I should be sitting next to my favourite Italian lake now, but sadly it all went up in Covid smoke. I'm actually quite relieved, as well as sad to miss seeing friends, as I would not want to import anything nasty and I think we all need to take a measured approach to easing the restrictions and put the health and welfare of the wider community first. Hopefully it will not be too long before we can return to our favourite places.

I have a pair of greater spotted woodpeckers who regularly come into the garden. One of them was refusing to be intimidated by the parakeets this afternoon and would not give up his spot on a bird feeder!! Very absorbing to watch.

Disabled Shopper asked to take a sit in Sainsburys - why?
IlonaM replied to trinidad's topic in The Lounge
Yes, I think unfortunately the security guard forgot she was waiting to go in or there was a change in security guard on the door and the message was not passed on that she had only recently arrived. Distressing for her none the less. I can understand that as, speaking from personal experience, it can be very challenging and upsetting as someone older or disabled when things like this happen. Maybe next time she visits she could have a chat to customer services to let them know what happened so that she and others do not experience similar treatment in the future? Also, in case it does happen again and she is asked to sit and wait (at least they do have seats available!), check what is going on and remind the door staff that she is waiting to go in. I often have to wait for taxis after appointments when I go to the vet etc., so someone could have thought she was waiting for a ride home. -
Yes, the phone scams are back - had several over the last week or so. So far only recorded messages, not humans.

I suggest that she contact Shelter for advice by phone/email once the helpline is open after the weekend: https://england.shelter.org.uk/get_help There may be some advice available in the help sheets on the website as well, in particular the page on Coronavirus-related housing issues - https://england.shelter.org.uk/housing_advice/coronavirus.

Thank you for letting us know. What lovely news. -
Have you been to the Headache clinic at Kings? It is part of the Neurology department. Professor Goadsby is a leading expert and very proactive. Worth getting a referral from your GP for when things start getting back to some kind of normal for outpatients clinics.

It had a significant impact on both the original property and neighbouring properties. Go and troll elsewhere. -

A police officer told me it was a house three doors along Melford. No doubt we'll find out at some point. Hopefully no-one was injured and they all got out safely. Currently block at bottom of Underhill still in place. -
I've heard a few flying overhead over the last week or two. THe first one sounded very alien after weeks of gorgeous peace filled with bird song.

I have seen at least four fire engines, several police cars and ambulance racing up Underhill from the S Circular towards the cemetery in the last 20 minutes or so. I can smell smoke over my garden between Underhill & Wood Vale. Looks like an ongoing major incident. . Incident appears to be at/near junction with Melford Rd. Update: property on Melford Rd (towards Underhill end) Bottom of Underhill (Horniman end) closed to traffice - police blocking entry & exit. Presume road closed above incident as well - Underhill Rd juction with Melford down has emergency vehicles parked.

Home school competition to explore Black British History Patrick Vernon OBE London, ENG, United Kingdom 16 May 2020 ? In the light of the COVID-19 crisis and with schools closed until further notice, we are launching a new ?home school? competition for children and young people, to explore Black British History and multicultural Britain. The competition, sponsored by The National Education Union (NEU), the largest education union in Europe, is part of the special launch of the 100 Great Black Britons campaign created by Patrick Vernon OBE to celebrate the continued legacy and achievements of Black people in Britain. The competition is open to all age groups. Children and young people are asked to create a fun and unique project celebrating Black Britons and their legacy. There is also a special teacher's competition to develop resources that can be shared as part of a permanent online teaching resource celebrating Black history. ?The current crisis has highlighted the centrality of Black people in Britain, to the NHS and care work, transport systems, food supplies, utilities, research, education and so much more. The NEU supports this competition to celebrate what we have always known that Britain?s history is irrefutably rooted in Black and global history and that our members do a fantastic job in teaching this. It will be a fabulous opportunity to showcase some of their work and that of their pupils?. Kevin Courtney, NEU Joint General Secretary ?Black history in Britain goes as far back as it?s possible to go. Children growing up in modern Britain should know their true history, and whether they are Black, brown or white, Black history is part our of national story. Their resources on the 100 Great Black Britons site can be used by families, parents, guardians and carers to help children understand themselves and their wider history. This is central to Black Cultural Archives? purpose, so we?re very pleased to contribute to this great resource.? Arike Oke, Managing Director of Black Cultural Archives ?Black history is vital for every young persons' development and understanding of their identity and the world around them. To become fully rounded people, it is important that all young people are given meaningful access to a full version of history.? Lavinya Stennett founder of Black Curriculum ?100 Black Britons is a timely project, we are in need of more projects that focus on the often untold narratives of Black British pioneers. It is important that their legacy and the spirit of hope they embodied is carried on for future generations. By teaching this in schools we are ensuring their place in history is never forgotten.? Ife Thompson, Director of BLAM "In line with the current momentum to include Black History as an integral part of the National Curriculum in schools throughout the UK, the 100 Great Black Britons Competition provides an excellent opportunity to broaden the horizon of young minds whilst having fun." Joy Sigaud, Editor, EDITIONS LIFESTYLE Black History Month Magazine Entries for the competition are now open on www.100greatblackbritons.co.uk entries close on the 30st of September 2020.The most creative and innovative projects will be featured on the website in October. The website will become a permanent resource for teachers to support Black History in the National Curriculum. We are encouraging educators who want to share their knowledge and resources to upload content to the campaign?s official website: www.100greatblackbritons.co.uk As we approach Windrush Day on the 22nd of June 2020, teachers and parents who are currently doing school at home can use these resources to help children and young people learn more about the role and impact of people of African descent in British History. ?Teaching about our history, equality and diversity to promote a fully inclusive atmosphere in schools should be embedded into daily life in schools. The goal is always to celebrate festivals and events such as black history month to highlight and embrace our community and not to make up for what is often forgotten and overlooked.? Niparun Nessa, Secondary Teacher and Equalities Campaigner 100 Great Black Britons book and game - launching Oct 2020 As part of the 100 Great Black Britons campaign a book co-written by Patrick Vernon OBE and Dr Angelina Osborne, will be publishing later this year along with a board game celebrating important Black British figures and their impact on British culture. https://www.100greatblackbritons.co.uk/index.html
