to be fair, i think Mick meant financial with a small f rather than with a big one, ie lots of people and wealth, rather than there happens to be a bit full of nobs waving bits of paper around and losing other people's money. Which would make Milan, Turin and Barcelona very much qualify, see also Munich. Of course Paris is the exception that proves...etc... Given the relative size of cities London do ok, especially given that it's spreading its support over a dozen or so teams. Paris, with roughly the same metropolitan population and fewer teams is woefully inadequate by that measure. Manchester certainly punches above its weight, but then City were shit for a long time, funny what a few billion in the bank can and a nice stadium payed for by the tax payer *ahem ahem* can do.

wow. I'd love to see that, but not enough to actually try. Slowdive the latest to reform, might go to electric picnic for that.
  3. This whole thread is really just a whisker above youtube comments quality. Nothing to see here, let it lie. eda - I did like LD's sliding scale of rudeness eta - I don't know what eda means eata - although i do have a cold, maybe that would account for it

"For what was supposed to be the Greenest Ever Government it was poo." Probably the most disingenuous election posturing in history (with the possible exception of no universoty fees), given that most of the cabinet, including the environment secretary, are somewhere on a spectrum of openly hostile to the idea that we should do anything about climate change to outright climate change deninal. It was never goping to be good for green was it.
  5. I definitely give a hoot if that someone is listening to it on their phone speakers on the bus. Pass me LadyDeliah's AK please.
  6. My dedication to Louisa "Something's Rotten in the Back of Iceland" "I just want to be in the vicinity Of you and your urban concerns Gonna get away next Wednesday Gonna wash away Urban concerns ... Well there ain?t no stink like the stink you?re going to get From the age-old eel in your decommissioned fridge"
  7. Our alarm system (kess fwiw) offers us genuine peace of mind, most particularly at night. You can set it onm a home mode, so that it'll go off if there are any intrusions detected, but internal sensors won't set it off, which does let us sleep easier, especially given that we had to chase people off the property trying to steal metal the other day, and that rural places are particularly vulnerable to robberies and so on. So having an alarm that'll contact various people and authorites once set off is a god send for us city types still not sleeping due to a lack of plane noise. Probably overkill for a flat in London though.
  8. Hang on, a moment ago they were trying to stymie debate, now they're provoking response. I'm confused....
  9. yeah yeah, lmgtfy.... http://monclaroak.wordpress.com/
  10. There was a rather subtler carving done on Monclar road on the remains of the fallen monclar oak there. Does anyone have any details about who did that, i wondered if it was the same chap, but on seeing the finished goods I'm doubting that?
  11. for the emigr?s and in case people haven't seen it The blurb said "The piece, sculpted from a damaged tree, is based on the notion of unity and friendship ? feelings Morganico felt were rooted in the local area." Clearly morganico hasn't been on the edf ;-P
  12. number 20 is exactly what my (Irish) mother-in-law once told me about life in her house. I had the same mildly-panicked reaction.
  13. that keith ledgerwood theory was lifted straight out of the pages of the Neal Stephenson novel Reamde, which is how an al qaeda cell sneaks into N America. It was a great read but an utterly absurd tale. Truth, is as they say..... I'm not an amateur expert so have bobbins of an idea about what happened, but it's gruesomly fascinating isnt it.
  14. Weirdly interesting and worrisome. Poor Ukraine, as if it doesn't have enough problems Chernobyl woods not rotting, http://gizmodo.com/the-woods-around-chernobyl-arent-decaying-1545452250

Plus you can't move for the omnipresent doom bar these days, I reckon he was just making it up.

  18. totally agree. Also rather undermined by the youth of today flocking to vinyl despite growing up with mp3. Shit is just shit. Noone who grew up with Sylvester McCoy is going to say he was the best doctor ;)

  20. He'll be missed, but best of luck to the lad wherever he ends up, he really deserves it.
  21. exactly!! Me too in the waiting stakes. Prices will drop, bugs ironed out and then the good games (or finished versions of the launch gamns) will come. I will be doing it though.
  22. Hmmm, whilst I applaud any attempt to raise the bar in the digital music market I'm wondering if this is viable. http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/news/neil-young-reaches-kickstarter-target-to-fund-new-music-player-within-a-day-9187151.html Why so expensive, I get it with vinyl with the poor economies of scale and the intrinsic cost of the materials, presentation, shipping etc. But even high quality digital music is still just a buch of 1s and 0s sitting on a hard drive somewhere and shipped via the internet. Plus cd ripped to flac and output via a decent DAC will proably be indistinguishable anyway and most people who appreciate sound quality would doubtless be doing something on those lines anyway and avoiding aac or mp3 like the plague. My Bloody Valentine offered 24 bit 96k wav for 9 quid (12? as it turned out), free with cd or vinyl purchase, so again, why try to get backing by saying up front you'll be ripping people off. Anyway, good luck to him, maybe he can persuade amazon, apple et al to offer higher quality content.
