign-language speaking ED residents for you to obtain a couple of such magz a month. LanguageLearner might help (s/he has a log-in on here).
  14. A copy of Time or Newsweek is not only informative on world events but, when rolled up tightly and thrust into an attacker's eye or adam's apple, an effective weapon.
  15. Re newsagents upping the price of stamps - Adding money to the stamps is not legal! Someone tried it on with me at a shop near Aldwych and I found out that it is akin to charging ?1.10 for a pound coin etc. Trading standards take a v dim view of it, as does Royal Mail.
  16. Just thinking this after a visit to the PO at Aldwych. It beggars belief on two levels - if POs are so out of touch, why are they always so busy, and if POs are so crap, why don't the managers put more staff on to make it better? Today, there was a man 'guiding' customers to the counters, for heaven's sake!
  17. Ha! It takes TWO reportasters to scribble this rot, and a sub to come up with the head. Hilarious!
  18. Avid readers of the EDF might suggest I have an unusually low tolerance for littering, loutishness and the like, but in this case I am neutral. There's no suggestion the vans are not taxed or unroadworthy, so let him park where he wants and make a living. Vehicles that are driven poorly by anti-social drivers and that blast out music are more worthy of our ire, as are fly-tipping, dropping litter and other such uncivil behaviour.
  19. Green Goose, I, too, was fed up of those yellow and white A4 pages sheathed in plastic and that tell the public about planned developments in the area. I wrote to the man whose name often appears on the bottom of these pages and was told that he could understand my frustration that 'something would be done'. Sadly, it hasn't, so I encourage you to pull them down but only after the three week consultation period they mention has expired. Or you could send them to the person whose name appears on the sheet, with a covering letter explaining why you are doing it.
  20. Sherwick, What do you think bleating on a web page is going to do, apart from momentarily vent your anger? Write to your MP. (I have a hunch there'll be more willing than ever to help you), and copy it to the bus operator in question.
  21. You simply ask the barber to trim the hair that is causing you problems. I always ask him to trim my eyebrows - he uses a comb and the clippers. If I tried to do it myself it might not look as even.
  22. Just been on a new 40, but couldn't get on at the front and had to use the rear doors. The driver told me there was a problem with the front doors.
  23. It was part of the celebrations for the 100th anniversary of aviation within the Royal Navy. There was also a flypast of 17 helicopters from Greenwhich, down over London Bridge and then back again.
  24. Ask the driver to turn off the heating. It works.
  25. description of either the driver or the car Oh no, not the description quandary.
