No buses on Lordship Lane going toward Forest Hill
Lowlander replied to Jennys's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Jennys Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Actually and unusually the notices on the bus > stops do mention a burst water main and that bus > stops will reopen when the work has been > completed. At 12 noon they didn't. Good that they were updated and hopefully more helpful than the TfL website. -
No buses on Lordship Lane going toward Forest Hill
Lowlander replied to Jennys's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Helpfully, TfL have nothing on their website or Twitter feed to show this. All southbound bus stops on Lordship Lane between Goose Green and Barry Road have "closed" signs on them - with no details of what is going on. Northbound is ok. -
Yes this is common practice, how they work and completely legal (morals and ethics aside). Although usually I've only seen a 10-20% increase not double! The figures show that if you are involved in an accident even when it's not your fault then you are more likely to have an accident in the near futures. So they use that to recalculate the premium. You could try and get the increase back from the other insurer, although that will be hard work. Lastly don't stay with the same insurer, I've changed every year for the past 20 using the comparison websites. I've always saved ?100 or so.

Agreed. There was a good article in the Graun recently praising some companies for their exemplary customer service (e.g. Lakeland replacing a faulty electric blanket after 5 years) https://www.theguardian.com/money/blog/2017/jan/07/key-to-good-customer-service-just-do-it-timpson Otherwise it's mostly down to increasing disposable income; back in the day people would get someone round to fix their tv, and it was relatively easy to replace the filaments in a toaster. Nowadays it's cheaper for companies just to replace the broken product rather than fix it. Whilst a ?7 kettle may last for 10 years, the likelihood of it dying within the first 2 years is quite high. And who is going to complain about a ?7 kettle?

Connecting East Dulwich to Crystal Palace
Lowlander replied to mmills's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
You can take the train from Gypsy Hill / Crystal Palace to East Dulwich, or, more frequently and a shorter journey, to Forest Hill then the bus. -

Overground from Peckham Rye to Shoreditch High Street (22 mins) then about 20 minutes walk. -
We had a tyre slashed on Upland Road last summer (and noticed at least three others on the same day). Also smashed mirrors on occasion. ?125 sounds steep? Never paid more than ?70 for a top brand (e.g. Michelin). The chap at Melbourne tyres told me he gets a load of visits including from the police - reckons there's a lot of deliberate sabotage.

Suffer-not, I'm sure you have animal's best intentions at heart here. Now there's no way I'm going to buy one of those traps, as living in ED I have no need for one. But...this is quite a misleading petition. Firstly, the trap is not indiscriminate; it uses bait to attract victims. Squirrels and Hedgehogs are not going to go for rat/stoat bait. Only the rat bait is legal and available in the UK as far as I can see. Do you have any supporting evidence that I'm not aware of?

If I can't have bottomless wine or beer, why should tee-totallers and prohibitionists have a free ride at my expense? Taking the mick. Pay for your drinks like everyone else.

The rot set in around the mid-2000s when EasyJet and all started making an impact. My last decent flight with SAS for instance in 2001 from Heathrow to Arlanda was solidly old-school - aperitifs before lunch, wine with a proper lunch; then a digestif - all this in economy. Now that the dust has settled, Easyjet come out well for everyone - if you arrive early and they have space for instance, you can board an earlier flight for free. Ryanair, whilst I have never actually flown with them, see to have toned down their anti-customer rhetoric and people speak well of them. The winners? The average customer. Apart from free drinks - which were irrelevant to non-drinkers and the majority of early morning passengers - who on earth misses the dire food they offered of late. All airports these days have an M&S / Pret and budget eateries. The main problem I can see is the fare/fee structure. I don't care what the tax/security or fuel surcharge is, I just want one ticket price and, if necessary, a simple and cheap hold luggage fee. Lastly, major airlines are real dinosaurs. BA should have gone under in 2008/2009. Pure sleight of hand that they still exist.

Just what I thought, I've seen a few like that where the floors were concrete and the council went for the cheapest option to have exposed pipework. Worth getting a plumber and/or builder round, will be possible to either re-route the piping (expensive) or to cover it (significantly cheaper). A competent plasterer/carpenter should be able to come up with a solution, maybe a few ?1000 at most? -

I have an annual rail only season ticket but no email from Southern yet :-( -
Ice is more slippery around 0 degrees (something to do with physics which I don't fully understand). Not so cold this morning. Smooth flagstone paving in particular was quite dangerous this morning. I see the roads are gritted but not the pavements! Edited to add - ice hockey article on fast and slow ice which explains more about the "slipperiness" https://www.exploratorium.edu/hockey/ice2.html

Southwark camera car parked with engine idling (as usual)

The one I saw the other day had no driver; it had been left unattended. Presumably the engine is left running to power the CCTV. -

Discussed before ad-nauseum http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?5,1500200 Not good to leave engine running, but at least it's a small petrol one, and not a large diesel used in a premium 4x4 Back to the topic, surely these days the equipment could run on batteries? -
casino/sunray avenue double glazing - council insisting on wood
Lowlander replied to sarahsouthlondon's topic in The Lounge
I wouldn't bet on no-maintenance UPVC - having spent close to ?1000 fixing and cleaning the windows in a place I bought some years ago (hinges/handles/misted units/cracked rendering on the outside). Within the industry the expected life-span is 30 years. Wood will last for 100+years. Yes, capital expenditure is more expensive but the maintenance costs are probably outweighed by the longevity. Even with UPVC the payback in terms of energy saving is about 7 years. -

The 1808 is more punctual than the 1711 (75% against 67%). The 1711 has been cancelled three times since 9 December, same as the 1808. http://www.recenttraintimes.co.uk/Home/Search?Op=Srch&Fr=London+Bridge+%28LBG%29&To=North+Dulwich+%28NDL%29&TimTyp=A&TimDay=4p&Days=Wk&TimPer=4w&dtFr=09%2F12%2F2016&dtTo=06%2F01%2F2017&ShwTim=AvAr&TOC=All&ArrSta=5&MetAvg=Mea&MetSpr=RT&MxScDu=&MxSvAg=10&MnScCt=2&MxArCl=25 -

The mornings have so far been tolerable even with only one train an hour (I get the 0830 from ED). Coming home after 1730 is a gamble, as trains get cancelled, or formed of 4 coaches and I've been unable to get on board. I've then tried to get back via Forest Hill, but on a few occasions those trains were also cancelled, giving an hour journey time back from London Bridge as I've gone to catch the 40 bus instead. Sometimes they've run an extra train at 1742, but tonight it seems there are no services between 1711 and 1808. If it's later in the evening, taking the tube down to Elephant and Castle thence a choice of buses has been another option. My work are fine about it, but then I'm relatively lucky to have a flexible environment... -

Arriva buses and 20MPH rule pass ED train station

Only to say that I see nobody driving > at 20mph The old adage: just because you don't see anyone observing 20mph doesn't mean it's completely ignored. I observe it and I know others who do; it seems we are still in the minority. Anyway, all London buses should be fitted with speed limit devices during 2017, so the OP's problem will, at least, be solved in the New Year. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-35844083 -
To the lady be-hatted driver of a white or cream coloured Mini, with a male companion, who drove out of East Dulwich Grove around 13.30 this afternoon. You accelerated fast out of East Dulwich Grove, heading south along Lordship Lane. And straight through the pedestrian crossing, which was at red, and the green man was showing. If I hadn't jumped back, along with my 3-year old son in tow, you would have hit us both. The lights had been red for at least 5 seconds, and the man green for at least 2. Please be more careful. I didn't get your reg number.

What I mean is that many people are good at managing a business and earning a high income, yet do not possess the time, expertise or inclination to manage that income in the most effective way. Conversely, many people have a low income, and manage it exceptionally well. Handelsbanken is geared towards people who are in the former group. If you find yourself considering them, that is one indication that they may be a good match.
