  2. GIven that low self esteem is a mental health issue, I'm finding the irony amusing.
  3. Sorry Miss
  4. Naa, I agree bullshit is probably a bit harsh, even to our much maligned estate agents. "BS" would definitely sound pretenious from the mouth of a limey, I'm sure you could get away with it though GB. How about giving them a bermused look of disbelief before spluttering a soft and drawn out "cock offffffff, how much?" I find it has a much more jarring effect than it's F related cousin.
  5. Indeed RD, if it's hip to be cool, that's surely a very very bad thing.
  6. It just goes to show that the exclusivity/superiority thing is an easy trap to fall into. I've just read this review of the reissue of Ride's Going Blank Again. The line "But [Going Blank Again and Sugar's Copper Blue]'re both records that feel welcome 20 years later, because while their more famed peers have influenced hundreds of pale imitators, these more approachable records feel strangely undervalued" basically equates to they're cool because people don't know about them.

Ease yourself in gently with No More Shall We Part Once you're comfortable notch it up a gear with Abbatoir Blues/Orpheus Lyre. Then head off into the earlier stuff, Murder Ballads & The Boatman's Call and beyond if you dare
  8. I love this, A sort of Watchtower meets Dear Diedre via the uncanny valley explaining Steve Jobs' ascendancy to celestial being/stalker http://www.dmc.tv/pages/en/Where-is-Steve-Jobs/20120822-The-Hereafter-News:Steve-Jobs-where-is-he-now-Part-1.html
  9. Stuff and nonsense Utter Twaddle Balderdash Pish and Tish Or you could go more home grown, Baloney* perhaps? *is that like spam?
  10. Tosh?
  11. Fair enough tillie. I'm sorry.
  12. To 'conflates exclusivity with superiority' I need to add 'confuses subjectivity with objectivity'. UDT, Jeremy was throwing you a bone there. He was, in parlance you may struggle to understand 'being nice to you'. The traditional response to people being nice isn't usually to spit in their face, but each to their own.
  13. I'm pretty sure you can set up spam filters and the like, it might help reduce the clutter. Or just open a new one. I've a personal one and a crap one I use to register on line stuff with which will inevitably fill up with rubbish.
  14. I think UDT's definition is basically stuff he looks down on. Jeremy and KK, I don't think we're at odds here. I completely agree with what you say. I blame my original wording, very sloppy. I guess I should really have said 'pursuing music as a career'. At the very least you'd be hoping for critical success with the hope that financial success would go hand in hand. I've a load of mates who pursued it for years and got nowhere, trying to get noticed by the labels, some even getting signed but coming to nowt, not to mention a pile of CDs by bands I really liked who have sadly had to give it up as they couldn't make ends meet. It's a tough business, if I was there I guess I'd deem success as being able to pay the mortgage. A mercury would be nice though ;-)
  15. Obviously making music can be a great end in itself, but really we're talking about stuff you buy, not pub bands here*. Noone seeks a contract without aspirations of success, if they do they're either fools or dilletantes. *and even they have to make money on the night, they're not charities are they, and don't worry I'm looking forward to paying my fiver at the half moon soon!!!
  16. Badger, the fields behind Sainsbury's there are quite literally millions of blackberries there. get there either via greendale, abbotswood road or the little nature park/spinney between sainsbo's and the champion hill estate https://maps.google.co.uk/?ll=51.460202,-0.085275&spn=0.004532,0.01089&t=v&z=17
  17. "Although I do think it's a shame that so many people just listen to mainstream stuff, without exploring what else is out there." and of course the counterpoint to that is that it's a shame that people just listen to obscure stuff without exploring what else is out there ;)
  18. I can't see why anyone would get into making music without aspirations of commercial success, to do so would smack of the worst sort of pretentiousness. I mean we've all got to eat haven't we. But I'm with you about the narrow tastes most have, but then if music doesn't fizz your bunghole then I can't see any problem with having a bit of U2, some Beatles, the latest Adele and a couple of David Gray and Coldplay albums lying around. It's pleasant enough music and generally ticks most boxes. I don't really think I'm pretentious I just like to find something that surprises me, but I guess I am something of a muso and there's probably a fine line between the two, again (as with most things) depending on where one stands. ** as usual brendan said it better than I **
  19. But then I'm a know-nothing with no skills and even less self-esteem, so what would I know. Of course, nothing!!!
  20. I'm not sure what commercial music is, if it's simply successful music then only an idiot would categorically avoid it. I guess every other definition is simply a subjective way of conflating exclusivity with superiority. We all did it when we were in our teens, it's a sign of immaturity to still be doing it in ones thirties or beyond. As for what pretentious music is, that's even harder to pin down. For me it's about the motive rather than an objective quality of the music. If one likes something for reasons other than aesthetic appreciation then that MUST by definition be a sign of pretentiousness, but it seems unfair to foist that on the music itself. Although I challenge anyone to actually like Schoenberg. However commercialism = pretentiousness seems to me about as arse about face a statement as it's possible to make. Kylie or One Direction (to ignore my primary definition and slip effortlessly and misguidedly into my second one) is many things musically, but pretentious!?
  21. I like pretentious music but resent paying more than a fiver on any piece of clothing.
  22. I was going to post another bass masterclass from youtube, but sadly it has been removed. Boooo mike!!!

  24. Earlier recommendation may have already been supplanted by Roky Erickson & Okkervil River - True Love Cast Out All Evil These chaps have been a slow grower for me, but I find myself gravitating towards them more often. Here they collaborate with acid casualty and music tragedy legend Roky seguing themselves gently as a supporting cast for his own fragile take on Blues and country rock without resorting to capitalising on the backstory a la Daniel Johnson & co. Well worth a listen.
  25. I'm sure that's the (filmmakers') plan.
