  1. Hmm, this all sounds very passive-agressive. Why not send a letter to the manager of the branch, pointing out all the bad feeling the parking of his workers' cars causes and explain that scores of people are reading about it on this forum? It might just work. Nero
  2. I have no children, but the children near me at Goodrich play football and the like on the streets. It's quite quiet after a certain time, so they're safe from the traffic. I don't see any others, apart from some skater-boys on Friern Road. I agree it's good for them to go outside and play. I used to do it all the time in Stockport, where the streets had no cars. Out at 9 back at 9 in the summer, or later. Ah, cherryade, jubblies, kick the can, popping tar bubbles....Nero
  3. Really? How dull. Nero
  4. Work has begun outside Jerk Rock. I don't know what it's going to be, but they were digging up the tiling outside the shop. Nero
  5. Does anyone remember "Now get out of that"? It was a BBC show that was a bit like the Krypton Factor with a wry voice-over. I also love "Rhoda" and "Agony". Nero
  6. I am a member of Cannons, which is a 'gym' in the traditional sense of the word, in that you are going to work out, not be rehabilitated. I like the idea of the new place on LL and hope it does well. Pilates is very good for posture and backs etc. and I would recommend it to anyone who has a back problem. I might give it a go for a month or so until Xmas. Maybe I'll wean my way off Cannon's and run and exercise locally? Nero
  7. Agree with kford. I don't want a bland high street with identikit features. Yes, there are some 'posh' places on LL, but there are also 'normal' places like bookies' yards, grocery shops, chemists, card shops, fast food places, newsagents and curry houses. In fact the 'normal' stuff outweighs the chintz and high-end, I reckon. Nero
  8. I agree with Louisa about the BBC at Maida Vale. But the one in Clarm was very nice, but that was about 8 years ago. I think I was more easily impressed with the high-end poshness, all white cloth and chandeliers than I would be now, but I still liked it. Anyway, anything that helps add value/re-generate that bit of LL is good. Nero
  9. Re the cinema idea: about five years ago I got in touch with the Picture House company and told them all about E Dulwich and why I thought it would be a good place for a branch of their 'chain'. They wrote back telling me they thought it might work but there were no venues, if I remember correctly. If anyone knows the Hyde Park cinema in Leeds, then that is precisely the kind of place that would work, but I don't know where it would go in SE22. Nero
  10. The BBC will open as a takeaway in about a month's time next in the parade of shops opposite the Plough, according to the workmen there. Nero

    Northern Rock

The government will not let any bank or building society go under. It just won't, as it knows the result would be chaos. I don't have money in Northern Rock, so it is probably easier for me to be calm about it, nontheless. Nero
  12. EK, I rang Tesco when it was feared that the shop near the top of LL would be a branch. The development officer told me that that site would not be a Tesco of any kind, and that the company was not looking for anywhere in SE22. Goodness knows what the place will be. I do hope it is not a food shop or a bank or an estate agent's. Nero
  13. I'm in SE22. Nero PS I don't get the Charlie don't surf thing. Is it summat to do w' drugs? Nero

  15. Who support such avaricious sin.
  16. Walking is good for you. We are designed to walk and be active. Sitting on a slow-moving bus with a driver who doesn't understand that amber lights mean slow down and passengers you'd prefer not to be with is stressing. You might not think it is, but it all adds up. I walk as much as possible and wouldn't think twice about walking from the Upper East Side to LL and back again a few times each day. As for the road to-do, I suspect the lights are a fixed feature for a good few years, unfortuunately. (And not having a zebra x-ing means that in order to keep up my pace when running and not stop, I have to run around the electricity generator a couple of times to wait for the green man.) Nero

    Sharing broadband

Thanks. I shall ask him to stop and encrypt it. It was a cheeky request, but I though live and let live but now I think it's not on, really. Ta, all. Nero
  18. I am very ignorant about computer-related stuff, and want to know the answer to whether there are any security/legal problems about my neighbour sharing my wi-fi. It seems he can use it and I was wondering whether I should ask him not to for any reason. Nero
  19. I think they are a trend. I think the frosting thing will look dated within five years. I expect there will be some kind of Benjamin Britten vintage vibe before long that tells us that nets and chintz and 'respectability' are in. Nero
  20. All these measures are 'temporary works' funded by Thames Water, so at the end of the project the prior road layout will be reinstated. However we will take the opportunity to see if the signals provide a better solution at the junction with Forest Hill Road and if so consideration could be given to retaining them. This is the killer sentence. Please can someone print this out (I can't right now and would do if I were going to be at work for the next few weeks, but am not!) and keep it! Nero

    Tube Strike

I am SO please I don't live on Tube route, though I know that some of us on the forum have to use a mixture of transport. Buses are the new tube, cyles are the new buses and walking is the new cycling. Nero
  22. Perhaps our friend Tom the Hack might be able to look into it? Nero
