  1. Really? Gosh. Are they all the same image, with different colours? BTW, when I saw it, I didn't know what it was. It had a postage/frank machine mark on it, so I thought it was some lost mail. Does Neate live near here, or was Snorky referring to someone else?
  2. It is a shame, but I think the time has past for it to be saved. Why not knock it down, flog off bits of it in an auction for charity, and use the land for some much needed housing. Generally I am all for saving old buildings, but the evidence here is that noone is that interested.
  3. Is there anyone else who is glad that the great British public is buggering up the somewhat pompous sesibilities of the SCD panel? Arlene Philips is on the box at the moment doing her very best to get the viewers to disassociate themselves from their innate sense of democracy and bollocks-to-that sensibility and instead get all purist and vote for the best dancer. Everyone knows that it's the most popular person wins, who often happens to be a fairly good dancer. Arlene comes across as prissy, bossy and ultimately humourless. I'm glad she's riled. Thoughts?
  4. I would pass it on to Tessa Jowell (TJMP on here). At least that way she's aware of a problem, even if she cannot solve it immediately. My solution is to buy a weekly pass and jump on the first one that comes and then swap. It's ?13.50 a week, I think. If you are travelling twice a day, five days a week, you'd pay ?10, so for that extra third you'd have much more flexibility.
  5. I got one. It's an image of a downcast person on a background that's nice and blue, with hefty staples on the left hand side, wrapped in thin polythene and numbered on the back. I found it at Bush House in Aldwych. It is now framed in a inexpensive Habitat frame, adorning my wall. Any ideas of how much it is worth, money wise? (I know Antiques Roadshow has already had its first million pound find, so I am realistic.)
  6. ! I am appalled. The man is in need of a stern talking to. Please can you let me know what the company says.
  7. Indeed it does, Sean. More is the pity. Venting is good, but venting followed by action is better. Action minus the venting would be best, but that does not make for a lively forum.
  8. Your daughter is special to you, but to the coppers she is A N Other. I agree the response was OTT, but she's done wrong. Accept it. Why could she not have pushed the bike, only to get on it once on the road? She'll learn that rules are made for everyone, despite what she might like to think.
  9. Dear Libra, You're obviously upset about this, so why not use your time trying to do something about it, rather than haplessly tapping out your objections here? Tell the school, track down a copper, march up and down at the junction in question with a big banner, but don't just vent to us screen-slaves. And don't use any more energy by knocking out a riposte to this. It will have no effect on me and will only act as another example of your wasted effort.
  10. I agree, MP. When I first moved here, I was really pleased with the bus system, but now I have little time for it. The drivers are often rude, careless or even downright dangerous, paying little heed to those annoying red light thingies, for example. The amount of buses has not kept up with the number of people now living here, so the 176 can get very crowded indeed. Once on them, they are likely strewn with freesheets/Lucozade bottles/chicken bones and heated to an uncomfortable level. The 12 takes an hour, sometimes, to get from Rye Lane to Camberwell Green and is abused by free-ride seekers (not OAPs). Nero
  11. My word, what a lot of passion/bile. A tot on a bike is fine. Everyone else should be on the road. Don't think you're exempt because the bus is too big, or your offspring too timid, or the roadworks too unnavigable. Just stick to the rules and ride on the road, the same way you probably adhere to all other laws, like not committing matricide, defrauding the Inland Revenue or pretending you've got a PhD when it's really just your 25 metres. Any comments gratefully received! Nero.
  12. SMUG ALERT I am a man. I have not had flu for years. I get a jab every year and wash my hands with Howard Hughes-like regularity. I haven't had more than a one-day cold for yonks. Get the jab and scrub up. You'll have much more of a chance of not getting the lurgy.
  13. Omrith is very good for food and service, but, you know, I think the layout and decor is lacking. It's a bit clinical and empty and has a cafe feeling rather than a restaurant. I still like it a lot and would go back in a shot (but I am in a Coriander vein at the moment). Bangla beer is good, though. It's nicer than Cobra.
  14. Coriander has had its second transformation. It's a good place. The food tends to be slightly drier, less oily, than most other places. And it has got good service and cold beer!
  15. And the 'changing rooms' are sub-Scum. It was awful when I used to go, but at least it was 33yds, whcih is helpful when you are tall. And it was always over-heated.
  16. And they go through red lights willy-nilly. Very dangerous.
  17. That man who played Blair and Kenneth Williams.
  18. What 50m pool? The one at D Leisure Centre is 33yds. Please explain!
  19. I contacted Tesco some time ago and it told me there was going to be no store there. One local shop owner says there will be space for four or five units there. On paper, that part of the lane could be great. The pavements are wide, the housing stock directly opposite is large and Victorian, and it's near to an improved pub and the library, which is a handsome building, even if you don't use it. Right now, it's a bit low-rent. A few trees, shops (for all those people who live up the hill from the Magdala) and maybe a cafe could do it? It's very near to the high-end Woodwarde/Eynella/Townley Rd types, who might like the idea of being able to shop nearer to home. Here's hoping.
  20. Although I live in the (*cringe alert for some*) Upper East Side, I prefer to walk to Denmark Hill or even C'well Green to get a bus. Even then, I have to brave Walworth and Elephant, but at least I miss out on the damned road works on LL and the crush around King's. The walk takes about 35 - 40 mins, but it means I don't sit on a bus thinking 'I hate sitting on a bus'. I am not sure whether the bus routes have had more buses put on them during the past few years when ED has seen a population growth, or at least a growth in the population that uses buses to get to and from work. The buses on the 12 route have very poor suspension, and rattle and shake. The vehicles used on other bendy routes don't seem to be as bad. At least the new, improved 176 vehicles don't have wooden floors, a la Mao era Shanghai trolley bus.
  21. I like PRP and Dulwich Park. At the weekends they are more busy, but I tend to use them during the week and really like them both. If pushed, I would go for Dulwich Park, because the lake is bigger.
  22. Evenin' all. I rang Tesco about nine months ago and was told that it wasn't going to be a Tesco mini-mart. Glad that there is some construction, but peeved that they've not cleared up the tagging on the front. If there were a phone number of the developers I'd've rung it.
  23. Chav, put your red/green flag down. Those people were in need of help and were a complete and utter pain in the arse. I had them jeer at me whenever I walked past in my shorts on the way to or from the gym. I've seen them acting malevolently and without regard for anyone else on buses, and seen them shouting, drinking, swearing and generally behaving very badly in their ex-home. I don't want them on the streets but if they are able to buy booze, string sentences together and understand that they are being purposely beligerent, they should at least understand that their behaviour has caused their eviction.
  24. For heaven's sake! These effing council officials. The person who decided to half paint over a highly visible and loved mural in the midst of Observerville in municipal blue, is lacking a good deal of common sense. I can do without James Barber's headmistressy proclamations! Sheesh.
  25. That sounds horrid. And that's why I wait for the green man and try to cross at a zebra. I see mums with prams and kids in tow scurrying across LL and I think 'why not just go to the crossing?'.
