Be aware of ‘distressed’ woman scammer
Pugwash replied to colville09's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I attended the Dulwich Hill SNT meeting today. Was hoping my friend would attend to give first hand report but she is in her eighties, so may be reluctant to go out alone. I reported the incident for her and also mentioned the Woodwarde Road one. Police will get in touch with my friend to get more details. Advice is not to let anyone in your home that you do not know. If they say they need to ring someone, offer to ring the person yourself but do not let them in. If a genuine person, they will give you a number etc. Any suspicious callers please let your SNT know - they can build up a picture of what is going on and if common to a specific area. -
Be aware of ‘distressed’ woman scammer
Pugwash replied to colville09's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Heard today of another incident - not clear if same woman. An elderly friend was in a local church when a woman sat next to her saying that she had an appointment with the minister re her grandmother who recently died. Minister did not turn up by which time, woman who was smartly dressed in her late 30s/early 40s imparted her life story. My friend went to leave and woman followed her talking on the phone allegedly to her mother in Brighton. Woman followed my friend and asked if she could go to her house for a couple of hours. Friend said that her family were waiting for her at home and she could not go in. At this point woman asked for £20, friend gave a very clear No, and woman went away. Friend took a longer route home in case woman was following her. This incident took place a day or so after the Woodwarde Road incident. Not clear if same woman. It is being reported to the Dulwich Hill SNT on Weds. -
As mentioned in another post - the next ward panel will be at 18.30 27th July 2022 in the cafe area of Christ Church. In the mean time - I was sent this message by PCSO Simon. 'Below is the link to Dulwich Hill survey would it be possible to put it on the East Dulwich Forum, as the more people fill it in the better understanding we have of the issues that concern the residents.' https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/A4ZWQ3/ If you cannot make the meeting - I urge you to complete the survey.

It sounds as though the same woman is operating in the Woodwarde Road area. Saying that she wanted to phone someone as she was diabetic and lost her medication. previous post - this should be reported to Goose Green SNT -
East Dulwich Barclays to close on December 2nd
Pugwash replied to Bic Basher's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Barclays have informed our charity that in order to change a correspondence address and a change of officer, he/she needs to go in person to our local branch. As a trustee for another organisation, it took several visits to 2 different Barclays branches with IDs in order to become signatories. For those of us who do not have a scanner in order to scan cheques - on line banking is not an option -
Southwark Council cutting back trees on Lordship Lane
Pugwash replied to rMattos's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
There is a massive oak tree in the grounds of Dulwich Plough which badly needs 'a trim', I vaguely remember it being cut back around 10 years ago. Its branches are right up against the upstairs bedroom windows and knocking against the chimney stack. -
I can now confirm that the SNT meeting at Christ Church is 18.30 27th July 2022. Will be held in the cafe area of the church. The team are also encouraging residents to discuss any concerns on July 25th 3 pm outside Goodrich Community Primary School. If you cannot make the 27th this may be an option for you. We had zoom meetings during lock down but these were poorly attended so we are now back to face to face meetings.

Travelling alone at 10-years-old
Pugwash replied to Bellenden Belle's topic in The Family Room Discussion
With many separated parents now having joint responsibility for their children and children living part of the week with each parent, these dilemmas will become more common place. I have family members who live in separate addresses to their children.Normally the 2 primary aged children would reside with Mum and attend local school (10 minute drive away no access to public transport) When staying over with Dad, it was his responsibility to get the kids to school which involved a much longer car drive, he then went off to work. Suggest you look at your son staying fewer nights or predominately weekends at his Dad's to reduce the need to make such a difficult journey. Presumably Dad will pay all transport costs !! -
Just an update - the garden is looking great. Cameron and his team are outside doing the finishing touches. We are going to get him back later in the year to do our drive.

Does anyone know of a reputable source for flat shares north of London Bridge? My granddaughter is due to start a new job in the Islington area, initially was going to flat share in London Bridge, but someone else took the room. She has done the journey from Orpington to the Medical Centre by train, underground and 30 minute walk and found that this took her just over 2 hours. Given the rail strikes etc needs to find somewhere north of the river to live. Is there a north London equivalent of the EDF?

I would be apprehensive at letting a 10 year old doing the full journey. With anticipated train strikes he/you would need to be aware of alternative transport options. East Croydon is a very busy station and trains can suddenly change platforms. I do not know where Trinity School is but is it on the tram network? You can get trams from Beckenham and Elmers End. I suggest that you do the journey with him - maybe a few dry runs during the summer holidays. Friends of my daughters went to secondary school in Croydon area and used to leave around 7 am to get train from Forest Hill, then a bus to school by 8.30 am. They did admit to my daughter who went to Sydenham Girls, that they were envious of her short journey. -
I would like to recommend Cameron Douglas who is currently replacing old patio slabs in our garden. We had a tree removed last year as it's roots made part of the path collapse. We decided to have new paving slabs and a couple of beds dug out (they were full of weeds), Cameron was recommended by an EDF reader and we are extremely happy with him. Spent an initial visit listening to what we needed, then came up with other suggestions which we had not thought of. Cameron is a conscientious worker, he also undertook all ordering of supplies, skips, etc. He works with a small team, all of whom are very polite and hard working. The job was much harder than initially thought as had to break up large areas of concrete and therefore taking a little longer to complete. His estimate was very reasonable and included materials etc. Cameron's number is 0784664 7347 He is based in West Dulwich /Gipsy Hill area. If you would like his email please contact me.

Which magazine has been campaigning for some time to keep cash transactions going. Many people use cash to do daily/weekly shopping and by using cash you can keep an eye on expenditure. The Queen's Speech also alluded to legislation to protect cash. I understand why many traders prefer cards with the shortage of banks now around to take the daily takings. There are still places around which take cash - M & S, St Christopher's Hospice shops, Fair Trade Centre , cafe at Christ Church. I try to pay cash for small purchases i.e under ?5 but card for larger amounts. I also do not do on line banking - a few people I know have been victims of one line scams. I worry that my grandchildren will not understand the concept of money as their parents pay everything by cards.

I tried a year or so ago to use my HSBC card in the ATM and this was rejected. I use either the Co Op or Post Office or Sainsbury's at DKH or LL.

Some years ago I attended a workshop on Malnutrition and Older People, and obtained very interesting information about diet, nutrition and best way to encourage people with Alzheimer's to have a nutritional diet. Hopefully, the speakers will discuss this and any information as to how technology can assist with caring for a person with Alzheimer's.

We are top end of Barry and have had post the last 3 days. -
What is a 'Driver for local area connection adapter' this message keeps coming up when I try to get into my internet. I eventually get in but it is annoying. Seems only to be a problem since Thames Water dug up the pavement to install water meter.

The East Dulwich Community Centre is on Darrell Road. Next to the Dulwich Medical Centre - entrance is in Darrell Road. Still lost? Road runs between Crystal Palace Road and Hindmans, and between Upland and Underhill Roads.
