  3. Home school competition to explore Black British History Patrick Vernon OBE London, ENG, United Kingdom 16 May 2020 ? In the light of the COVID-19 crisis and with schools closed until further notice, we are launching a new ?home school? competition for children and young people, to explore Black British History and multicultural Britain. The competition, sponsored by The National Education Union (NEU), the largest education union in Europe, is part of the special launch of the 100 Great Black Britons campaign created by Patrick Vernon OBE to celebrate the continued legacy and achievements of Black people in Britain. The competition is open to all age groups. Children and young people are asked to create a fun and unique project celebrating Black Britons and their legacy. There is also a special teacher's competition to develop resources that can be shared as part of a permanent online teaching resource celebrating Black history. ?The current crisis has highlighted the centrality of Black people in Britain, to the NHS and care work, transport systems, food supplies, utilities, research, education and so much more. The NEU supports this competition to celebrate what we have always known that Britain?s history is irrefutably rooted in Black and global history and that our members do a fantastic job in teaching this. It will be a fabulous opportunity to showcase some of their work and that of their pupils?. Kevin Courtney, NEU Joint General Secretary ?Black history in Britain goes as far back as it?s possible to go. Children growing up in modern Britain should know their true history, and whether they are Black, brown or white, Black history is part our of national story. Their resources on the 100 Great Black Britons site can be used by families, parents, guardians and carers to help children understand themselves and their wider history. This is central to Black Cultural Archives? purpose, so we?re very pleased to contribute to this great resource.? Arike Oke, Managing Director of Black Cultural Archives ?Black history is vital for every young persons' development and understanding of their identity and the world around them. To become fully rounded people, it is important that all young people are given meaningful access to a full version of history.? Lavinya Stennett founder of Black Curriculum ?100 Black Britons is a timely project, we are in need of more projects that focus on the often untold narratives of Black British pioneers. It is important that their legacy and the spirit of hope they embodied is carried on for future generations. By teaching this in schools we are ensuring their place in history is never forgotten.? Ife Thompson, Director of BLAM "In line with the current momentum to include Black History as an integral part of the National Curriculum in schools throughout the UK, the 100 Great Black Britons Competition provides an excellent opportunity to broaden the horizon of young minds whilst having fun." Joy Sigaud, Editor, EDITIONS LIFESTYLE Black History Month Magazine Entries for the competition are now open on www.100greatblackbritons.co.uk entries close on the 30st of September 2020.The most creative and innovative projects will be featured on the website in October. The website will become a permanent resource for teachers to support Black History in the National Curriculum. We are encouraging educators who want to share their knowledge and resources to upload content to the campaign?s official website: www.100greatblackbritons.co.uk As we approach Windrush Day on the 22nd of June 2020, teachers and parents who are currently doing school at home can use these resources to help children and young people learn more about the role and impact of people of African descent in British History. ?Teaching about our history, equality and diversity to promote a fully inclusive atmosphere in schools should be embedded into daily life in schools. The goal is always to celebrate festivals and events such as black history month to highlight and embrace our community and not to make up for what is often forgotten and overlooked.? Niparun Nessa, Secondary Teacher and Equalities Campaigner 100 Great Black Britons book and game - launching Oct 2020 As part of the 100 Great Black Britons campaign a book co-written by Patrick Vernon OBE and Dr Angelina Osborne, will be publishing later this year along with a board game celebrating important Black British figures and their impact on British culture. https://www.100greatblackbritons.co.uk/index.html

  6. That wasn't very well thought through. He needs a strong nudge.
  7. Are you sure it is a genuine email from your insurer and not a phishing attempt? I would call your insurer on a telephone number on your policy documents and find out what has been going on. It seems very strange that there is such a long gap.

But if we stop now, we risk increasing the spread of coronavirus. The government has now published ?staying safe outside your home? for guidance on what the new rules will mean. 11. THanks for posting this nxjen. I completed one myself and passed it on to a few people, some of whom were very interested - especially the kids, they thought it was a great idea and set to work immediately!
  12. Update from Southwark Freecycle this morning: 'We would like to thank you for your understanding and being such caring members of Southwark freecycle. In line with some of the other freecycle/recycle groups we have decided to reopen our group but for now we will only allow posts where social distancing can be observed. We are saddened by the amount of items going to landfill but more so by the huge number losing their lives to this awful virus. To you all we say be careful and observe SOCIAL DISTANCING at all times. Thank you Your Moderating Team.'
  13. Wasn't there a post recently from Renata saying that, due to staffing issues at Peckham, they would not be delivering post every day but would be collecting it daily from postboxes? That, combined with the national suspension of Saturday deliveries, has cut down the frequency of deliveries.
  14. My visiting Goldfinches in Underhill seem to like velvety nesting materials as they have been carefully cutting off pieces of one of my silver plants and taking them off!

  17. Did you know that 16 and 17-year-olds are not allowed to submit a question to the Government?s coronavirus press briefings? If you find this as shocking as I did, please help spread the message by signing the petition calling on Government to allow 16 and 17-year-olds to submit questions to the coronavirus press conferences. http://chng.it/gsW2TQWhxk
  18. The Noise Team do have recording devices which are used to document noise, but last time I checked they cannot be used in court. A noise diary detailing source, date, time started/stopped, duration, type of noise, room/s affected and how the noise affected/disturbed you and your family is a good way to document the continuing nature of the disturbance. Unfortunately the noise team are running a reduced service - you can still report by phone/email, but they are currently not attending (though this may change if lockdown relaxed). They will review cases for potential retrospective action when they return to the office. Have you talked to other neighbours to see if anyone else is also affected?
  19. The Noise Team are currently running a reduced service which means you can report incidents by phone/email, but they don't come out. However, once they are back in the office they'll be reviewing incidents for potential retrospective action. It is worth keeping a noise diary of date, times, rooms affected and how you were disturbed, as well as location noise is coming from.
  20. Hi Delanie, I am very sorry for your loss. Councils can be unsympathetic at the best of times, but hopefully they can make adjustments during this time. I am assuming that the council in question is Southwark. If I were you I'd contact Cambridge House Law Centre. They are still available, but are working remotely. They have a very good housing team and used to receive funding from Southwark to give free advice to Southwark residents: 'We are still offering all of our normal services to new and existing clients during this lockdown. To control the spread of the coronavirus, we are working remotely and helping people by email and over the phone because our offices are closed. To contact the Law Centre, please call 020 7358 7025 between 10am and 1pm, or 2pm and 4pm, Monday to Friday. You can also email us on [email protected] with your details and we will get back to you. If we are unable to assist you we will direct or signpost you to someone who can.' [https://ch1889.org/law-centre] If you are dealing with another council, then the CAB or Shelter England both have very good advice lines: - https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/about-us/contact-us/contact-us/contact-us/ - https://england.shelter.org.uk/get_help Other options would be to get your local Councillor and/or MP involved, but I would try the legal advice route first. Best wishes, Ilona
  21. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/may/04/canada-yukon-coronavirus-caribou Canada's Yukon asks residents to stay one caribou ? or four ravens ? apart As Canada?s Yukon territory braces for the coronavirus, residents have been asked keep one caribou?s length apart from each another. (For those not familiar with the dimensions of the reindeer, that?s roughly equivalent to two husky lengths or eight loaves of sourdough bread.) The light-hearted advice is part of a viral public health awareness campaign that seeks to inform residents and pay homage to the region?s cultural history. The guidelines from Yukon?s department of health also advised residents that keeping the distance of four ravens ? the official bird of the territory ? will help prevent transmission of the virus. The most recent ad, released at the end of April, advises residents to maintain a distance of one cord of wood ? the standard measurement for chopped firewood. ?A cord of wood is actually 2.4 meters/8 feet long, but extra space means extra-safe,? the poster says. Despite the recent lockdown-inspired popularity of home baking, sourdough bread was included to reflect the baked delicacy?s deep historical ties to the region. Early miners and their families fiercely protected sourdough starters and anyone who survived a winter north of the Arctic Circle became known as a ?sourdough?. (Provincial authorities also caution that while a one caribou ? 2m ? is a safe distance in terms of social distancing and Covid-19 mitigation, Yukoners should keep more than 90m away from actual caribou.)

  23. jimlad48 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > > > > They're not regulations, they are advice and > guidance. An important distinction. I'm afraid jimlad48 they are enforceable public health regulations. Advice and guidance would not be enough in a national emergency and the police would not be able to enforce them, issue fines or take you to court if your trangression were serious enough. You can read about them here: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/police-given-new-powers-and-support-to-respond-to-coronavirus and https://www.met.police.uk/advice/advice-and-information/c19/coronavirus-covid-19/the-new-police-powers/.
  24. Hi, could you contact them and see if, given the lockdown, they will convert your gift card to an e-giftcard which can be used online & in store? If they are a decent business they will try to do the right thing given the current circumstances. If they don't I would contact CAB or one of the consumer journalists on the Guardian etc. and try and get them to intervene.
  25. That was a very distressing case. Have donated.
