  1. Not quite on the verbal vein but I am driven insane by people who talk on their mobile phones and remove it from their ear to in front of their face in order to talk, then return it to their ear. I want to scream "It has a f***ing microphone built in, you muppet, they can hear you even when it is held at your f****ing ear!" I don't wish to appear racist (impossible to avoid actually in they eyes of some PC freaks if one actually expresses the evidence of one's own senses) but this is a practice that I have only observed in young people of a certain racial group and apparent socio-economic class. Any ideas why that might be? Is this a kultural thang?
  2. CWALD, do you still squirt? Just so I know whether to order in a rubber undersheet, you understand? ;-)
  3. So does that make them family hostile or socially responsible? I think many local hostelries could learn from WS. I remember seeing a baby who was barely 6 months old, crying incessantly, being held by a woman in G&B who was sitting drinking wine with her friends/family at 7-45pm. The place was full and noisy, the child was obviously distressed and the parent/carer did not appear to give a damn - seemed quite content to swill wine and chat to her pals who were equally oblivious to the child's welfare. I discretely spoke to the bar staff about it who admitted that no child should be in the bar after 7-30pm but who were also clearly to embarrassed to say anything. I imagine they were fearful of being labelled 'child hostile' on some internet forum and suffering the boycott that might ensue.

Must say 'Yummy Mummy' does p**s me off quite a bit as well as there seems to be ABSOLUTELY no quality control!

  6. Any find they have a penchant for "getting their ducks in a row" or "picking low-hanging fruit"?
  7. In the event of the said mutt not promptly returning home would it be possible for a small child to be tethered to a stake in a clearing at night in order to lure it out?
  8. Without rehashing slanging matches can anyone give us an impartial potted history of what has happened here. I am at a loss to understand how a simple water dispute can lead to the closure of such a great establishment as G&B. I have always liked it and am concerned at how my little chums Emily and Rebecca will earn their living (same goes for the other staff as well of course, whose names I do not know).

  10. What really obnoxious sayings and phrases bug the h**l out of posters here? The one that really p****s me off is people who claim to "work hard and play harder". My God, what crazy, way-out, dangerous and enviable characters they must be!!!! They clearly send the word 'hell-raiser' back to the dictionary for re-definition! Any other bug-bears?
  11. I can confirm that the oysters are LOVELY and the chap running the stall is very friendly. He seems to have a real passion for his produce and attempts to source different varieties whenever possible. I have tried three different types since it opened - fantastic!
  12. I quite agree that the current situation is ridiculous. Every time I log-in there is some flighty feline that has done a runner. May I make a suggestion - how about a Cat Bank (along the lines of a Bottle Bank) on the Goose Green roundabout. Let's put a large wire cage there with a simple flap-type one-way door. Anyone who finds a stray cat can pick it up and dump it there for collection in due course by its hapless owner who would obviously make the Cat Bank their first port-of-call in any search. Any cats that are not collected after, say, a week, could be given to a new home or humanely destroyed. Whatdya think?
  13. Well, you know, dogs will be dogs!
  14. I am curious to know what the status is of this little forecourt area they have roped off. Do they own it? Have they the legal right to do so? Anyone know?

  16. If you forward this thread to at least ten people...God will love you! Now, that is stupid. Joking apart, I for one would like to thank LizzyGotDizzy for flagging this up, even if it is a hoax. I mean let's face it, the reason the three digit security number was placed on the back was so that one side only copies of the card couldn't be used fraudulently. Therefore, even if it is a hoax it seems to be one that could perhaps COULD ACTUALLY HAPPEN! Good point as well about banks calling you up and asking you to confirm your details without you having any idea who they are! This is so ridiculous. I have terminated several calls from people who claimed to be calling from my bank as I couldn't know for sure. It's a good one to use with debt collectors as well >:D<

Only a few weeks ago someone tried to steal my two rottweilers. We know this to be the case because we returned to where they had been tethered to find them chewing happily on a severed arm. The police were called and, when they fingerprinted the remains, they told us it belonged to a well-known local dog-napper! I think it might be wise for people to give careful consideration to exactly which dogs they attempt to pinch.
  18. Gloating is not in my nature, old chap, particularly as I know people who have heavy property exposure and who I don't wish to see come to harm. I merely think the housing debate is so geared culturally towards buying that some redress or rebalance is useful.
  19. Doom mongering? Well, I guess it beats living in a fantasy inflationary bubble. I think people might find that thousands of years of human history have taught us that shooting the messenger makes no difference to the facts whatsoever. It has always struck me as interesting that one can pretty much guess who the folks are who are geared to the hilt, dependent upon house price inflation and terrified of negative equity by the testiness with which they respond to even the most objective evidence that everything in the garden isn't rosy. Also by their willingness to see themselves as more skilled oracles of the housing markets than the professionals whose job it is to predict what may happen and also WHAT IS ALREADY CLEARLY HAPPENING!!! I was called a doom-monger when I brought this up a good few months ago and got the same type of response "People are always saying house prices will fall", "It'll never happen in East Dulwich" etc etc. Now that there is tangible statistical evidence that it is happening, people say the same thing only louder! Well, it may provide short-term comfort for people to take a head-in-the-sand, or King Canute approach to financial affairs but, long-term, I think a healthy relationship with reality is likely to be more productive. I do not own property or intend to buy any (in London at any rate) so I have no hidden agenda. If my posts persuade some would-be buyers to at least take a slightly more balanced perspective on house-buying (whatever their ultimate decision is) then they will have served a positive function. Oh, and - Nothing new here? Sorry, but I wasn't aware that the October and November house price figures were old-hat. Perhaps they were actually announced months ago and I just didn't notice them.

Perhaps so, Karter, but a new branch will have taken a fair wee bit of upfront Capex and they will need to recover that. So, no matter how well they may appear to be doing, I am sure that some people will be gloating that the current housing market won't necessarily make that easy for them?
  21. Although I do occasionally pop into Nero I still think their high-handedness and contempt for the law needs addressed. Also I harbour a bitter resentment against them for stopping their wonderful single portion Tirimasu!!! That is a crime that cannot be forgiven!
  22. There has been discussion before on ED's second favourite subject - house prices; and it might be interesting to speculate whether Foxtons have picked the right time to open glittering new branches. Four new(ish) bits of info: 1. HSBC's Chief UK economist has stated the view that British houses are over-priced by 30%! 2. Last month the International Monetary Fund stated they were over-priced by 40%! 3. Nationwide have stated that house-prices slid 0.8% in November - the biggest slide since June 1995! 4. Earlier this week, Land Registry figures suggested that London house prices dropped at their fastest rate in more than two years during October! All of this, of course, comes on top of other research I quoted some months ago from ABN Amro, Nationwide, Chartered Institute of Surveyors and Savills. Remember where you heard it first. Perhaps Foxtons move to ED will not begin on a high after all?
  23. It SHOULD be Bonnie Portmore.
  24. But she does drink it out of such fashionable crystal glasses - she is a very sophisticated dipso.
