  1. You've lost your marbles girl. How can I edit people's posts? If you look here you'll see it's word for word thanks to the marvels of copy & paste http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?20,952134,956241#msg-956241 You've been a bit unhinged lately, has UDT hacked your account?
  2. here you go TM http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?20,708412,page=1
  3. That's exactly the spot. Great name isn't it. Any idea what it means gaelic speakers? Some amateruish hunting around online things suggest its eomthing to do with a small head of some sort? Yep, 45 minutes to the ferry then 1.5 to 4 hours to Wales depending on time of year and boiliness of the Irish sea.
  4. Indeed it isn't, though I've only really passed through it. Are you from there? http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6220/6315330438_77c377256e_z.jpg REFLECTIONS AT YOUGHAL BRIDGE by kellymichael058, on Flickr
  5. in case anyone actually IS passing, though god knows why anyone would be.... View Larger Map
  6. Now he tells me!! ;-) Thanks, much appreciated. All visitors welcome of course if ye* are passing that way. *see, getting the hang of the lingo.
  7. Well my kiss of death continues. I decided that as I'm moving to Kilkenny I ought to support them. La Piba's cousin, knowing how effective my kiss of death can be has pleaded with me not to. I suspect he's not speaking to me any more. La Piba (good wexford girl), initially appalled at my decision, is over the moon.
  8. "Trying to have a debate with someone who rewrites what people actually write, is not for me I'm afraid, and you just make yourself look stupid El Pipe" glorious irony. And my advice wasn't pompous, I think the word you're looking for is condescending ;-P Don't worry, I'll let you have the last word, I know how much you like to.
  9. 2 takes on the old 2d scroller. Hugely dofferent but both rather lovely in their own way. Dust: An Elysian Trail, I guess if you look at this thread then it'll be familiar, but my experience so far backs up the great reviews. The Home for the PC (2 quid on steam). Sort of an 8-Bit cross between Dear Esther and Alone in the Dark, game mechanics not a challenge but I loved the way your traditional gaming expectations are turned on their head.
  10. All I know is never bet on the Purple & Gold guy.
  11. It may well have been expressed really badly but I'm afraid it only reads one way. Anything [and we are talking guns here] that tips the balance in the favour of the victim and rids society of another scummy thief [ie kills him] is blah if we were discussing weak sentences then the former inference would be stronger legislation and the latter longer prison sentences, but given the discussion arming victims of burglary to kill thieves is the only possible interpretation. Having retracted that I'm glad you don't feel that way, try choosing your words more carefully in future.
  12. "And that's why anything that tips the balance in the favour of the victim and rids society of another scummy thief is preferable to protecting the rights of a criminal to carry on without fear or risk of harm to himself." Pretty self evident that that means killing thieves is a good thing as is allowing people guns in their home. Killing an intruder is, weirdly enough extrajudicial. Sheesh. I may have extrapolated a bit but I can't see how I put words in your mouth.
  13. "but what is not clear (despite the attractive El Pibe reasoning) is that" as charming a backhanded compliment as I could ever receive, I'll take that, cheers ;) "nobody is seriously suggesting that the murder rate would have been lower if gun laws hadn't been tightened" actually that's exactly what the cited Harvard report was suggesting, ie "people don't mug people if they might be carrying a gun", reasoning attractive to aforementioned hard-ons and nobody else.
  14. True, at least Ronaldo earned it mind ;)
  15. Not quite a one liner but the build up and pay off to the final line....
  16. I think it goes without saying that noone here is championing the rights of burglars. I'm sympathetic to those that say "given a situation that turns ugly I'll use whatever means I have to hand to protect my family" I'm less sympathetic to a "I'd use a gun as a last resort" Even less so to "anyone comes in my home gets two barrels" I think those that are basically saying "give me a burglar and a gun and I'll learn 'em" are pretty loathsome But I reserve my greatest contempt for DJKQ who is saying that "we need guns to redress the balance of a society with an enlightened justice system and reintroduce extraducial killing with protection for those who commit homicide because, you know, kids and that don't respect the law, when I was a lad a clip round the lughole was enough.."
  17. Bendtner and Ronaldo in the same sentence is a bit odd. He may not be likeable (in fact quite the remove) but Ronaldo is absolutely a Hall of Fame candidate and only currently shaded by a whisker by Messi.
  18. "However, if I did, and I found myself in a situation confronting an intruder in my home at any time of the day or night, I'd shoot first and ask questions later." And tahat's why I don't want gun ownership right there in a nutshell. Plus if you actually follow that sentence with "m'lud" that's 20 years inside right there.
  19. and if you want a passing analysis on your knives control stuff I'll say that yes, when I was yong we all went through phases of carrying knives, the diference is that today there are pockets where people are actually willing to use them. Statistically in, sy london, this has increased the rate by 0.5 per 100,000. Nationally the increase is statistically negligible (0.08ish). That doesn't make the headlines any less shocking or the need for something to be done any less urgent, but this is all utterly non-sequitir in terms of the discussion. And woodrot is right, you're trotting out yet another logical fallacy.
  20. Fine, don't bother reading the UN one then. What it boils down to is you have a thing in your head saying "culture, guns have nothing to do with it" And I have one saying "If you stab someone they might die, if youshoot them they'll probably die" This apart from the moral question about other people buying your guns. US gun control laws are such that 1 in 8 gun shops are on the US mexico border, something masssively at odds with the population (1 in 400 maybe?). THe violence in Mexico, mostly with weapons bought in the US is responsible for some 12000 deaths in the last year, some 60000 since the violence really kicked off. That's double the rate of US soldiers killed in Vietnam and on a par with the Syrian civil war. Apart from being an argumenttive so and so I really can't see why you're so keen on gun deregulation, but hell, go for it and see what sort of country you live in, I'll be long gone.
  21. Of course it's not that simple. If djkq had bothered to read the UN report I linked to the major factors are in descending order war failed state rampant oraganised crime high corruption inneffective rule of law disenfranchised populace lack of gun control ineffective gun control wealth inequality violent crime per se is a whole different story. THat report and the daily mail have been barking on about how UK has the highest violent crime rate of europe and compared to USA & South Africa!! THat may well be but the UK has the lowest murder rate of all of them (bar monaco). And I can tell you where I'd rather live. Places like Norway, Finland and Switzerland with much higher gun ownership and higher murder rates but lower violent crime rates mean they're generally safer but for goodness sake don't start bringin the kids into it! So the real question is not a)"does gun increased ownership cause [insert whatever you want here]?" But b)"does gun ownership increase the likelihood that [insert whatever you want here] results in someone dying?" There cannot be a dispute that the answer is yes which is why so many interested US think tanks and lobbyists spend a fortune making sophisticated straw man arguments like the one DJKQ fell for to keep the focus on a). *edited to actually add the countries*
  22. Actually I think that's 4 questiong Q:Does wider gun ownership lead to an increase in murders involving the use of guns? Q:Does wider gun ownership lead to an increase in violent crimes involving the use of guns? Q:Does wider gun ownership lead to an increase in murders overall? Q:Does wider gun ownership lead to an increase in violent crimes overall? A:yes A:yes A:yes A:no job done
  23. 'fracking' always makes me snigger. I blame Battlestar Galactica.
  24. I think what they were saying was that ingenuity helps man to overcome obstacles and that necessity is the mother etc. There are plenty of potential and very workable solutions much more mundane than the rather bizarre ones you cite, but the continued cheap supply of fossil fuel and demand for cheap goods has meant that these technologies have been underinvested in. As we reach peak oil this will begin to change and when fossil fuels are no longer cheap this will very much come to the fore. Interestingly the two countries investing most in renewable technology are China and the US.
  25. I reckon what the lane is missing is a french restaurant serving 70s classics like prawn cocktail and angel delight.
