  1. ditta-on-tees, I think you may find my lovely if you care to read back over DJKQ's previous posts, I was the one being accused of looking back with some rose tinted view of the not so distant past. Those were my experiences of this area, sorry if they arnt upto yours or anyone elses understanding, but thats just how I see it! I agree many of our great industries such as car manufacturing and ship building have been destroyed, it is absolutely criminal in my eyes, and that is why such great former towns and cities as Sheffield, Bradford, Manchester, Glasgow, Newcastle and indeed Liverpool have all been laid to waste over the past 30 odd years, but dont blame me, that is just a fact, and that's what I was raising with DJKQ earlier! As for people being 'forced' to move to Peckham, well that isnt entirely true. Mnay people are put here, or are encouraged here due to various diaspora in the area through word of mouth or family ties. Peckham has just as little going for it as any number of working class inner city areas, but unlike many of it's great inner London rivals, the investment in Peckham has not materialised into gentrification or anything even close to that, and this in my opinion is why so many people such as myself hark back to the days of Jones and Higgins because we remember our families and our friends and the great times we had in what was pretty much a safe working class neighbourhood. Louisa.
  2. DJKQ and you call me inflammatory? Your previous post is the biggest slur on this message board today and if you read any of my previous posts you would see that I am one of the biggest advocates of traditional working class neighbourhoods, regardless of whatever slur you appear to be making in your previous post. As I have always noted on here, people of all backgrounds have noted the decline in the shopping area spread along Rye Lane, and the fact that food standards and hygiene standards are at best 'poor' along that stretch of shops! You suggest the Northern half of Liverpool is middle class, by whose standards do we compare? Incidently if you come from a middle class background what could you possibly know about the struggle of working class people in London? I've lived here all my life and I have as much right as anyone to tell people my opinion on what I believe has happened to the area I live in. You make many assumptions in your posts my love (something you blindly accuse me of doing by wrapping me up in some troll catergory), but at the end of the day you dont know me and will never understand the background and poverty my family were forced through, and we still lived in a Peckham where we would live our front and back doors open because everyone knew everyone else. I dont need a lecture from some university educated middle class scouser on "harking back to better times" - I was there, dont patronise me with your words. Louisa.
  3. I reckon the person spewing all that nonsense around ED was good old scouser girl DJKQ! Either that or her dodgy accent just automatically makes her spit it out as she speaks hehe... No that was unfair, I love you really DJKQ! You are a bit of a card actually! Although, I wouldnt fancy getting on the wrong side of you again, I like my tyres on my car lmao :)) I wish some people would get a sense of humour button. Oh and for the record, this isnt a trolling post, lots of people have noticed suspicious pools of you know what dotted around the PR area and they have increased in frequency in recent weeks too!! Louisa.
  4. DJKQ, I am more than happy to talk about areas I like in a positive manner, where do I begin? Plenty of posts where I talk fondly of Chiswick, Dulwich Village, Bromley, North Devon et al. I've been to the north many times, and I really do think that huge areas of it need knocking down, your precious hometown of Liverpool is an ugly derelict place that time has forgotten about. I've been there many times and all I see greeting me on the roads and streets into the city centre is boarded up old buildings and factories on the verge of collapse, so I completely understand why you would think Peckham or Brixton is amazing in comparison, I also understand why you live down here, if I were you i'd have made similar choices myself! But for those of us lucky enough to be born and raised in London, areas like Peckham are no longer appealing ad theyve lost their heart and soul because folk like you advocate and support perfectly respectable working class communities being turned into slums. I shouldnt use the term slum on a northerner, you probably think i'm being nice about the place. Anyway my love, no hard feelings, just my opinion! :)) Louisa.
  5. DJKQ I am not out of touch with the world around me, and I find you extremely patronising tbh. You came down here less than 20 years ago from Liverpool, anywhere you live is going to be better than that s*ithole isnt it? Even if Peckham is a dive, it doesnt top the derelict streets and houses of scouser land does it? I have lived in Peckham and ED most of my life, if I choose to have this opinion then that is upto me, you can disagree as much as you like, but you wont change my mind - nor will anyone else! Louisa.
  6. Sean, you have used to word 'troll' with me, often times, when it is highly inappropriate to do so. Plenty of examples on here if you want evidence, though i'm sure you can think of plenty of times too. I often find with you, if I have said something that you find difficult to respond to or disagree with you like to play the 'troll' card, because I wind you up, fair play, as I said to Jah, it really doesn't bother me at all! When I have been invited to the drinks, I often feel that it is an attempt to get me there and corner me on my opinions, and to be fair, as much as I argue my corner, I never disallow others to have their say, repugnant or not. Peckham is a shadow of its former self, that is my opinion, perhaps my language can often be a little lively or in some eyes provocative - but that is my way of doing things, if you disagree then fair enough, it really isnt an issue for me. However, when it comes to being ganged up on, which I have been numerous times on here, there is your answer as to why I fail to attend the group meetings at various locations. Louisa.
  7. Jah Lush, I keep forgetting that you are in the EDF drink meet up society, and along with Sean and a few others like to put anyone down who doesn't agree with their stated opinion, or indeed resort to calling them a "troll", so if that is what you view me as because I dont tow the party line when it comes to being an independent person with my own point of view, fire away, call me what you will! I wouldn't want Sean or anyone else banning you from the drinks click would i? :-) DJKQ, thanks for proving my point about the use of the word 'troll', clearly you dont have a mind of your own, i'm sure Jah is very proud of you :-) BTW just because someone elses opinion is different to yours, it doesn't make them any less worth listening to you than you, maybe that's something you should learn in your wiser older years you claim to be in? If indeed, your view is a healthy one to have at your time in life (as you argue), perhaps you could explain to a large section of the local population what a 'healthy outlook' is? From where i'm standing, i'm seeing a middle aged woman trying to look hip (like one of those patronising old vicars trying to increase his stock on a Sunday morning). Good luck with that though my love. Cate, getting back to topic, as interesting as it is that Brixton market featured in the NYT, it's kind of appropriate to suggest that Brixton isnt actually on most tourist maps as a place to visit like say.. Camden, Portobello RD et al.. therefore something must be going wrong surely? Louisa.
  8. What is great about Peckham? Name me one thing. It is a stinky, smelly, crime ridden place that needs a nuking! People like you with your "i live to celebrate the diverse makeup of south london.. blah blah" what a load of old crap. It's because of people like you that areas like Peckham are allowed to thrive, and nothing constructive is ever done about them! You've lived here two decades you say? I've lived here a lot longer and I remember it being a lot better, so I dont need someone like you who has no life experience telling me how I should remember better times thanks all the same. Louisa.
  9. DJKillaQueen, can you name ANY inner-London suburb where property prices arnt high? Dont be ridiculous! Property prices dont reflect how great an area is, they reflect where it is and what transport links it has! Dont ever get a job as an estate agent :)) Jah Lush, another constructive argument from you I see. Shouldn't you be down the co-op buying some fair trade hairspray? Louisa.
  10. DJKillaQueen, I've lived in and around Peckham all my life, so I know all of these areas you talk about. You clearly have not lived here as long as I have, or else you would remember what it used to be like. Peckham and Brixton were once great places to shop, great places for a night out too, they are both far worse than they used to be (more especially Peckham). The only reason Brixton now has a few decent eateries and bars is because it is next to Clapham and the knock on effect has clearly helped. Depending on what age group you fit into, fine, Brixton and Peckham are great places, but I for one think that both areas are a complete waste of time for shopping, eating, drinking and/or anything else! (other than transport links in Brixton relative to other parts of S.London). Louisa.
  11. The market in Brixton is almost as vile as the indoor one in Peckham (maybe slightly less smelly). Brixton is a grimey, old, victorian neighbourhood that is in desperate need of knocking down and being rebuilt (like most of inner south London). The shopping centre is a shadow of it's former self it just happens to be on a tube line and so attracts the wannabe 'edgy student' brigade who cant afford to live in a nice part of north London on a tube line (Islington, Camden et al)... So if you are poor but wanna think you're rich, move to Brixton and live next door to a crack house, you still have the tube nearby! ;-) Louisa.
  12. indiej25, no doubt you are one of these inner city cultural despots (probably born in Hertfordshire or Surrey) who move into a place like Brixton because you think it's 'edgy'. Let's just take what you say with a pinch of salt, we all know Brixton is a s*ithole lol... I've lived in South London long enough to know what's good and what's not! Louisa.
  13. Brixton isnt anything special, the best thing about it is the fact there happens to be a decent link to the west end via the tube. The two biggest iconic brands as you drive into the place are a giant KFC on one corner, and a McD's on the other - need I say more? Anyway, dont bother going to Brixton. Just drive through it, simple! Louisa.
  14. Rather than go through the hassle of creating yet another emoticon for the forum, the Admin staff, in their wisdom, could just deligate the rolling eyes icon to dubluke. Therefore, whenever someone is in need of some rolling eyes, bring on you with a post saying "Where's the rolling eyes icon when needed" - dont you think that would work just as well? It may even gain you some notoriety! Louisa.
  15. dubluke Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > > where's the rolling eyes icon on this forum? Maybe you could now be it as there isnt one? Louisa.
  16. Really Sean? I really think you should consider investing in a bullet proof vest and possibly a stun gun, those back lanes into Lambeth can be trecherous places as you and Lady Mac have no doubt discovered already! Out of interest, how many times have you been murdered? :-S Louisa.
  17. Sean, great idea, walk down through Herne Hill and into Brixton and probably get mugged, shot, raped and potentially murdered! Brilliant! Why didnt I think of that one? :)-D Louisa.
  18. Maybe if the Farmers market relocated to somewhere like GG or PR it would do better? Most of the people who would go to this type of market would not want to be heading down into Peckham to have to buy the goods. Anyway, who needs a decent fruit and veg stall and some decent sausage meat when you've got those gorgeous grocery stores spread (literally) along Rye Lane? :)) Louisa.
  19. I'm not sure if anyone else has been made aware, but in the last month or so, especially up around the junction with Peckham Rye/EDR (and the surrounding back roads) puddles of vommit have appeared at random locations. I wouldnt usually raise this, but all of the vommit looks suspiciously similar, which to me would suggest someone or something is producing the ghastly mess on their todd. I was out with my friend last week and we noticed that one of these puddles had been strategically aimed into a gorgeous rose bush just off of the Barry Road/Upland Road junction. My hunch is that one person is leaving a pub late in the evening and for whatever reason is depositing their pukey load in apparantly inconspicuous locations. If anyone else notices a pile of puke in or around any of the places mentioned (or indeed somewhere else) please let me know because I want this person to be caught and sent to a GP at the very least (they must be terribly dehydrated), and we may be able to get a few PCSO's on the lookout for the phantom puker too. Louisa.
  20. The 37 bus is probably the worst bus in the world, officially. Often late, always packed, full of trouble makers (especially early evening). Just drive for cry eye! So much easier! Louisa.
  21. Walker's were formerly a predominantly midlands based firm - with the factory being based in Leicester. I can remember, right up until the mid 1990's, Golden Wonder being the predominant crisp in London, with most pubs selling Smith's or Tavern Snack varities. I agree with many comments about the uniformity of pubs these days, why would anyone want to go to a pub and munch on a bit of stale Italian bread dipped in posh vinegar and oil with a bottle of crystal to wash it down with? (in areas like ED anyhow). I think the Smith's brand name has been an integral part of the public house institution(in London) anyway since Frank Smith first sold crisps at the pubs of Cricklewood in the 1920's. As for pork scratchings, Mr.Louisa reliably informs me theyve been selling them since 1400 or somewhere in that era. Why should we allow a few gastropubs to destroy those old traditions by forcing us into eating rubbish produce which we get overcharged for (and i'm not even talking about the Walker's crisps here). Louisa
  22. Smith's pub snack rance is more akin to a south london boozer than a pot of cashew nuts! Anyway, the last time I saw a pickled egg behind the bar was at a small pub in Ramsgate, that must have been five years ago now. I'm pretty sure the Hope along Rye Lane sell more traditional pub snacks, but i've not been in there for a while so wouldnt know anymore. I feel like starting a ED petition to bring back pickled eggs and scampi fries, i've had enough of cashew nuts and Walkers crisps. Louisa.
  23. I popped intoThe Plough earlier on this afternoon for a sneaky half, and it has come to my attention that most of the now gastro type public houses in ED no longer sell traditional bar snacks such as the Smith's range of Scampi Fries, or the likes of pork scratchings, pickled egg's et al. Is it just me who has noticed this? Does anyone else care enough to respond? I really miss the days when you could pop into a pub and ask the bartender to reach high up and grab a pack of Cheesy Bites or Frazzles. Anyone know of a pub still selling them within the ED area? Louisa.
  24. SeanMacGabhann Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Louisa trolling again. But if she could stop > being so smug and actually show how any individual > has changed from pro waitrose to "bothered" I > might pay more attention. Sean it's exactly this sort of response that has forced so many regular ED forumites to abandom posting on here anymore! Keef, as you rightly point out, it is a bit of fun.. and as you are more aware than probably anyone else, a large contingent of people on here were singing the praises of Waitrose setting up shop around here, smugly grinning away like a Cheshire cat as if ED had bagged the first SE London Waitrose long before any evidence of them opening up around here even existed! And now that Sydenham looks as though it is in line for a store all of this lot on here either pass off what I say as nonsense, (apparantly there never was some sort of embargo to get a store setup around here... look back at the old threads my friends and you'll see otherwise) or they dismiss me as "trolling again". As for you giggirl, i've told you what the "point" of this thread is all about, clearly you cannot understand or choose not to if you fail to understand the point of my threads, I dont really understand the point in your response to be fair! Anyway, I wont bother talking to you about this anymore.. it's boring me! Louisa.
