The 'General ED' section of the forum is designed to be a useful resource for the people in the local area to discuss the latest topics specific to East Dulwich. This topic (regarding Turney Road closure) was a reasonable candidate to be in this section because: It is new information The road closure probably affects some ED residents (the road closure is in SE21, but its few 100m away from SE22, so would still affect nearby roads). The reason for the LTN Discussion topic being moved to the Lounge is not a conspiracy - its because its a long running, general topic which ended up up being filled with information not relevant to the area. Furthermore, a massive 2,200 reply topic is pretty inaccessible for anyone new to the forum, so it ends up just being a back and forth between a few forum members who are passionate about the subject. In general, I'd prefer the General ED forum to contain shorter lived, focused topics about breaking news, rather than seeing the LTN Behemoth topic constantly resurfacing to the top being bumped by a handful of contributors. The Lounge is still one of the most viewed sections of the website, so its not like all LTN stuff is being suppressed. The people who care enough about LTNs will find and contribute to it (the EDF topic is on the first page of Google for the term 'LTN Discussion'!). If in the future there's any significant breaking news which directly relates to an East Dulwich LTN, then of course it might be deserving of a new topic in General ED. So hopefully that explains my point of view.

FYI I've made the decision to Lounge this mammoth LTN topic. I would prefer to keep the General ED Issues / Gossip content fresh, with issues related to the local area. Stuff that people would have a quick read of in the mornings, rather than a 87 page behemoth 😅 The LTN topic (and even its predecessor) has had the tendency over the years to veer of into a more political and London wide discussion about LTNs. Not surprising given the subject. Going forward, if anyone has fresh news/updates/decisions from Southwark Council about an LTN which would affect local residents, or wants to share opinions about a specific LTN in ED, then feel free to create a new topic about it in the General ED Issues / Gossip board. Otherwise, feel free to continue here without my interference 🙃

For the old posts made prior to the upgrade, these won't have the quote details (this was unfortunately not possible to migrate) However new posts will have the name and date of the quoted post. I've quoted you to give you an example.
-
@ianr if you click the last reply time to the right of the post title, it will take you to the last comment. I've attached a screenshot below for what it looks like on mobile. If you're using desktop there is a similar 'last reply time' on the left but it looks slightly different Mobile

Just an update r.e. private messages. Messages sent between 3rd-9th April 2023 went missing in the migration, for a reason I haven't yet figured out. However, they are not lost and still retrievable. If anyone is missing a message in their inbox between 3rd-9th April which they need to see, please send a message to me using the "Contact Us" link (see bottom of the page) and I will give you further instructions.

Current issues under investigation: A user has reported some of their newest private messages have gone missing. I am investigating. The preview images in the For Sale and Family Room Classifieds board are currently missing. They are being generated and will be ready by the end of today.

Hi all, As mentioned last month, I have been working on migrating East Dulwich Forum to some new forum software. This has happened overnight on 10th April 2023. As with all software, please allow some time for any problem to be ironed out! There is still some work being done in the background to convert all of the content to the new format. This should be fully complete by the end of today. There are many new features to the website which I will go over in due course over the next day or two, however a quick overview of the main ones: New Logo The forum has some new branding: for the first time in its history, a logo. The design is inspired from Southwark borough road signs. Classifieds Changes The For Sale and Family Room Classifieds boards have a new layout which includes preview images. On a desktop/laptop, if you hover over the image with your cursor you can see a larger version of the image. NOTE : The preview images are currently not displaying. They will start showing later today on 10-Apr-2023. A highly requested feature - You will notice a new 'End Listing' button which allows you to automatically close the topic when the item is no longer available, meaning nobody will be able to reply to it. It will also add a marker to the title to make it obvious its no longer available. New Post Editor When you create a new topic or reply to post, the "editor box" where you enter the message should now be easier to use. It will be familiar to anyone who has used Microsoft Word or a similar word processor. You can format text (e.g. bold) it with a click of a button and it gives you a 'live preview' of the formatting. New Private Messaging System The messaging system in the new forum software is far less 'clunky', especially when you are viewing the forum on phone. Sending someone a message is now similar to a chat client. Hopefully people will find this easier to use. Events Calendar This is a new Events page which allows any to submit, view and comment on upcoming events in the local area. This will be similar to the 'Whats on in East Dulwich' board, however the big difference is that you will be able to see a clear date, time, venue and overview of all events, organised in chronological order on one page. The calendar is currently empty, however over the coming months I will encourage people to start adding events to it. Eventually it will replace the 'Whats on in East Dulwich' board once people get used to it.

Oh god, PLEASE don't turn this into another wildly off topic sociological debate in the ED issues board! Keep the discussion relevant to the topic - i.e. related to our new Poundland Local People have different views about society and nobody's opinion is going to change from this thread. I hate deleting posts in a public forum and I have not done so yet in this thread, but I will do if it keeps going off topic.
-
Hi Sue, I have just reopened it so feel free to add these updates in there now: /viewtopic.php?t=2295578
-
The discussion has gone completely off-topic and has become a complete minefield to moderate. I have split the thread at the point where it started to go off-topic. UPDATE: I've now reopened the thread, but I will be moderating and removing any posts which go off-topic. Please keep all political and sociological discussion to the News, Politics & Current Affairs board.

Dog walker kicked dog on Champion Hill
Administrator replied to arj's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I have removed the photos in the original post. While it is not against the law to share photos of persons in a public place, it would be better in this case not to have them on the forum. To OP: If your intention for this topic is to find the owners of the dogs, you are welcome to re-post the images of the dogs only, to help with identification If your are alleging that an offence has taken place, especially if you have further video evidence of this, it is best to contact the RSPCA or police. Keeping the photos of the alleged offender on here won't help the investigation. -
You can either: - click the green tick icon on the left, which takes you to the latest unread post, since you last clicked into the thread - or there's an arrow button which will always take you to the last post Works on mobile and desktop/laptop/tablet versions of the forum.

Thanks for reporting. I've just made some changes and disabled some plugins which could be causing the cookies to be reset. Let me know if its any better after today. If not, I'll try some more things.
-
Thanks for the update Sue. To be honest its a bit of a mystery to what caused this. It seems like some people's cookies were being reset to a 'guest' user. But the issue wasn't consistently reproducible for me, so its very difficult for me to investigate :( Please let me know if it does happen again. It if does I will raise a support request on the phpBB community forums.

Sorry to hear of your situation. The last two replies to your post have good advice which I agree with. How did you find the builder out of interest? If you want, send me a private message with the builder's name (click 'Send private message' to the left of this message). I'll able to check if they've been mentioned in the forum in the past. I can potentially add them to our blacklist so they cannot be recommended here the future.

For full disclosure, this was the topic where ken78's comments were deleted: /viewtopic.php?t=2288796 The seller is trying to sell a professional knife sharpening machine. The seller even posted links to other places where the same device sells for full retail price. Its a totally legitimate listing. ken78's deleted posts were along the lines of 'this tool isn't needed / too expensive'. There is absolutely no need to make comments like this. The seller has every right to sell items like this on the forum without someone else completely uninvolved in the sale making negative comments about it. If someone is selling an item in bad faith, then you are welcome to report the post, but in this case there is absolutely nothing wrong with the listing. There is no specific forum rule saying 'you can't discuss or post negative comments about other people's listings when you have no involvement with it', but it common courtesy that you shouldn't do this. The rule list would be far too long if we had to clarify every single scenario of what is respectful and what isn't.
-
Someone was selling a professional knife sharpener in the For Sale board and you were trying to jeopardise their sale by posting that it wasn't needed / too expensive / etc. Hence these being removed. Not the first time you've tried to do this either. The for sale board isn't a place to have a chat and criticise people's items for sale. That's incredibly poor etiquette.

There used to be a "ED businesses, restaurants & trades" section, although over time >80% of the topics in there ended up being trades related requests/recommendations, so to give it a clearer purpose, a few months ago it was renamed to Tradespeople & Service Requests. Most of the ED restaurant/pub/shop related topics ended up going in the General ED Issues / Gossip board anyway, which I think is the best place for them. The description of that board on the old forum suggested they should be discussed there (see screenshot below), which was a little contradictory If there is enough demand, a new dedicated ED restaurant/pub/shops board could be added.

Hi, The green tick means there are unread posts in that topic. Grey means everything has been read. Similar to an email inbox. You can delete your own topics and replies for 30 minutes after you've made them. After this time, you can still edit the post using the pencil icon just above the post text. If you have listed something for sale which is now sold or unavailable, you can edit the title of your post message and add 'SOLD' or simply remove the text.
