  1. I completely disagree with your point no 4, RosieH. I usually do my food shopping in M&S or Waitrose in Bromley or Beckenham. If there was a decent supermarket in Lordship Lane I would shop there on a regular basis, rather than travel so far. If I did my main food shopping in LL, then I would also use the clothes and gift shops nearby far more often, rather than the shops in the Glades etc. A new M&S certainly wouldn't make me use the butcher, but I would be far more inclined to go across the road to shops such as SMBS; I very rarely go there at the moment because while they sell a wonderful range of foods, I can make do with other products from Waitrose etc which might not be quite as good, rather than have the inconvenience of shopping in Bromley/Beckenham AND LL. I would also be more likely to get a takeaway from one of the Indian or Chinese restaurants in LL when I did my shopping, rather than phone for a home delivery from a takeaway in Forest Hill.
  2. I would really welcome a branch of M&S in Lordship Lane. I can count the number of times I've shopped in LL this year on the fingers of one hand; I prefer to get all my food shopping in one trip, but don't like the Co-op or Iceland. If there was an M&S, then I would be likely to shop there regularly rather than drive to Beckenham, and would also be far more likely to use the other local shops.
  3. The only mobile phone network which has any signal inside my house in my part of Wood Vale is Orange/T-Mobile, and even that isn't great. People can sometimes get a signal on O2 if they stand at the end of my driveway, but there is never a Vodaphone or 3 signal in my front or back gardens.
  4. I live in Wood Vale, but really don't see the point of starting a Facebook group? If there are any concerns about the immediate area, surely this forum is a small enough community in which to raise them?
  5. I watched Sesame Street each day with my daughter from a very early age, and she had very basic books, which helped her to know all her letters by the time she was 2. When she was about three and a half, I started buying the Ladybird Peter and Jane books (the successors to Janet and John) and we gradually moved up through the series. I found the structured approach really good, and my daughter was reading fluently long before she started school.
  6. Is it really necessary to bump 8 old threads to post the same advert for your business?

I'm really surprised to hear this about Forest Hill Road practice. I developed a serious health problem in November, and the practice has been absolutely brilliant with appointments. I've needed to see a doctor at very short notice four or five times since then, and every time I've been seen within a couple of hours. I;ve been so impressed by the way in which the reception staff have treated me, particularly the young man, who is so kind.
  8. I was gobsmacked when I first read the comment about grandparents blowing their savings on cruises, but then I assumed that it must have been a joke. My mother is almost 85 and in remarkable health, and I always encourage her to spend her money on anything that will make her remaining years more enjoyable. I love to see her enjoying herself going on lovely holidays, and the pleasure she gets from her new car. My parents worked hard to give my brother and I a happy and comfortable childhood and I can see no reason why I should have expected any financial support to continue once I had left home and started my own family. I hope my mother spends and enjoys every penny she has. I'm also a bit surprised by the attitude towards the ruby wedding celebrations, although I can understand that some people might be irritated about the present issue. If I had a relative or friend who had reached such a milestone in their marriage, I would feel privileged to be invited to share their celebrations with them, and would not expect them to organise their celebration around my children's sleep patterns! It sounds as though some people have very inflexible routines where their children are concerned.
  9. I found Kumon maths was wonderful for my daughter. She started Kumon when she was in Year 2; it was clear that she was very talented in maths, but was not being stretched at all at school, and was getting very bored with the level of work that she was being given. She loved Kumon maths, the speed with which she could move through the levels, and the reward system. My daughter stopped Kumon when she started secondary school, and just didn't have time to get to classes after her long journey from school, but by that time, she was working at several years above her age expected level. She was offered the maximum scholarship to several public schools, and was offered places at state selective schools in Bromley and Wandsworth, and we were all firmly convinced that this was due in part to the way in which her maths ability had been developed by the Kumon system. If the Kumon method is taken seriously, it can have huge benefits, but unless parents and children are prepared to commit to completing the work set every day without fail (and that includes holidays, Christmas Day etc) there is little point to starting it.
  10. I'm afraid I'm in the supposed minority who find the name extremely off-putting, and would definitely not want to be involved with a group with a daft name like this. I think it is extremely patronising, and typically 'East Dulwich'.
  11. We had our flu vaccinations at Perfucare in Kirkdale; they charge ?10 each. But I don't think any pharmacy will usually give flu vaccine to anyone under 16.
  12. Even nowadays children still get bullied for having unusual or strange names, so I think it's really important to bear that in mind. When we chose names for our daughter we were also very careful to avoid names with initials which could spell a word - I was teased regularly as a child for the word that my initials spelt out.
  13. Fairlawn is a brilliant school in every way, and I don't believe you would find a much better school anywhere. Fairlawn is one of the most oversubscribed schools in Lewisham, and you would need to live very close to have a chance of getting a place. My experience of Horniman was awful - it had very poor standards of discipline and low expectations. Their Key Stage 2 results have fallen quite sharply.
  14. Blimey! You must have good eyesight if you could distinguish the notes from the other side of the road! I would have been lucky to have seen the wallet from that distance! Are you sure the old lady didn't make off with a few fifties as well? 15. I would put Dulwich Hamlet as by far the best local state junior school in Dulwich, with Dulwich Village as the best infant school if you qualify on the faith criterion. Although it's just over the border in Forest Hill, I would rate Fairlawn as a close second, followed by Eliot Bank.
  16. Can anyone help me please? I am trying to find a parcel which was apparently signed for by someone by the name of Finch in Wood Vale on Monday morning. I don't know if the parcel was addressed wrongly, or if Parcelforce or the Post Office asked someone else to sign for it when I was out and didn't leave me a card. I've asked my immediate neighbours but it hasn't been delivered to them. If Mr or Ms Finch reads this, or anyone who knows them, please please can you PM me as I'm desperate for my parcel!!
  17. I had a Sangenic many years ago when my daughter was a baby, and it was one of the best pieces of equipment I invested in. I used it constantly while she was in nappies.
  18. It was a few years ago now, but I had my daughter in Mayday, and I really couldn't praise every aspect of my experience highly enough. I had a difficult pregnancy and birth, and every member of staff from the first ante natal appointment until I was discharged with my baby was excellent. But apart from their skill and professionalism, I was treated with the sort of respect and kindness that I didn't think you still found in hospitals, and which none of my friends who had given birth in Kings had experienced.
  19. We live on Wood Vale and my daughter went to the Hamlet, but I think we were lucky to get a place from so far away, and that was a few years ago, before there was the current pressure on primary school places. Don't forget that, because of the different entry criteria, the Infant School tends to take children from a wider area than the Hamlet, so your daughter's friends won't necessarily be offered a place at the Junior School if they aren't very local.
  20. Whatever the truth of all this, I was surprised to read in the Mail article that Mr Moyle has apparently been suspended from the Governing Body. If he is an elected parent governor (rather than appointed), there are no powers to remove or suspend him for something like this.
  21. I would love to see a Waitrose or M&S in Lordship Lane. I very rarely do my food shopping in East Dulwich because I loathe the LL branch of the Co-op and try hard to avoid all branches of Sainsburys. Because I do my supermarket shopping elsewhere, I also use the other shops close to the supermarkets I use, rather than East Dulwich shops, because it is more convenient for me to do all my shopping in one location.
  22. I can't think of anything that would have made me leave my daughter for four days at that age. I wouldn't have had a minute's peace. I also could never have left her with a stranger for any length of time, so I wouldn't have had any hesitation in staying at home with her.
  23. I work with a number of Lewisham schools and I don't believe that you will find a better school in the area than Fairlawn. I wouldn't hesitate in accepting the place.
