  1. In today's Independent: http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/amazon-scam-email-bank-card-details-fake-theft-a7465311.html 'Cyber criminals have targeted Amazon customers with a ?convincing? new phishing scam that aims to steal shoppers? bank details. A spoof email has been sent to thousands of people in the UK, US, and Australia saying their "Amazon.com order cannot be shipped" ? just as a larger number of people than usual log on to the site to make purchases in the run-up to Christmas. According to consumer rights groups, the message claims there is a problem processing the recipient's order, adding that they will not be able to access their Amazon account or place any other orders until they confirm their information by following a link The link leads to an ?authentic-looking? page, which asks the victim to confirm their name, address, and bank card information. Mary Bach, chair of non-profit AARP, says the con relies on Amazon having a huge share of the global market. ?So many people right now are using Amazon,? she says, "randomly sending out emails" gives scammers good odds of reaching someone who is actually waiting for an Amazon order. The enormous online retailer, which has just announced it will offer 'Black Friday' style bargains all the way through to 22 December, has provided a help page online for people who believe they may have received a spoof email. ?From time to time you might receive e-mails purporting to come from Amazon.co.uk which do not come from actual Amazon.co.uk accounts," the retailer said, "instead, they are falsified and attempt to convince you to reveal sensitive account information. These false e-mails, also called 'spoof e-mails' or 'phishing e-mails,' look similar to real emails. Often these e-mails direct you to a false website that looks similar to an Amazon.co.uk website, where you might be asked to give your account information and password. "Unfortunately, these false websites can steal your sensitive information; later, this information can be used without your knowledge to commit fraud." The store added that the real Amazon will never ask for sensitive information such as National Insurance Numbers, bank account details, credit card numbers, or personal information that could be used to answer security questions via email. It added that if in doubt people should contact the company directly.'
  2. Jules it's not a sore point - I've been working in the field for a long time and I've seen how this kind of language affects those who are seeking asylum or seeking to regularize their immigration status. The language used by the certain newspapers, politicians and members of the public can have a devastating effect on the health of those on the receiving end. Like Donald Trump, you might like using the term 'illegals', but it has no reference in law. The 'real term' you rely upon is used as an inflammatory term in the discussion on migration and immigration by particular groups. Those who work in the field, on all sides, chose to use more neutral language.
  3. Let's try to leave the Daily Mail terms in the gutter where they belong, shall we? Undocumented migrant covers a multitude of possibilities - overstayer, failed asylum seeker, those in the country without leave for whatever reason etc. It also includes those who haven't had their immigration applications resolved yet. Let's show others the same respect we'd expect to be shown ourselves whatever their circumstances. The immigration debate needn't be inflammatory. 7. Not sure whether this would have gone any further, but my mother just arrived back from a day out looking rather weighed down with bags. She's staying with me, so rang my doorbell when she arrived. I noticed a scooter waiting at the gate which drove inside the gate and towards the house as I was letting her in. Initially I thought my neighbour must be having a takeaway, but as soon as he saw me and my mother had come inside he drove off again. I had the distinct feeling that my mother had been followed from the bus stop. We are letting the non-urgent police line know and I thought I'd post it on the forum just in case it wasn't an innocent case of a mistaken house. - Be aware of your surroundings, especially in the dark.

  25. If she is a graduate or graduating next year she could look into the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme [see https://www.jet-uk.org/index.php]. I taught in rural Japan for a year in the 90s and really enjoyed it (went with a CTEFLA qualification in hand but not necessary for the programme). There are options to request city vs rural etc. You do not need Japanese before you go. If she wants to get a TEFL qualification, I'd recommend a college-based course, rather than the online equivalent, for the teaching practice with real students. The Guardian has a page on TEFL - https://www.theguardian.com/education/tefl - There may be some helpful advice there or links. There used to be a very good book on getting into TEFL, but I can't remember the name.
