  1. "Nobody will be any better off" How so? Homosexuals will not be discriminated against in law; we roll back a little more ignorance, and enlightened thought gains another minor victory. Don't forget one of our literary giants did hard labour simply for being gay not much more than a century ago!
  2. wot loz said basically. It's not exactly an issue which is worthy of a referendum given the costs and effort involved, neither is it an especially pressing issue, though I am, as a general rule, inclined to a liberal approach of let people be and the state should only limit behaviour that is harmful. I really can't see the harm in this.

Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine > The Mock Turtles The division 2 of comparisons. Doubtless the Mock Turtles actually hark from St Helens or some grim depressed ex mining town or other, I'm assuming their hit "Can You Dig It?" was a savage satirical attack on the decline of the mining industry?
  4. 'unintended consequences and disharmony' Anything less woolly than this, or is this the prologue to a rivers of gay blood soliloquy? Are we back to this sin damages the fabric of society catechism thing?
  5. I call your 'naive' and raise you 'alarmist'. What a daft thing to say. The current furore about the ordiantion of women priests, for example, has nothing to do with legislation and is entirely a matter within the Anglican Church between enlightened elements and conservative (one might even call them regressive or oppressive) elements. It isn't even open for discussion in the Catholic Church. Do you have any evidence for this outside of a Daily Mail editorial?
  6. What a ridiculous thing to say SF. The Catholic church isn't being forced to marry gay couples, they're campaining in an attempt to bring marriage conceptually back under a religious monolpoly and out of the hands of the state. Gay marriage will be performed as a civil matter, probably in a nice library or castle, but it will have the full legal recognition of the state on a par with heterosexual marriage. If they want God's blessing then perhaps there will be enlightened religious bodies out there willing to do so, but that's a matter for the sect/cult/vicar/whatever in question. Religious institutions will not be forced to conduct gay marriages. Likewise if there's an imam willing to do so (doubtful but not impossible given the lack of a religious govenring body as such within Islam) then best of luck to them and anyone they marry.
  7. You might have more luck in the what's on section or indeed in the main ED issues thread. They're an odd bunch in the lounge.

Aaaaanyway. Has London* produced better then? for the sake of tedious nitpicking shoulder-chippy argument, London can include anywhere withing the M25, and the home counties if the poor suburban sods left there and moved to london prior to forming said band in a desperate bid to escape their cultural vacuum shithole of a town.

"I can also tell you that if you took your soft southern poncey self up to Bury and told them Elbow are from Manchester, they'd punch you in the face." So much for the 'famous' friendliness of northerners! I imagine of a night out most of them would go 'who?' to be fair ;)

Really?! I realise (amazingly for the forum) that we're wandering a bit off topic, but I'm pretty sure it's not a county seeing as bits of it are comprised of bits of about six or seven other counties.

Kind of, though I don't think they managed quite the conurbation that is greater london, hence a Wiganite* is probably at least a little more justified in considering themselves different to a Buryman*, than say an dagenhamian* to a Kingstonite*, even if the distances are probably identical. Of course the latter two would have much less of a chip on their shoulder about being described as Londoners ;) *labels are pure guesswork on my part
  13. Not what I'm reading, but on a vaguely literary link, here's a response from Tolkein regarding an enquiry as to his Aryan heritage from a German publisher in 1938. Go JRR! http://www.lettersofnote.com/2012/03/i-have-no-ancestors-of-that-gifted.html

Ah, and all becomes clear. Lets think, Manchester, bound to be some more pluses that the usual ones quoted, they gave us Elbow, first album was terrific and I've liked most of their output since, though still a bit confused as to how and when they had National Treasure status bestowed upon them. Badly Drawn Boy, the Verve (ok, black mark there), I was rather partial to the Inspirals back in the day and quite liked their new stuff on Music 6 recently. A Guy Called Gerald, one of the better ones from that era/genre. Ooh, George Formby!!
  16. Wasn't that more or less the plot to Highlander? Did the book caome with lots of queen albums? Right, I'm off to get some honey and cobwebs on the off-chance...
  17. I'm glad you got to enjoy the nidge last night Jah. We've had a good few cup runs in the past, though now that we're suddenly in the dizzy heights of league one it's looking slightly less impressive than in our conference days (not long behind us, conceivably not long ahead of us as these things often go). I do hope we can bed down in League one, and try to build momentum for a stab at the championship. We've played some pretty good footie down broadhall way over the years and even seen a couple of our players in World Cups (remember the bandana clad Nigerian Efeter Sodje anyone?). Not to mention the mighty Barry Hayles, or non-league Ian Wright as he was known before being propelled, somewhat mystifyingly, into the premiership with Fulham.
  18. and one of mine from a little while back too, no photoshopping nor nuffink (actually there may have been a minor crop in the interests of composition). http://farm1.staticflickr.com/70/201687054_d1819558c0_z.jpg
  19. click 'share' beneath the video on youtube then click 'embed' and it should give you the code to copy and paste into your post.
  20. I'm loving the idea of a prescient crossing. Does it get a sense of foreboding tragedy which triggers a red stop light to oncoming traffic? Marvellous!!
  21. Hmm whole nother page, whoops
  22. Is that some sort of Bowiesque random word tableau?
  23. I thought it was all big bounce these days.
  24. Come on Boro!!!!
  25. Can't quite put my finger on what you're getting at SJ.
