  1. We use our car at the most twice a week. I also carry 3 people to evening meetings as they have mobility/sight issues which makes it harder to use buses. Also, site of meetings - some 5/10 mins away from bus route. Car is essential for me as to see my family in Sussex involves bus, train, bus and walk, to visit - 3-4 hours depending on train. Family in Kent - 2/3 buses and 25 min walk up hill. Around 2-3 hours as buses are infrequent. I have an automatic car - when I was considering Zip cars they only have manual transmission.
  2. I had a blood test last week at TJC - no notices about appointments. Was seen and in and out within 15 mins. Longest I have ever waited is 45 mins. GP requested blood tests are only done at TJC - they don not like doing them at Kings/
  3. From a health and safety angle - I imagine that this is not legal. When I was younger ( and fitter) used to take daughter to her nursery on my bike and had a specially fitted child seat on the back. I lived in Holland for 3 months and young children were frequently transported by bike. They had to be of an age that could be strapped into an appropriate child seat and also wear a helmet,
  4. Many years ago my old aunt was knocked down outside the now Sainsbury's local, by a child on a bike. Already disabled with one leg shorter than the other and wearing a surgical boot, people rushed to help her but the boy cycled off quickly . She was in pain for years afterwards. Many local people have hearing impairments and would not hear a cyclist coming up on the pavement behind them. Equally a blind or partially sighted person would not automatically move out of the way of a cyclist.
  5. Lime Bikes in Barry Road were being removed yesterday by the Lime Bike company - someone spoke to the guy who said that he was picking up around 100 a day.
  6. Nearly mowed down by female cyclist whilst crossing on Green man to Dulwich Library. Yelled at her (woman in 20/30s) but was ignored and no apologies given.
  7. Has anyone considered those residents who require carer's visits, or rely on family coming by car outside of the area to do an elderly/disabled resident's shopping or taking them to GP surgeries. My daughter drives up from Kent and always has problems parking but she expects this and allows extra time. Not all disabled people are eligible for a blue badge - I frequently take 2 people with mobility problems plus a partially sighted friend to local meetings and social events around the Dulwich area. My knowledge of CPZ s is that they cover your specific street or part of street i.e. Barry Road, but would not cover me if I had to park in Landells Road. None of the people I transport work, and are not in receipt of attendance allowance/PIP etc so would not be able to afford to contribute to parking fees etc.
  8. Need to update my food safety and hygiene certificate which I obtained many years ago. Southwark used to do a half or one day course but I cannot find anything on their website. I shall be doing some basic food preparation/cooking for a small organisation later this summer and need to have certificate. Most of the courses are on line and seem to be around £18. With so many scams/dodgy deals going on, would be grateful for recommendations.
  9. Councillors used to have their surgeries at set times in various premises throughout ED. East Dulwich Community Centre used to be one such venue, but the councillors decided in 2021/22 to stop this and hold 'street surgeries'. I believe Friern Rd was the last surgery but have yet to meet anyone who attended.
  10. Someone in Barry Road picked up some keys outside our house and posted a note to say that they had them. When hubby went to see the person, he did not recognise the keys. If you have lost keys, some time on Friday 23rd between The Plough and Etherow Street, please contact us describing the keys.
  11. Southwark many years a go, appointed community support workers who usually worked in pairs and were very visible in the area. Cannot remember why Southwark got rid of them - they were employed directly by the council.
  12. Does Clare charge by the hour or by the job in hand? Need someone to dig up loads of weeds in front garden and also clear weeds in mainly patioed back garden. Also possibly 4/6 weekly maintenance to keep down weeds.
  13. As above. As a regular attendee over the past 5 plus years at SNT meetings - the police are frequently stating that unless a crime is reported they cannot do anything. The most apparent was when a series of similar burglaries/attempted burglaries were reported both in person to the officers or via emails, it was quickly established that these followed a pattern in terms of entries/locations/times of day etc and could be linked to a known suspect. It was discovered that this known criminal had just been released from prison and was up to his previous tricks. A further arrest was made and a longer jail sentenced was passed.
  14. I attend the Dulwich Hill SNT and attendance has increased over the past couple of meetings. Meetings are held at 6.30 pm and held at Christ Church Barry Road. Next one scheduled for 6th September.
  15. Send a copy to your local SNT
  16. Received today a letter from my GP surgery dated 3rd May also stamped 3rd May Croydon, asking me re blood tests.
  17. Lancers are good quality used car dealers, I was recommended them by several friends some years ago. My daughter and her family have purchased 2 cars from them in the past 10 years. I have a Ford Focus which was around £5000 some years ago and is still going strong. Good for test driving and explaining the various ' gadgets'
  18. Christ Church Barry Road Wednesdays between 10 - 12 noon have a drop in for those aged 55 plus. Free hot drink and snack
  19. Would not consider buying like this - try Lancers in Beckenham - family have purchased several cars from them over the year.
  20. There was a speed camera installed at the top end of Barry Road near the bus stop going towards Peckham. This was several years ago but was removed for some unknown reason. I have lived in Barry Road since 1975 and there have been various campaigns by local residents to reduce speeds. Corners such as at Goodrich, Upland and Underhill were supposed to decrease speed but in effect have increased accidents as drivers coming from the side roads have to pull out so far to see on coming traffic. Have also taken part in 2 road watches with police re speeding and I know other residents near the Upland Road end have done this frequently. Humps were installed many years ago but bus drivers refused to use Barry Road as damaging vehicles and also complaints by passengers of uncomfortable journeys. Barry Road like most other roads has a 20 mph speed limit, I have frequently been overtaken by impatient drivers not willing to stick to this. Traffic and noise has increased since closure of roads re LTN, also the frequent closures of many roads due to burst pipes have seen additional traffic on Barry Road as bus routes such as 63/363 have been redirected. Council did draw up plans some time ago and displayed then in the community centre, and St Clements Hall for local consultation, but many of the proposals were rejected or found to be impractical. There was a proposal a few years ago to put a zebra crossing at the 'top end' of Barry to give a safe crossing for St Anthony's pupils but residents realised that drivers coming down from lights towards Peckham would have insufficient time to brake (even at 20mph) as crossing was just beyond the bend.
  21. I like many others, use a walking stick has I have impaired mobility with balance problems. I have to be very careful when walking on uneven surfaces. Barry Road is very narrow in some places as tree roots cut off part of the pavement which does not leave spaces for prams and wheelchairs. Some mobility scooters can only be used on pavements. If parked properly - there is very little concerns about the bikes and scooters but as everyone has stated it is the poorly parked ones that cause the problems. I have a partially sighted friend and she dreads going out on her own because of this.
  22. Yet another shout out for Niko who came round Saturday afternoon to clear badly blocked loo. Checked our high level cistern and put in new valve in ballcock, increased water volume in cistern to prevent future blockages. Working well Great guy - reasonable price, easy to get on with. Need to get him out again as we have discovered a problem with another toilet in the house,
  23. Is there a tenants and resident's association in your street/area? Volunteering - St. Christopher's shop in LL, other charity shops. Fair Trade Centre in Barry Road. Link Age need volunteers. The East Dulwich Community Centre have loads of groups meeting there also run some social events.
  24. Having been a hearing aid user for the majority of my life can give you some advice. GP can refer you to an audiologist- the referral can be either via NHS Audiology which for this area is managed by In Health who have clinics all over London. The nearest is Streatham. I have a behind the ear NHS aid for which has a loop setting, however if my aid breaks down I have to contact In Health to get an appointment for a repair. This is where it gets complicated -without a working aid I cannot use a telephone so have to rely on hearing friends/relatives to phone up to book appointments. Secondly, an appointment at Streatham may take 2- 3 weeks and I cannot be without an aid for more than 24 hours. I had to get to Kentish Town by 8 am to the only clinic with an appointment available within 48 hours. As a result of the above, I decided to purchase an aid privately to have as a 'spare/backup'. I booked an appointment at Spec Savers in Rye Lane - audiologist was there on a Sunday. I explained the reason for seeking an aid and discovered that if I had a letter from my GP they would see me as an NHS patient and issue aid accordingly. I decided to pay as my NHS aid is very good and I prefer it to a private one. The fitting of the aid was done by the audiologist at Spec Savers in Walworth Road. I decided against having a 'loop' installed in the aid as I have never found them useful. The RNID is a very useful resource - so contact them
  25. From what I gather from the Dulwich Hill team is that Mark Rowley is trying to regain confidence in the Met and this is one of the suggestions that is being tried out. At the first 'cuppa' held at Christ Church Barry Road we had about 8 people- some of us knew the team already but others were 'newbies'.
