That's good. Although they seem to have moved them down the road a bit to East Dulwich Road junction with Peckham Rye. Anyone know what they're up to? It's causing tailbacks along East Dulwich Road (past the lights at the junction of Crystal Palace Road), as it's narrowing to one lane, and I assume anyone wanting to turn right is being cursed. And the two bus stops nearest the Rye on EDR are both closed too. I am slightly concerned, as wasn't there a fatality at this junction last time there were roadworks, as no pedestrian crossing phasing was allowed for in the lights? I am wondering if this thread should just be renamed "ED/Peckham travel and roadworks chaos thread"! On the plus side, at least Denmark Hill is back to normal, for now :))

Not sure about ordinances, although quite happy to shovel if required (and can borrow a shovel, don't have much need for one in a first floor flat!), but I'm not sure about insurance - wouldn't this be yet another excuse for the insurance companies to put our premiums up? Also, proving liability would be a nightmare. What if you're away for the weekend, it snows, you're not there to clear it (and no-one else you can contact can do it either - would certainly be the case for us), someone slips... and your insurance premiums sky rocket, or your insurer refuses to pay out as you weren't there to clear the snow and you get sued by the slipee.

Sorry to raise this again, but I noticed this morning (whilst walking up from Heaton Road from the diverted northbound bus) that Rye Lane is closed in BOTH directions for the next three weeks (6) According to the TFL website: RYE LANE, SE15: From 0700 Monday 14 February until 1600 Sunday 6 March, due to roadworks between Hanover Park and Bleinheim Grove, services are diverted in both directions. Buses are subject to severe delays. Diversion: Buses will divert via Heaton Road, Clayton Road and Consort Road in bot directions. Stops missed: Heaton Road, Peckham Rye, The Aylesham Centre However, isn't Heaton Road one way? Does anyone know where the southbound buses are going from? As an alternative, I can get off the train at Denmark Hill, but does anyone know if the bus stops near the station are still closed?

Man stabbed to death near East Dulwich station

I wonder if these kids do have a moral compass, but just that it?s so different from ours that it we can?t understand it/it?s abhorrent to us. I don?t know much about kids these days, but it strikes me that whatever the row was about, the consequences of not defending the gang was probably uppermost in the kids' minds. I don?t think that we can do anything about this sort of behaviour until we can understand what motivates it. But I?m not sure how we can get to understand it. -
Congratulations :)

Thank you - this is an appalling idea

Has your hubby asked what happens if the cash goes missing? Maybe he should discuss this with the hotel "management", even if just via email. Sounds as if it hasn't occurred to them that this might cause anxiety in their guests. Also, how long is he there for? What about paying for one week upfront in cash, see how it goes and if all seems OK, then pay a bigger amount and get a bigger discount next time? Fingers crossed that it all works out for you both!

So sad. Condolences to his family and loved ones. -
That is so incedibly bizarre - sounds like an episode out of the Twilight Zone! And sorry LadyMuck, it did make me laugh. Why are people assuming it's a tax dodge, is it just because it's cash? Maybe they're reducing costs by avoiding credit card charges. Sounds like an incredibly no frillls hotel to me. Maybe they don't get enough guests to employ fulltime staff? However, if he is going to leave cash, find out which day and what time this cleaner is showing up. Either hang around if possible to meet the cleaner or at least minimise the amount of time it's lying around.

Am not quite sure why they want it to just be left in the room - it makes no sense for him not to be able to hand it to someone, even if they have to specify that he has to do it at a particular time. If he has a problem appearing not to trust them, just tell them that he needs to hand it over and get a receipt for tax purposes. Might help save face. Or do the booking online as suggested.

Are we now a nation of tattle -tale and snitching in the workplace
Twirly replied to Ridgley's topic in The Lounge
Whilst it's important not to be whiffy, it's important that the person is told tactfully. Put yourselves in their position and think how you'd like to be told. At the sametime, the person needs to be told firmly, so they're left in no doubt what they need to do. Some people don't have a sense of smell at all, it's a condition called anosmia. And people perceive odours/degree of odour in different ways. Women, generally, have a much more sensitive sense of smell than men (though obviously not in this case) and where a man might think he's clean and fresh, a woman might disagree! And whilst the use of a deodorant is often necessary, some people are allergic. -
Congratulations on passing. By all means use the P plates - I did when I passed 4 years ago. Not sure if it made a blind bit of difference though. Used to get idiots doing stupid things even when I had L plates on. It'll probably just make the already considerate drivers all the more considerate. I remember being really nervous when I first started driving on my own, particularly on the motorway (do they cover motorway driving yet?). Despite being a somewhat more mature learner driver, I still had my Dad come with me on the motorway for the first couple of trips! I highly recommend you get someone to go with you - 40 was the most I'd ever done up to the test, so 70 felt really scary, never mind merging with traffic that was doing 70+, and he gave me tips on how to deal with things (such as trying to be in the middle lane when approacing a slip road if possible to allow merging traffic in from the slip road). If you've got no-one to do this with you, then maybe consider doing the pass plus scheme (I intended to, but didn't feel I needed it in the end). Have fun!

Have you been to the CAB yet? You certainly need to, particularly with regard to the rent issue.

And now they've decided to dig up the road and close bus stops up by Denmark Hill again, which I've been going to in order to avoid Peckham. And not just the two stops near the station, but tonight I walked to the one outside the George Canning to find that one was closed and then along to the next one... arrgghh!

Anyone know how long it would take to cycle to Camden? Mr Twirly keeps muttering about getting a bike, but not sure how long it would take him to get to work from East Dulwich Road.

Embo, you clearly took the test too long ago and missed the now compulsory "psychic skills" part of the test. Did you not know that you are supposed to be able to tell where every single driver is intending to go, even if they don't actually know themsevles? ;-)

Thanks James, that's really good.

It really depends on exactly where you live and where you've got to get to work. I live in a road off East Dulwich Road and when I worked near Moorgate it too about 50-60 minutes, going via London Bridge, now I'm near City Thameslink it's about 40 minutes (or even less on a good day). If the trains/buses are bad, it can take 90 minutes of course.

Who said that? If Alleyns wants the service in their term time only (and presumably someone must have requested the service from the council and given the dates of the Alleyns term for these people to be employed at these times only), then they should pay for it. If the council is providing it in the catchment area of a state school, then it should cover all children whatever the term. I am amazed that it doesn?t, and that someone somewhere has taken a decision that it shouldn?t ? and it?s that which I object to. Champers has put it best.

It strikes me that you have two issues here. One is the legal aspects of a) how to get them out and b) the bailiffs. But you also have the psychological issue of how to handle the partner to ensure that he doesn't get violent, and sadly, it doesn't matter if your daughter has the law on her side if he loses his temper, though obviously it will give her confidence. So definitely consult the CAB/a solicitor. Is there anyone who can go and stay with her during the notice period? This is for two reasons, one is his temper, but also if they have financial problems, you don't want stuff going missing. He may be less likely to kick off if there is a witness, and she may feel more comfortable having back up. And be prepared to change the locks when they've gone, just in case. Best of luck in getting this resolved amicably.

Why do you even have to ask this question?! If it's funded by the council, then of course they should automatically be providing cover for the state school terms. If Alleyns wants this service, then it should be paying for it. I don't have kids, but I think that's an abuse of public funds.
