Sweaty Betty - the final nail in the gentrification coffin?
LondonMix replied to Louisa's topic in The Lounge
If any of you lot went to the local gyms around here you'd see that many people working out invest in high tech and/or fashionable kit. If you work out a lot (5 days a week etc) then it probably becomes more rather than less important to you what your kit looks like as you spend a lot of time in it. Gyms around here are also very social. People hang out with gym class mates outside of the gym so its an entire scene on to itself. That fashionable gym kit is a thing (at all price points) is evidenced by Kate Hudson's very successful (affordable) line in the US and Beyonce's new line with H&M. Nice looking kit makes people feel better and high functioning kit (smart breathable fabrics etc) are more pleasant to work out in. -
Lousia, I've posted it on the new restaurant's thread for you.

At Louisa's request I am posting that Firezza is opening up on Lordship Lane. They have put in a planning application for the old Cafe Noodle site.
-
I agree, they aren't great anymore and they deliver from Herne Hill. You should be happy Louisa that its not a major chain! Was Cafe Noodle still operating at all?
-
So you think these business are thinking of opening in the area?

Last offered distances for primary schools 2016
LondonMix replied to Fjgb's topic in The Family Room Discussion
The applicants is number of people who put it as one of their top 6 schools so its totally possible that they still offered a place to everyone who applied and didn't have a higher choice offered iyswim. The sibling figure does seem weird though. -

During my build, building control insisted on seeing the firestopping before dry wall was overlaid. He specifically told the contractor to call at the specific point and said if it wasn't visible he'd make them remove the finishing. Again, I'm only speaking for personal experience and I may have dealt with an exceptional officer but I find it hard to understand. Of course the contractor is to blame and I hope there are legal penalties that can be put forward against the director of that now bankrupt company. However, building control exist to protect the public against rogue contractors. Of course one of my top priorities is getting the people impacted by this compensation and housing. However, I live in Southwark. New primary schools and secondary schools are currently being constructed and its important that some type of investigation into what happened within the council takes place to see if appropriate duty of care was adhered to. Perhaps it was, but without proper accountability what prevents lapse behavior now and in future? -
I can't see this happening. Until a definite route is selected for the Bakerloo line extension is formailzed (right now Old Kent Roaad is preferred but not selected), nothing will happen there. I believe from threads on the tube line extension that it would run to that spot.

Yeah, its good. I liked it

Renata, what exactly does that mean? Are building control saying that it was fine when they inspected but has subsequently been changed / altered? Can you elaborate on what the fire control issues are that have currently been flagged? -

How, the catchments are much bigger than previous years. Heber's catchment is over 3 times the size its been before! -
I don't think they are physical shops-- tried to go to Yoobi for sushi last Sunday and the address is actually the deliveroo depot. I think they may be bringing it in from central London as there is Yoobi in Soho. I'm not sure where Tommi's is...

Renata-- aren't some of the problems with these buildings related to inadequate fire proofing and fire controls? That certainly falls under building control's remit and its something they are supposed to verify via physical inspection. That has been my personal experience with Southwark building control. I'm sorry but something doesn't smell right in that response from the officer involved if its true the fire proofing was not done to the then applicable code. I look forward to your and Southwark's further clarification on that point. -
Well, there are already loads of high street chains on Rye Lane (Subways, McDonalds, Primark, Clarks etc) so I'd call it inevitable. Rye Lane will continue to attract big chains, though perhaps slightly more upmarket ones. Bellenden Road and the side roads of Peckham Rye will probably be where all the indies congregate.

I disagree. I know that what is said on here is monitored. If there is enough public outcry and statements of support, it too will influence how Southwark and others proceed. -
DF his point is keep up with the times by offering what people want now-- ie. something more authentic and regional than what LL curry houses provide. I'm sure you get the point DF.

I agree it is depressing-- especially in light of the furor that was generated for a private toy shop having its rent increased. How people were ready to take to the streets over that and yet appear largely indifferent to the plight of so many people in their community reveals a shocking set of priorities. -
Central government leasing land is neither a land grab or privatisation. Nonsense- The Palmerston, Franklins, and Blue Mountain have been around forever and no one talks crap about them. People just like what they like. I have a friend like that who decided to she wanted to be a vet at age 7. She thinks its crazy it actually happened as when she first said it, she couldn't possibly have known she had the math and science skills to get through the very demanding course. Sometimes, picking what you want early is just lucky odds rather than some clear vision of your future. I don't think uni is right for everyone or the only path. However, based on what you've said about granddaughter, it would seem to be her best option. I agree with Ellem and also echo what DaveR says. For most careers, employers see university as an education in how to think, write, and reason effectively as well as an intensive course on how to learn new skills. They don't expect you to know how to do the job. To learn how to do a job, you'll always need specific on the job training, even in finance and the law. Many people switch careers mid life and so having a solid academic foundation is all she should be worried about unless she has a specific passion. With a good degree from a good uni, she's very unlikely to be unemployed and will have more options open to her overall than if she went down a more specialized route. Wow-- I'm floored this was signed off by Southwark... Shocking and disgraceful don't even begin to describe this kind of gross negligence. As someone who relies on Southwark Building control to enforce safety requirements throughout my area (including construction of new schools for use by my family), I very strongly need to see an investigation into what happened here to have any kind of confidence that this body is fit for purpose.
