There's another strange bit of psychology to the self employment / tax thing - for me, anyway. If you do a PAYE job, you do 'the job' and get 'your salary' - a years work for your years pay and probably don't think too much about it. If you're self-employed, however - and do jobs one by one, you reach the point where the jobs you do later in the year suddenly 'pay' (once you take the tax into consideration) not that much more than half as much as the ones you did at the start did - which - for me - leads to motivation issues. So I suppose I'm both greedy and lazy - and both balance the other one out.
