  1. This made me cry. I feel for anyone he feels deceived. The lies and mistruths told during the campaign are what truly angered me the most as it robbed people of the chance of making a genuine decision. I am very fearful for the future but hope that leadership emerges that can steer the country back on course. 2. Louisa-- I don't want to get into a debate about the E.U. You asked why and I told you. The UK is out now so the merits of the EU are now irrelevant for this country. The new leadership is tasked with navigating the country through this extreme period of uncertainty as best they can. WorkingMummy-- not being together makes things more complicated for your children. I understand your feeling of loss. My husband is part Irish and is planning to apply for an Irish passport to keep some link to the EU
  3. Louisa I think people are judging it based on what the parties who would have to grant the deal are saying publicly and why. working Mummy, sorry your partners job and legal status are at risk. I hope it all works out for your family
  4. Sorry midivydale. If it's any consolation, your neighbours don't feel that way. South ?London had some of the highest remain votes in the country
  5. The E.U. have confirmed they won't even start trade deal negotiations until after the UK is outside the EU having completed the two year divorce under article 50. Getting them to even discuss trade simultaneously at this point would be a win.
  6. The EU will potentially be getting all financial services business related to Europe that is currently carried out in London. I'm not sure I follow the idea you are stating. Are you saying the UK might lose financial services but will get other types of business? 7. I know what you mean Working Mummy. I see Boris as someone who would do something he genuinely believed would be bad for the country if it would keep him in power. Gove, on the other hand is uncompromising ideologue but I don't think he would intentionally do harm (though unintentionally for sure). Both are bad but Boris to me is scary. Someone driven only by power with no ideological framework is capable of almost anything. I don't know where his moral compass lies. Gove has a different belief system to me and is definitely a nationalist. However, I believe there are lines he would not cross and things he would not do.

  9. Gove is strident but appears to have some genuine conviction. Boris is charming but completely ruthless and unprincipled. I think Boris would be a much more dangerous choice.
  10. I know-- HSBC and JP Morgan estimated 5,000 between just the two of them. It will be 10s of thousands of jobs relocated to Europe. The contingency plans were underway before the vote.
  11. Morgan Stanley are denying it but sources within the bank confirmed it to the BBC. The BBC aren't retracting what the printed though it appears their sources spoke to the press without permission of the bank.
  12. I just hope the US and France can learn the lessons from this before we have Trump and Le Pen leading two of the worlds major democracies. Richard Florida, in Who's Your City made many of the points Louisa has (excluding immigration) about 10 years ago. He said the wildly different prospects of the educated, urban international elite from the rest of their countrymen would eventually result in a populist backlash. I first read that book in February this year and it seemed to explain so much of the Trump phenomena at the time. The only component he missed was the immigration angle that seems to have dominated the backlash in Europe and the US. I hope the country can come together but we are starting to lay people off on Monday. Somehow, I imagine the divisions between young and old, urban elites and disaffected may only intensify as part of the fall-out already underway. I hope everyone here isn't affected personally and let's all hope the new leadership is capable of guiding the country through these uncharted waters. Back to a long tough day at work.
  13. civilservant Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > "the sky is falling" said Chicken Little, and the > markets, and their friends in the EDF ran around > like headless chickens Calm down- Louisa asked why there was a dip and I answered. It's why the markets got jittery.
  14. Okay, sorry if that came across as rude. That was after you said that you didn't know about certain trade issues and suggested I didn't either and so the information I provided was pure speculation. My response was acknowledging what you yourself said about your background while explaining it was what I do for a living. Still, I can see how it could come across as rude so I genuinely apologize if it made you feel bad.
  15. Also, the press has said he opened fire. The German special forces have now shot him dead. Edited as the press stories have changed as more information has come through http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/06/23/germany-shooting-man-opens-fire-in-cinema-complex-in-viernheim/
  16. I know. I never said it was a terrorist attack. I said the market fears it could be and if it is, that it will influence the vote.
  17. Sorry if you genuinely felt I was being condescending. That wasn't my intention and I never said or suggested anyone on either side of the debate was stupid (unlike other posters who actually have thrown around insults on both sides).
  18. 25-50 wounded / dead. The markets fear that if its an foreign / Islamist terrorist attack while the polls are still open, the sentiment in the UK might shift back to Brexit. The market found out about it before it went live on the mainstream press but its now everywhere.
  19. Its because of the shooting in Germany Louisa Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Not sure why, but in the last hour or so the > markets have taken a bit of a jitter. 20. Ok, happy to move on then. Emotions are running high for everyone. I hope the country comes together tomorrow irrespective of the result. I know a few people who have had major falling outs with their parents of this vote which seems crazy.
  21. God, are people planning to stay up until the results are in? I wasn't planning to but it seems like everyone I know is. Still at work so don't feel anxious yet. Our projects in part depend on the vote so its a pretty chilled out day as we are all just waiting to see which of two courses we take starting tomorrow towards the rest of the year.

  23. Fox, David Cameron already got an agreement from the EU before the referendum that Britain wouldn't pay for Eurozone bailouts.
  24. Okay, I apologize if I offended you by saying I felt you were stirring shit because you were bored. It genuinely felt that way and like you were personally attacking me out of the blue. I said what I did because I don't think how you characterized my statement that you quoted was at all the attitude I've approached this with. In fact, I think your characterization of that comment and my approach on this thread in general is inaccurate, insulting and unfair. The people I have been discussing this with most vigorously had the exact opposite opinion of my approach and last night we all agreed we'd enjoyed hashing it out together and appreciated the level of respect we'd all given one another (that's on the other thread).
  25. Actually, maxxi I don't know what your problem is. Tell me or don't but if you simply want to get into a personal fight on the internet, then I'll take a pass if its all the same to you. Right now, it just feels like you want to be rude and hostile.
