Threatened with knife by Goose Green (Lounged)
SeanMacGabhann replied to seanmlow's topic in The Lounge
Sean eile As a general rule of thumb, starting multiple threads about the same topic is a no-no. The Administrator has had to lock several threads recently (one of the school ones springs to mind) for the very reason. It's not because of the topic, but the fragmentation of the conversation. I didn't mean to sound like I was having a go at you specifically As for the crime/knife topic itself. Things ARE getting a bit out of control and a tone of hysteria is building. I'm not trying to belittle anyone who has suffered at the hands of muggers or threatening characters - I have been threatened several times in the last 20 years in London (not once in ED funnily enough) and my best friend was stabbed and hospitalised some time back. But that was in Ireland, in the city known as "Stab City" - Limerick. Even they seem to have some pride and try and contextualise however Limerick forum re local stabbings When everyone is running around going "what IS to be done"? it can be hard to see the wood for the trees. I think Jamma's prediction will prove correct - levels of stabbings will continue (with up and downward trends from time to time) but the current media focus will move on and there will be less focus from posters about it as well. I'm not sure what dwelling on it as a topic achieves. I haven't heard any practical suggestions, but lots of hand-wringing. I can buy the SLP if I want that -

re: 50% guff - This will only be my second year but this year I'm going for a whole week so intend to check out a lot more stuff Last time I was so genuinely enthused by the energy around me that, whilst I still recognised guff , I didn't mind it too much and just added it ot a mental list of lessons learned. Who was particularly bad btw? Choosing a Stewart Lee theme means you know your good stuff -

Nail on Head, Jamma. Although you forgot the bit about "best to start another thread - no sense in appending to existing threads" -
Happy with all of the above choices We seem to be on lap 2 of previous venues - which I'm more than happy with. But just wanted to say I'm also open to the idea of venturing slightly further afield to your Nuns Heads, Ivy Housees etc (I'd REALLY like us to go to the Montague Arms on Queens Rd.... but that's probably too far. I've been before but here is a recent review from BITE) [quote name=I went here for the first time yesterday having been "dragged" out to the wilds of southeast London for a Sunday roast by one of my best friends. All my grumbling about the fuss and buses stopped the instant I walked through the door though. The interior has to be seen to be believed. A marvellous mix of seafaring paraphernalia' date=' tools, taxidermy, and other assorted fittings made for one of the most interesting inns I?ve ever been in. London Pride, Speckled Hen, and Black Sheep were the ales on and several pints of the latter were had with a great value Sunday roast. Not really a place for vegetarians, apart from the assorted mammals adorning the walls, but there were two dishes for those who don?t eat meat. We were also regaled with some most excellent renditions of "The Wheels on the Bus", "Run Rabbit Run", and "Norwegian Wood" on a keyboard]

UFOS AND MILITARY HELICOPTERS (lounged)
SeanMacGabhann replied to christian952's topic in The Lounge
The Word. Moos: 2:29 (but I know which group I'd rather hang with) I read this yesterday, and it reminded me of recent forum schisms Mist Review Specifically [quote name=Just as scary as the initial suspense and the grotesque monsters is the response of the isolated community in the store. They divide first over class and race' date=' then on religious grounds, with the insane Mrs Carmody's faith faction seeking to make blood sacrifices to placate an angry God and the rational Drayton's secular survivors risking their lives to seek help from outside. It's an allegory of a sort that harks back to the Cold War anxieties that produced the wave of 1950s horror flicks (in this it resembles M Night Shamalayan's recent, much inferior The Happening), ] -
I've played the demo on the 360 quite a lot - it's great but I'm never going to buy it. Just because it will eat too much time up

good point CWALD - but I was never sure if you weren't just passing by at the time as I recall much persuasion on my part!

moving to Dulwich, any advice?
SeanMacGabhann replied to lorenika's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
lorenika I meant to reply earlier - this thread (follow link below) is a good example of someone who was going through a similar move. She asked for advice and has since moved - and appears to be loving it Moving to East Dulwich -

MitchK - When did anyone say we should feel sorry for criminals? Someone tried to suggest that riff-raff in half-way houses were criminals, to which someone said, not unreasonably, that less fortunate people could do with care rather than condemnation. At no point has anyone suggested that someone in a "half-way house" is DEFINITELY a criminal, I hope. I've lived next door to one for 7 years and get on fine with the people that live there -
Noone talked with Srawbs on Friday.. talked TO maybe.... ;-)

But we've all see these films.... and we (can everyone see where this is going) don't etc etc IF violence in films/games/culture plays any part it's a small and minor one.

Ms B - one of the new(ish) forumites whose posts I always read - that statement is both poignant and yet joyful at the same time. I like it...

excellent post leelogs - thanks for the update I saw Alun Cohrane on a 185 bus not that long ago - didn't know he had moved. I shall try and checkout yours and teh other previews mentioned - see you in EDinburgh as well -
Feeling 0.0005% better now I don't remember speaking to JimmyD after all his offers of drink as well. Did you make it James? I thought the Herne was quite a good venue - nice big garden space, and the conservatory was a good spot to put us indoors. As ever I never got to speak to everyone I wanted. And I don't remember making much sense to those I did. :-$ Kudos to strawbs for making it out with that throat as well. Jaws good to meet you as well newbies thin on the ground - but nice to meet you Richard (and Mrs Richard whose name I can remember but as shes not a forumite I shall omit) Good to have a chat with bob s and mrs bob s too Ahhh ... some Andrews liver salts. Excellent idea

Woman stabbed in Peckham last night (Lounged)
SeanMacGabhann replied to jumpinjourno's topic in The Lounge
"Boot Camp" maybe? I dunno.. I should stay off the serious topics this morning methinks.. -
How odd - as I was "aaaht aaaht" last night at the Herne I taped a bunch of stuff on BBC4 - part of which is Nick Cave and Shane MacGowan singing the very same song and was playing just 5 minutes ago. Spooky But otherwise - absolutely, everything you say etc. (hmmm.. I seem to recognise how inarticulate I am this morning and yet I'm unable to actually correct it)
-
that's shocking VBC! Then again, if someone had said the same about Happy Mondays I would have shrugged and probably thought "yeah, fair enough"

Im still trying to figure out quids 100 comment. Did you make it? My head hurts so bad today. . Shorts after closing time. . Why . . Why.

Hmmm. Lets sign em up and send them somewhere to get killed. Genius. Or. Sign em up and equip them with some very scary skills for when they get out. Im sure a spell in the army will help some people but its not a cure all. And if the best we as a society can do for these guys is a spell in the army i think it says more about us than it does about them
