  1. Or maybe someone could answer a simple question?
  2. This is about the 100th time someone has tried to make the distinction between a belief in god and in religion and about the 100th time I've asked 'what's the point of the former without the latter' and I've yet to have a single answer. Not a single satisfactory answer, but a single answer. And once again ignored. Please....anyone....bueller....
  3. Not really Bob, I'm indifferent to the slightly bland understated classic cuts that la piba favours for me, but given my penchant for the more outlandish, my apparent lack of understanding of 'what works' and total inablity to grasp the concept of 'colour clash' I'm happy to accept that I end up looking less of a prat, especially given my sudden arrival at middle age and parental status. If you see someone wandering down lordhsip lane in off-white flannel trousers, luminous orange urban combat camouflage and a deer stalker, that's probably me whilst la piba is in Ireland visiting her mum ;)
  4. I went with the wee one yesterday and it's very slim pickings compared to last year :(
  5. uncanny!!
  6. La Piba dresses me. It makes her happy and I couldn't give a toss either way so everyone's a winner.
  7. By "emphasis on recycling" does it really mean "your t-shirt will last 6 weeks"?
  8. This is all well trodden stuff. I think what J and H are getting at, is what's the point in that supposition if you subtract the moral wranglings. It makes no difference to your life to believe or not to believe does it. Maybe it gives you a warm fuzzy feeling inside or something but without an accompanying moral framework or posthumous benefit then really, what's the difference?
  9. I imagine in somewhere like HoF they have other stuff to do if they're not doing that. I imagine in somewhere like Burberry they're not only dedicated shoppers, they're dedicated to specific foreign demographics. We can probably assume the cost/benefit stuff has been ironed out some time ago and that you probably are missing something Hugues ;-)
  10. It would appear that UDTwatch is the new BBWwatch
  11. my new favourite site http://www.photoshoptroll.com/ reminiscent of http://www.27bslash6.com/matthewsparty.html
  12. 1. get a server: if you have a broadband connection your ISP probably gives you a bit of webspace as part of the package, good place to learn and try stuff out. 2. find some forum software: loads of free open source stuff out there, find one where functionality fits your requirements, this runs on something called Phorum. 3. install it on your server, you'll learn lots about FTP here. That's pretty much it, buy yourself a likely domain name and you're off. You don't need web skills, but you'll certainly have administration and maintenance skills soon after you start. THe hardest bit is getting anyone to use the damn thing, see http://www.westdulwichforum.co.uk/ for details
  13. as it goes, I'm quite jealous of the shirt.
  14. I believe this look is obligatory
  15. Interesting article on US policy towards China in general, with a nice bit of Romney bashing. http://chinamatters.blogspot.co.uk/2012/08/mitt-romney-stays-in-character-on-china.html
  16. That's the least of our worries considering he'd like us to rule the world. Thinking about it England did a pretty poor job of it on its own, ceasing to be an influential power in the early fifteenth century. It's pretty easy to argue that we emerged as a world power as a result of the 'United Kingdom' project. Are we to assume Tarot would like to kickstart the end of European cooperation as a precursor to reclaiming world superpower status by invading Normandy and Aquitaine?
  17. mind you trying to parse anything out of that absurd fantasist posturing isn't easy.
  18. I think what Hugeuenot was trying to say was that tarot's implication that England subsumed it's identity because of the European project was total nonsense, not the etymology of the term itself. ie Europe meaning that thing wot is in brussels (and strasbourg and stuff) rather than the landmass 20 miles away stretching up to the Urals and the Med.
  19. I remember being shocked at my first ?2 pint. That was in about 1993, in the sticks.
  20. put him in the ring joe
  21. quite enjoyed this Fisk parody, uncannily close to his output over the last few years http://karlremarks.blogspot.co.uk/2012/08/robert-fisk-reporting-from-syria-with.html
  22. *eek, brendan's getting too close to the truth, next he'll work out Jo's English was a patsy account designed to bring in mock elections to give an impression of accountability and democracy* Quick lizards, slough skins, to the mothership!!!
  23. As long as you don't buy the latest nu-thing of anything, technology costs have plummeted in real terms over the years. 1998 budget dvd player = ?100 2012 budget dvd player = ?15 1990 budget amp = ?100 2012 budget amp = ?100 2000 entry level dslr = ?500 2012 entry level dslr = ?500
  24. I don't think a rule is needed, maybe moderators need to be a bit more alert to stuff like that naively or mistakenly starting in the lounge. Generally people would do so because they enjoy the banter and I see no reason to stop that and impose a more stringent stickly-rule culture on the forum. Maybe posters like giggirl could have reported their concerns to the team earlier and saved MsB her flounce?
  25. "Maybe if this thread had started off in the "Wanted" section things might have panned out better." I think this is rather key, each section has it's own subculture. Tangential bickering is pretty much de rigeur for the lounge, the wanted section would have been a much wiser proposition.
