  1. It used to be our local. But then the great East Dulwich thing happened and we had a baby. So we can't go there anymore. But we do have our saturday afternoon "pint break" after our Lordship Lane shopping at Liquorish or the EDT or the Bishop for a drink and a blackcurrant and soda for the little ones. Its a shame to go from weekly visitors to the CPT to tri monthly. PS not suggesting CPT has major face lift or tries to become Bishop - but maybe children allowed outside on the terrace? With the men in work clothes?
  2. My firm is introducing a new type of web usage monitoring that will list the top most visited sites on our network. have horrible feeling that the EDF is going to be on the list as visit several times a day. The only saving grace is that I will most likely be the person who gets the list to review and advise management on the results of the monitoring. Maybe I can come up with a legitimate reason to be lurking on here during work time? PS I don't post from work as that is clearly against our IT usage policy.....
  3. Thanks Fuschia that sounds a sensible logical explanation.
  4. been going on at least 3 years. look more like internal engineers than road diggers I think. But it could be that.
  5. Why are there so many British Gas vans parked outside the sorting office in the morning? Are gas men moonlighting as postmen or vice versa? Or is Pellat Road some sort of base camp before gas men go out to repair boilers? Not the most obvious place. Just curious as to what it is all about - and I wish the gas men would not sit in their vans with engines running while they wait for their instructions. All thoughts on this welcome! Merry Christmas
  6. Back in 1995 a good friend moved into the flats opposite Kings on the Rye near the estate agent Burnett Ware and Graves. I didn't live in London then. My mother in law, ex of Balham, stated "there is no such place as East Dulwuich, its Peckham". The friend who lived here refused to answer my questions about it (I hadn't visited) because"it's not great and there is no way you are ever going to live here so there's no point telling you". He had me down as too suburban. Move forward to 2001, priced out of Greenwich where we were living, we came, saw houses we could afford, and moved here. The friend had moved out and up to St John's Wood, then to Highgate, and is now in Wanstead. So plenty of mobility for East Dulwichites?
  7. Hey Mr Ben, I've sat behind you and Mrs Ben in the Bishop and been through the crazy egg thing with you. I'm always a bit worried when other people complain about the food somewhere and mine hasn't come yet, in case mine gets caught up in sorting out the other people's complaint iyswim. So I was very relieved when you explained the egg thing so nicely and the bishop staff were cool with it and my food came and was tasty and everyone was happy! The menu does change, it's consistently good - I've made some mistakes - too much chilli relishon the burger, and my son would like macaroni cheese back on the menu, but we keep going back. Have been in there on a Friday and the clientele is v different to Saturday lunchtime. Hurray for the Bishop.
  8. This thread has really annoyed me. JoJo is a fairly reasonably priced shop. If you really want to get exorcised about baby clothes and the cost of them may I suggest Bootiki (Melbourne Grove) or Raisin (on parade by the Green bar). See? These places have been existing right under your very eyes and you lot hadn't even noticed. Amazing isn't it that babywear shops have been here for ages! Expensive ones! Selling designer clothes at ridiculous prices! Guess what JoJo also sell blankets. And reins. And safety equipment. And other items at a similar price to Mothercare (presumably noone is going to argue that Mothercare is an exorbitantly expensive upstart selling designer tat?) A high street cannot exist on sushi bars and vegetarian book shops alone. A lot of you really need to get over yourselves. Live and let live. And for the real masochists among you once you've been to Raisin and Bootiki, try Jo Partridge Kids on Upland Road. Guaranteed to get the bile flowing.
  9. Think what this thread proves is that shop keepers have good and bad days. Cassius's post made me chuckle as I have the opposite experience whenever I go in!
  10. Have been following this thread with interest and then realised I wasn't 100% sure where CG is. Checked map, and what I thought was CG is Grove Lane. So on Saturday I will be paying a visit to see what all the fuss is about. Can anyone point out major points of interest/famous residents past or present? Maurice I promise not to throw litter or urinate anywhere, and would be happy to share a glass of sherry should you spot me during my visit. Regards
  11. we just had take away from BBC. They do seem to be having a few teething troubles, Mr KG had to wait a while (we always collect our takeaways). But it was delicious and much nicer than our usual Pistachio Club. No oil, very fresh looking sauce, def a cut above what we usually get. And if you spend over 20 quid you get a free bottle of wine. nice touch.
  12. One piece of good news for DH is that it is to become wheelchair and hence (whispers) buggy, friendly. There was an article in the King's newsletter I get about a campaign to get DH more accessible for patients. It is of course mad that the station for a major hospital is all steps. Anyway there was a coupon to cut out and send to TJMP (I like her abreviation!), which I duly did and then a while later received a copy of a letter, via TJMP from the Dec of State for something saying it was all agreed, funding sorted, DH in the first wave of stations to get accessibility upgrade. It all smelt a bit fishy to me - either someone at King's hadn't done their homework or it was all a puff to score easy brownie points, but whatever at least we will be able to use the station even if there are no trains.
  13. East Dulwichites beware - the reason some of your journeys are more pleasant is because lots of Peckham Rye users are able to get on the soon to be axed DH loop trains, and so are not trying to ram into the ED train with you. Seems to me that without those DH loop line yrains Prye will becoame a no go area, it is really tough trying to get on the trains that come via ED as it is, but without the DH loop trains it will be even worse for everyone whether Edites squashed by the Ryers or Ryers who can't get on. And if you only just miss a bus at LB at night - by say a minute or two it is generally quicker to get the 40 from outside LB or any bus to Elephant and change than to wait and get the next train.
  14. Dear Forumites, I am afraid that Janice Turner has summed up the majority of our favourite topics in her column on page 17 of today's Times. So we should maybe just stop writing about Foxtons, property prices, poncification and inheritance tax? She doesn't deal with religion or dog sh*t so maybe we should stick to those from now on? Yours Katgod
  15. The hut with a concrete area with a little picket fence round is the One O'Clock club. Could do with some cash being spent, but lovely staff, free, and available to everyone. I like the Playground too. I'd like to be on the Friends of Goose Green thing though as spend a lot of time there, and from my reading of the notices up it seems that the playground is not going to get a makeover, rather the money is to be spent on dog related items. I think it's a shame, the only dog related item needed is a big sign to tell dog owners which side of the fence they can let their dogs run around in. Once that is sorted can't see what else is needed.
  16. Whatever next? They were there this morning with a van and their big riot shields near the joiners. Was Miss Hope from the sweetshop having a fight with her off Brookside in Dr Boo? A fight over the last pair of Crocs in the shoe shop? Anyone who dared approach them to find out what was going on please do report in. Many thanks
  17. I usually go ED to London Bridge then Jubilee line to the Wharf. Has anyone got a good alternative route for travel at 8am? Bus to Lewisham then DLR? Bus to New Cross? Open to any suggestions to use as an everyday route or an emergency alternative. Thanks.
  18. I support a new school, and agree that the site of an old school seems a great spot for a new one. My concern, based on what I have read here and on the EDGE site, is about sports facilities. I'd like my son, who is likely to be of the age to attend this school, to be able to play football, rugby, cricket, athletics at school. This should not be the preserve solely of the private schools. All children should be able to play sport at school and I don't see how this is possible on the plans as set out. If the plans are to include use of the Rye, then set that out and show which bits and how much. We risk a badly behaved , obese bunch of Academians otherwise.
  19. a pedestrian crossing outside Somerfield, or at least a zebra crossing so don't have to hike all the way down to the EDT or back to Bushells to cross the road. Would make LL much more user friendly, safer and probably the punters happier.
  20. I was not aware that Christianity had a monopoly on the idea of prayer? Sad for you that you can't interpret a wider intention into DM's original "say a prayer" - one person's prayer is anothers thought or wish or reflection. To suggest that a Christian agenda was inappropriately imposed upon the thread is a bit of an over reaction. The debate was pottering along quite nicely without reference to religion until your post. No one said your sensibilities should be ignored. You can just ignore Dm's, as I am sure she and others will ignore yours. KG
  21. Not much news, they've taken details of the slide and the grafitti, and will call back. Weiredly though GG is not listed on the list of parks or playgrounds on the Southwark website. Maybe someone could mentiuon the slide to Richard Thomaas who seems to be Mr Fix-It at the moment.
  22. i will be phoning southwark shortly re the telly that has appeared outside my house (if i can call a number and get southwark to collect it, why could its owners not do the same rather than dump it outside my house?? but that is another matter) so will try to speak to parks department and report back.
  23. Nooooooo - tell me it's not the green one with the pirate rigging up the side? That's my little one's fave piece of apparatus. Maybe the council have taken it to be part of the new fencing?! Hope they replace it soon, as GGS is so well used and a vital local resource if you are 3. Here's hoping it is found safe and well.
  24. I thought the stall on Sunday was really pretty and a lot of effort had gone in to it. I have a SMBS/Cheese Block reusable bag. I had to spend ?70 on cheese last Christmas to get one of those!!
