  1. I think M&S believe that they will have enough costumers to pay the rent the landlord is proposing and still make a profit that rewards the business risk / investment they are making. I believe Iceland do not believe they have enough costumers to pay the rent the landlord is proposing and still make a profit they find acceptable. I believe if M&S are wrong, they will close down and another chain supermarket will take over the space.
  2. If you want to walk to the liveliest bit of Lordship Lane (where the cinema and shops etc are) then let its a mile so closer to 20 minutes walk. Its about 20 min to Peckham Rye and the same to Honor Oak, which is manageable if your commute from there is straight forward.
  3. M&S is replacing Iceland. They are both large chains selling food so your point makes no sense. In the end, people who are supportive of M&S opening probably want to buy the goods M&S sells... Small business owners on Lordship Lane have come on in support of the application as they think it will be good for the retail footfall of the high street. pebs Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I really cannot understand why so many people are > in favour of an M&S (all 62 pages....). 4. K!tchen is on the banned list (or was)
  5. I think so too. While young people are ideological, I don't think the traditional left-right paradigm is the natural fit. I think more people are centrists that can swing depending on the candidate and policies. That's just based on anecdotal experiences of course
  6. Yes you can-- we did that for the kitchen in our old flat. Its not terribly expensive but of course that depends on what you use. For the retrofit we used granite but in our new kitchen we have quartz. We sourced both from Affordable Granite which are very good value and I can attest that the work is very good and lasts. Quartz isn't cheap but the cost will really depend on the size of your kitchen. Their prices including installation prices and options are available on the website. Good luck.
  7. Glad I did it and glad I was made to up to a point. I eventually stopped but only after I?d been at it for a while. I think it?s a tough one. It?s important life lesson I think for children to learn the work involved with acquiring a skill?slow (and dull practice) can lead to progress and reward. However, once they?ve been doing it for a few years, I think most of that life lesson is learned and unless they are a music prodigy or have genuine passion of their own then its fine to let them do something else. Learning the logic of music when young is supposed to be good for broader cognitive development and I think if you have learned music you have a greater appreciation for it (maybe). My brother in law was a very talented footballer and he quit his club because he didn?t like some of the boys. He regrets it terribly that his father didn?t force him to continue. As a teenager you have so little foresight or long term thinking. Only if I was dealing with a really talented child would I consider insisting they continue at music beyond a certain age. Good luck making your decision.
  8. I find it really hard to follow the tribal loyalties in UK politics. In the run up to the election, every cab driver I spoke to (I take a taxi for work most days to get around) was against Labor and were staunchly Conservative. Someone once explained this to me as the legacy of Maggie Thatcher who was popular for right to buy (no idea if this is true). My husband?s grandparents are very London working class and are lifelong Tory voters. His parents are very working class and lifelong Labour supporters. Of the three brothers (all of who are now white collar university educated professionals), one voted Labor the other Tory (because he found Ed Miliband totally uninspiring) and the last voted Tory because he actually thought Cameron was quite a good PM. Won?t tell you which one I?m married to! I?m not really sure what the true demographic of Tory and Labor voters is in London. My working class Welsh friends are all Labour but they get riled even at the mention of Margret Thatcher because of what she did to Welsh mining communities (is that right?) Why are the Scottish so left leaning as a block?
  9. The 8:39 from Denmark Hill was 5 minutes late and very busy but it was fine. It's still the fastest way for me to get into work. Door to door my commute to the city is circa 35 min from ED which isn't bad at all.
  10. Right you are! 11. What tax cuts? The conservatives increasedthe highest rate of income tax from 40 percent when they took office to 45 percent now (they were temoparirly 50 percent) but are still 5 percent higher than when they took office. On top of that higher earners lost their tax free allowance which increased their tax bill by 4,500 per annum on top of the 5 percent increase in the marginal rate. northdulmum Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I voted Lib Dem. 12. Same for me. The two schools will have very different catchments. Even if they use as the crow flies and even if the greatest distance offered is a mile for the site, the intake would go down into Peckham, up into Forest Hill through all of Dulwich and over to Nunhead. Who on this forum feels that they won't get in? DulwichBorn&Bred Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Not true Otta. 14. I think in this instance, its the size of the premises. Most agents have small office and Foxtons space is one of the few larger units that could actually accommodate a business that needs something that size for operational efficiency and can't open here as a result. Also, of the various agents Foxton has the worst reputation for aggressive tactics and dishonesty... (just saying)
  15. Agree Mr. Ben... Also, don't forget the additional investment costs associated with creating a cinema like PH.
  16. Me too! That would definitely be the best of both worlds. I wonder if Waitrose are considering the old East Dulwich Deli site. The owners keep doing short pop-up leases, suggesting something is afoot.

  18. I think most of the comments against Iceland have been along the lines of ?the food is disgusting and the shop is an eyesore? rather than, ?only gross poor people shop at Iceland so let?s close it down.? I?m not saying the former sentiment is correct (I?ve never been to Iceland but I?ve learned on this thread the store has good veg and cheap dairy apparently!) but it?s not really sneering at the costumers either. I also agree the reverse snobbery comments along the lines of ?only people with more money than sense committed to social cleansing of working class Dulwich? were primarily trolling / wind-ups. I?m glad it?s an M&S rather than a Waitrose. I like Waitrose and would happily shop at one but ultimately it?s more of a generic supermarket. M&S is more special occasion picnic food, fancy snacks etc which at least is some variety compared to the other supermarkets already in the area. I get their single serving salads all the time from Waterloo so this will be much more convenient. Louis PMd me the links to the updated planning documents that were posted last month. Haven?t read them but it certainly suggests things are moving forward.
  19. I know it's part of Cineworld. I said the cinemas are small not the organisation. For a 3 screen cinema you would always only have 1 ticket office or 2 at a push. Therefore the online booking system does not allow them to achieve any operational cost savings. They therefore should charge for the booking system. Corrected for typos made on my phone!
  20. I'm not saying don't criticize it, I'm saying that particular criticism doesn't make sense (to me). Everyone of course is welcome to disagree with me :)
  21. I?ve been told by Louisa via PM that she?s spoken to M&S?s customer service team who have confirmed it will be an M&S but it won?t open until summer 2016. It will be an M&S Food Hall rather than Simply Food. She asked me to post this for her as she?s banned for the moment from posting in the General comments area. Suppose we?ll know within a few months since if they plan to open within just over 12 months, Iceland would need to vacate pretty soon and building works would probably need to start in the autumn.
  22. Get off your high horse everyone. These are really small cinemas?developing an IT structure to support online booking is an investment and each cinema still have to have a ticket window so its not really offset by reducing other costs. Charging those who use the service a higher ticket price isn?t crazy. If you don?t want to pay it, then pick them up at the cinema if 1.50 is too high a price to pay for the added convenience. Or you can become a member and get a discount ?
  23. Any of you know what's the latest on the timing for this and if it will be M&S or Waitrose in the end?
  24. Anyone here every been to the Lake District? I'm organising a group trip and given the size of the group there are only 3 locations available with houses large enough to accommodate everyone. 1. Cartmel 2. Coniston 3. Keswick Any thoughts on any of the above would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
  25. I?m shocked! I walked by this morning and it actually looks like it will open on time. On Monday I would never have guessed it.
