I'm not agreeing with the strike at all, but if people are going to cherish BA for what it WAS (ie "strong brand identity", "trusted history") and the rest of it then what the cabin crew are saying (not what they are doing) is the way to maintain that But if people just want a modern, everyday airline with bog standard? everything then that's what BAs management are doing, and when it happens it will be interchangeable from any other airline so I would repeat my earlier statement that jobs apart, it's no loss to anyone really Do countries still measure some part of national worth by the health of their "national" airline? How is it national anymore? And even when it was, air travel was sufficently "wow" to see the point, but these days? anyway my point: a) If everyone is happy for BA to be just another meh carrier then everyone (the union, the workers, the media and the punters) should hush up and get on with it b) If people want some semblance of a meaningful trusted brand then what the union are saying has some merit (which doesn't give them any right to strike but it does mean their point should so easily be dismissed) But I haven't heard anything about what is been taken away from the staff themselves which justifies this action. And safety wise? Other airlines manage with a lot fewer crew so is that really an issue?

I'm not particularly fussed about it being a British Institution - it's pretty clear that it is going to end up in the same place as Ryanair/Easyjet (if it even survives at all) by management design. It can be an institution OR cheap and cheerful but not both If passengers who fly BA regularly (and I avoid them completely where possible) pay a premium for service and the management take steps to reduce that quality of service then they should be honest and say so. So the union's argument about THAT has merit - but in no way, absolutely no way, does it justify a strike such as this Comparisons with Royal Mail are invalid I think tho. There is no business case for delivering mail to some of the more remote areas in the UK but there is a strong social case. Making it a business therefore and introducing "modern" practices to mail delivery doesn't quite work. I think Mail management are destroying that particular institution, not the workers and when it's gone therw ill be nothing to match it. If BA disappears... well, apart from employees, it won't make any difference

*Bob* continuing his recent streak of being correct whilst managing to hack most people off I see...

I don't think passengers want fewer cabin crew either, but this latest wave of strikes announced yesterday is hard to fathom. I'm not flying anywhere and am not affected but of all the bone-headed, shoot-yourself-in-the-foot decsions made by a workforce....

BA to charge for choosing seats

I would imagine a relatively small percentage of bus commuters use the 78 compared to the double deckers taking people into town and richfish is right - travelling on say the 63 or 40 is like flying firstclass compared to the 78 - so I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss him When I travelled on it for 2 years I sent a number of complaints to the bus company in question and TFL - standard replies of "monitoring bus routes, demand, yadda yadda". I know many of the passengers I spoke to did the same so I wouldn't expect to see a change soon. The 42 which shares some of that route occassionally goes mad and has a double decker In the end I think it's better walking to the 40 route and going to Aldgate that way

I still don't get the third runway thing - how are environmentalists FOR the the third runway. Did I miss a memo? To destroy that community you would have to build that runway - this appears to be something the government is FOR and envionmentalist are agin. This does not mean the government has some monopoly on environmental issues. it DOES mean that ANY government finds it hard to tell people used to cheap flights it may not be eternally possible. For the record I am against the third runway but against flight taxes. I favour flight rationing

I thought I had already said that the argument about whether it's man-made or not is largely...... moot I mean, fair play if you want to take on the vast majority of scientists who say it is - I bow to your superiour intellect and library of knowledge But my point is so what? What do we do now. And throwing out whole posts which consist of "third runway" and suggesting that you are being bullied (no matter by who) suggests you are more concerned with.... the third runway and being bullied than talking about the matter at hand

so, the quote I used was just mere "questioning" was it? How much questioning do you want do do anyway? At what point will deniers say "hmmm... maybe things are moving apace" I don't mind questioning - constant questioning - but can we talk about moving in the right direction AS we question and if we find that things aren't quite so bad, then maybe we can walk backwards. But until then.. And it's not even a question of if it's "man made" or not. It is a question of "here is what is happening with climate - let's not worry about who's fault it is, what can we do about it NOW"

such lazy lazy thinking and generalising. Those Iraq war protesters were wrong too innit? If I'm wrong about climate change (along with say, most scientists) you won't find a more relieved man But if the deniers are wrong? I especially hate the deniers who take umbrage at being called "flat earthers" - like there isn't SOME similarity?

The Post Man is having a laugh! (Lounged)
SeanMacGabhann replied to Dulwich Born And Bred's topic in The Lounge
redundant and duplicate thread this maybe but about the catholic church it ain't. Plenty of threads in the Lounge and/or Drawing Room for that so stick to postmen and possible addressees (catholic or not) or move on please -
Denmark Hill gets you to Clapham High St in about 7 minutes - so you could add in travel to and from those stations I would get the 37 tho - allow about 35 mins

I@m guessing 33 is something West Ham or football related?
