Dcd/dyslexia private assessment and support
midivydale replied to midivydale's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hey everyone and thank you for your comments, each and everyone one of them are appreciated. My son is 7 1/2 now so appear older than the cut off for things to just magically fall into place. I have found an educational psychologist that I built a good report with over the phone so we are awaiting her availability with regards to an assessment. In the meantime I?m working away with him as best as I can at home building on his strengths (verbal reasoning, IT, comprehension and maths) as well as just trying to not let him lose all hope in himself. His reading is ok, he is doing ok, there is just a pretty huge disparity between his comprehension and execution (ie comprehension vs literacy and handwriting). He can create the most wonderful stories, he just can?t writw them down😰 -
Hey, pls could anyone share recommendations for private help with assessment? We have been on the waiting list for sunshine house for 8months now. We can?t wait anymore. Anyone who has experience with SEN tutors please also PM me. We are unlikely to ever meet care plan criteria but still, this can?t go on. Finally, any experience with kind and inclusive state schools please also pm me. I mean the kind that don?t shout and humiliate dyspraxic 6yr olds or keep them in at lunch time because of their ?awful handwriting?.

Ivydale primary / Upper Nunhead schools
midivydale replied to bonnierach's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hi Bonnie, there is always a lot of movement. We are on Ivydale Road but made a choice for a school in Brockley that we thought would suit our son better. We got in after a couple of weeks on the waiting list. -
Dentist recommendation for toddler.

My son has been going to Dr Islam at the Gardens dental clinic since he was 2. He is coming up to 7 now. Whilst he has never had to have anything done to his teeth, he loves going. She is lovely and gentle and has pretty much cured my dental phobia too. -
Hit me! I?m out of ideas...

KS 1 literacy and handwriting support
midivydale replied to midivydale's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hi all, I called sunshine house earlier in the week and by luck there was an OT walk in clinic the following day. I went along without my son as requested and brought his home learning journal and a video of his pencil grip. The OT said he meets the criteria for an assessment and he is now on the waiting list. I?m so grateful. She didn?t rule out dyspraxia and said that we should keep an open mind for now. She will email his school senco and tell them not to punish him for his writing (they have done this a lot) but that they need to encourage him and praise his efforts. Isabe looked at magic link and it looks brilliant but with a young baby I?m not able to travel to north London right now. -

KS 1 literacy and handwriting support
midivydale replied to midivydale's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Thank you so so much so much valuable information. Thank you everyone! I have been wondering about dyspraxia but it does seem pretty specific. For example he has no issues with coordination what so ever. Excels in karate, boxing, dance, football etc so it is literally small handmovements that he struggles with. Soylent Green, thank you! So much for your information and reassurance. Very helpful. Do you think as a teacher that he is still able to catch up? Ie could it correct itself? Pls if you can find out what the app is called kindly let me know. I?m not from the uk so unsure about the standards and targets. In y1 he was exceeding and at expectations for everything apart from his writing he was below +. According to his teacher he has zero chance of passing ks1 sats for writing in May which made me very concerned. If he does fail (fail, the boy is 6 😰), then what happens? -
I know our school has spaces in Y5. It?s in Brockley though and not ED. Best of luck!

KS 1 literacy and handwriting support
midivydale replied to midivydale's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Thanks everyone. Interestingly I have been reading up on dysgraphia and it somehow seems to fit. I will approach School about this. Very open to use tutors. I need help to help him for sure! If anyone knows of someone who is good AND encouraging then please let me know. Any help would be much much appreciated. Will look into the magic link as well. Pls keep ideas coming, really appreciate them. -
I was wondering if any of you can can tell me where to turn for literacy support for my son who is in Y2. He struggles greatly with handwriting in particular although is doing well in all other areas of school. I just don?t know how to help him. He gets frustrated and sad and it is so hard for him. I have always felt that something isn?t quite right with his fine motor skills (he is clumsy, zips, laces, cutlery and scissors are all a challenge). I have been in regular contact and raised my concerns with every teacher he has had and the answer has always been that ?he will catch up?. Well he hasn?t, if anything the gap between him and his peers are widening and it is becoming a barrier for his learning. It is crushing as it is putting him off School when he is actually very able and bright (teachers words not mine). How do I help him? How do I find out what?s going on? I have pushed for a meeting with SENCO anD they have discarded my thoughts of dyspraxia and or dyslexia. They have finally acknowledged that there are some motor skills issues and he is enrolled on some intervention programme for this next year. What else can I do? We do lego, baking, colouring, playing instruments etc etc to build up his fine motor skills but it has made zero difference. Zero.

Giving birth at Kings/Lewisham/Guys & St Thomas's
midivydale replied to aelizabeth's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hi and congratulations! I gave birth for the second time at Kings 8 weeks ago. Again the care I received was outstanding. Yes it?s busy and the postnatal Ward isn?t great fun but from I hear I think that?s the same st both Lewisham and st Thomas. Best of luck, for me Kings was a given as if went wrong (they did first time around) I knew that the care would be great (it was). You will be fine wherever you go. x -
I would say that with the second one I really don?t sweat the small stuff. My husband and I can even laugh at the madness. Humour helps. My motto at times have been ?everyone fed and no one is dead

Hi Dom, Congratulations! I would say (and I?m terrible at this) but going with the flow is a pretty good thing. There is no book, or manual or magic trick to learn. We all just make it up as we go and try to act as we have our shit together but taking each day as it comes and go with it will help. What my husband and I would say in hindsight is: Work together, it?s easy to end up in whoever has had the worst day/night but if you both help eachother to get through then that will help. The first few weeks are full on, your life will not be like this forever. It feels like it at the time but you will get ?you? back, but it will take a while. Accept it for what it is, it will not last forever. Help your wife to eat. It may sound silly but if she is bf she will not have time for much else in the early weeks and you helping her to eat will make a huge difference to her mental well-being. I?d buy a sling or go to a sling library to rent one. A baby Bjorn bouncer and ansleepyhead has really helped me too!

Just a brief update as I have had my baby now. I had a truly amazing experience at kings and couldn?t have asked for more. I had my c section agreed without any fuss early on in the pregnancy to avoid any further anxiety and everyone was supportive and in agreement with the choice. As it happens I went into labour before my scheduled date but the section went ahead and it was calm and controlled. I had skin to skin with my Abby straight away and I was able to donate the cord blood. I breastfed straight away with no problems (no tounge tie this time, hurrah!). It was a healing experience. Sure, recovery was pretty painful but nothing and I mean nothing compared to the pain and trauma I suffered with my first. I was lucky but I went into the choice of a c section with my eyes open and for me, it was the best option.

Hey, I recently went through this as I was pregnant with my second nearly 7 years after having my first. It took me so long to contemplate doing it again. I had a debrief with a consultant midwife Charlotte Gibson at Kings and I can?t recommend her enough. My birth this time a c section was very healing experience and I have Charlotte to thank for that. I feel for you. The help is out there. Don?t do what I did and wait 7 years. Pls pm me if you want.

Infant reflux - here we go again:(
midivydale replied to midivydale's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Aw you both are still around! Thank you so much, great pointers as I had forgotten a lot of this stuff. Goddess, IF you are around I would say a def yes to holding baby and a chat but I know you are busy with your own children. What sling would you both recommend? I have booked an appointment with the sling library for Monday as I have no idea what I?m doing. Any pointers would be hugely welcomed. So nice that you guys are still out there. -
I got the 484... it was fine :)

Any of you oldies out there still? 6 2:3 years later and baby 2 is a refluxer. Cries a lot. Nights are bad. Hit me with your advice pls, how do I get through? Help!
