    Quiet room...

Hey, whose hand is that?! *wonders whether there might be anything behind all these fur coats, then remembers we've done that gag...*
  3. ????, what do you mean by 'hideously white'? I don't disagree with the tenor of your post, but am not sure what that means.
  4. Oh no! A deleted Dulwichmum post is a waste of humour.
  5. I am guessing that it's named after Ady the poet - in some places it's spelled "Ady's" and he is the only famous Ady I can find, and he lived at about the right time. However, he doesn't seem to have any connection with Peckham, so as I said it is just a guess. Anyway, I like the idea of living on a road named after someone who really knew how to live! A shining light of 19th C Hungarian literature DM, that's not like you - a true lady of the demesne doesn't scorn even her humblest smallholders.

    Yeah, I hadda glass jaw.

    I LOVE.....

Steve, how very sweet of you. But Mr. Moos is trying to read what I'm writing and I shall be in all sorts of trouble now. Anyway, I still think goo rocks are a flawed idea.

    I LOVE.....

Sean, goo rocks would be most unsatisfactory. You'd sit down after a hard day's hiking, and find yourself with a big sticky bottom.
  9. Steve T, your secret is out. You are a bearded dragon. Where do you conceal your beard?
  10. One option is a nannyshare, which costs about the same as a nursery. Try www.nannyshare.co.uk - and best of luck finding a solution which works for you.

You wanna fight!? I'll give you a fight. I'll take you all on. Ghhjzzzz. *falls off sofa, whacks head on tasteless coffee table on the way down, crawls under sofa in search of dropped wine glass* I coulda bin someboddy. Ghzjjjjz.
  12. Sandperson and Sandpersona, many congratulations! Little sandperson welcome to the world, and specifically to East Dulwich, which is actually a happy and welcoming place for new parents.
  13. To pick up on BN5's thread, this is a source of a genuine (if amicable) divide in my family. My parents would regard themselves as part of the tribe of 'The English' and can't understand why concept seems a bit comic to my friends who feel that they have a great deal more in common with New Yorkers and Barcelonistas (??) than people from rural Devon or Cumbria. Sorry, somewhat off topic.

A graceful and well put post from BB.
  15. Buggie, are you reading this thread? I seem to remember we had a related conversation about boobs at the last Forum.... :) And BB, I also recall a conversation about Brendan and his manly hammer! :)) Neh heh heh We may have to rename the pub the Scandala.
  16. Happy birthday Anna! Happy birthday, Lozzyloz! (tu)(tu)(tu)(tu)(tu)(tu)(tu)(tu)(tu)(tu)
  17. And while we're on Northern expressions, 'scran' for food is a good one, and 'shining like a shitty back door on a frosty night' is top, albeit a bit puzzling!
  18. Tribalism is an interesting concept. I think many people tend to identify with a 'tribe' of sorts (loosely defined as 'people like me' (see below for what I mean by that)) and some also believe whether consciously or subconsciously that their tribe should be given preferential treatment. I'm not advocating this as a political approach! but I'd like to know whether people agree that this is often true. I think it explains a lot of behaviours in society and in politics. To take it a step further, I also believe that it's useful to explore and think about concepts like this because it helps us understand our own subconscious drivers. It's arguable that we are all instinctively drawn to prefer people whom we identify as being 'like me'. But because I'm sure we'd all agree it's not OK to act upon this sort of prejudice, I'd also put the case that to recognise your own prejudices is the only way to overcome them. OK, what do I mean by 'people like me'? It could be as woolly as people who live in a similar area to me, who do a similar sort of job, or who like doing similar things in their spare time. Because of shifts in culture I think this often means that you define yourself differently from (for example) your parents. I'd guess that for my parents' generation (I am mid-30s) it would definitely be about class and possibly about colour. I'm quite nervous about posting on this thread... here goes. Edited to replace and 'and' for an 'or'...

This thread is heading for Quiet Room levels of weirdness... I like it! I only started it 'cos I thought we needed one that was a bit more jolly than the BNP and how Godawful mothers are.

Ave, Nero, not surprised to find you on this thread. I think they are just hard to spot. Although I'm sure I read that they were becoming endangered, I was glad to hear that this is not the case.

Don't worry about it, Sandperson - lots of people use the Forum to vent and it's easy to come away thinking that everyone will loathe you the minute you step outside your door with your buggy / bicycle / Caffe Nero cup / White Stuff bag / whatever. I think it's just that the mean-spirited and openly prejudiced posts stick in the mind more than the kind, intelligent, tolerant ones, although there are just as many of the latter. Congratulations in advance to you and Mrs. Sandperson for your happy event! Great news. Moosperson
  24. Hoping for a pink slip for the 9th so I can unchicly represent the Rye - thank you for organising, Georgia! *goes off whistling* Always look on the Ryye side of life...
