I want to eventually move out of ED. but most certainly not to one of the horrible Home Counties, i'd rather be a real area with genuine community life going on. I have always had an affection for north Devon, and as and when I decide ED has become slightly overbearing, that shall be my destination of choice. But for all it's worth, if people decide to sell up and move out of ED (more than likely older residents from a working class background) then I say good luck to them, and if someone from a different social class wishes to spend their money on buying the property then equally good luck to them too. I just dont like the way it's all happening so fast, and the way in which longstanding locals feel the need to move out because the area no longer accomodates them. I would certainly say the number of shops I choose to visit has greatly decreased in the last decade.

Sainsbury's have tried over the supermarket years (from the mid 1970's to present in the UK), to concentrate a large number of stores in the south-east of England, and London in particular, to exploit the "middle-class grocers" label for all it's worth. However, with the onset of Waitrose in towns like Sevenoaks, Maidstone and Bromley, and M&S recovering with an outstanding range of high quality goods, Sainsbury's has been forced to branch out, and so though they clearly do not have the variety and quality across the board like Waitrose and M&S, they like to foll people in the posh parts of town by opening up these so called "flagship stores", where they sell a larger range of goods and charge extraordinary prices for all goods across the range throughout store, even though other stores in poorer areas are selling these products for much less. It's a complete travesty, and it makes me wonder why on earth Waitrose dont just setup store on DKH instead. At least thats genuine quality for higher prices! :)

That fruit and veg place had been there for years... I loved it.. The older lady used to work there too, thats a real shame that had to go :)

The lady who ran the top shop now works in a bakers in Peckham.. Gregs I believe.. :)

The fact you dont think Sainsbury's is on a par with any of the other major supermarkets is deluded and amusing, but anyway back to my point. "crappy chippes" ooo now thats getting defensive for no apparant reason, have you tried any of these other chip shops? I've been to the Seacow ONCE, so maybe you should broaden your horizon a little.. and as for Sainsburys, well they have hiked their prices for the same products you can get in other places, thats a fact.. "slums of the victorian age" Actually no, although the way you wrote that seems to suggest that ED was once a slum from the victorian era, which of course is not true, and those who think the area has naturally changed for the better because they are living their should remove the plum from mouth and d*ldo from ar*e, and get on with it! :)

It gets my back up when whole areas are forced to change to accomodate people with these "lifesyle choices" - what you choose to do is your business, but when I have to have it forced upon me with "Seacow" and all other sorts of places, including a Sainsbury's which goes out of it's way to sell a wider range of products (dubious) to accomodate these "lifestyle choices", and then hike the bloody prices, i'm not best pleased, so thats what gets my back up Asset :)

mockney, for all we know they may well be doing this... let's ask one of the fish experts on the forum, I believe Asset know his stuff :)

Feel free to be ripped off - and by the way, ASDA before it was bought out by Walmart, started a specially targeted campaign to get it's produce from local locations, and alongside Tesco and Waitrose, is now helping dairy farmers in this country by sourcing from small holders and local suppliers, I wonder if your treasured Sainsburys is doing this too?

Living in the 1950s? ermm actually no, I think in terms of whos living in what era, i'd say you are living on a different planet to me and most people in the UK ... If you fancy Red Snapper, either have a nice trip around the carribbean, or go to a fancy London restaurant, it's not the domain of a chippie, and places which are trying to pretend to be something better than a chippy even though thats pretty much all they are, selling the odd fancy fish from some far flug location, are deeply annoyingly found in gentrified/posh bits of London.. Glad to see you support the local fishermen who work hard for low wages in the UK btw by eating produce which has been flown thousands of miles across an ocean (though still apparantly fresh) to be served in some pretentious excuse for a fish and chip shop in ED. :)
-
Asset, you obviously dont venture out of London because the chippies in places like Hastings Hull amongst other places not necessarily starting with the letter H (hehe), actually do sell fish straight out of the sea, and thats the freshest you can buy, if its sold in a London chippy, dont expect fresh, you can kid yourself in your own little world as much as you want, but it isnt fresh! if you fancy red snapper, go to the carribbean, then its definitely going to be fresh I can assure you :)

Asset, your comments are amusing.. "inverted snob" never been called that before hehe.. you know as well as I do these people are not getting anything better in the Seacvow as they would get at a "traditional chippy" (if that exists in London), but you like to champion the cause for snobbery because it suitsyour needs, very funny, well you can continue being ripoped off, its your money lol and... Keef... who rattled your cage today? I didnt think the ED bedrooms were big enough to fall out of the wrong side of the bed in the mornings! lol... anyway, dont take offence to my comments, I just like to tell it as I see it, and it annoys me how people think they can live in their own little suburban London dream world when in fact the same product down the road can be bought cheaper.. its just funny thats all :) have a drink on me!
-
I actually think thats all a load of nonsense with the greatest respect Ted Max... Sometimes fish straight out the sea which has been frozen within hours is the very best fish you can buy! It retains its freshness, and is in no worse state once it has been defrosted! Fresh fish is just not factual sorry to destroy your illusion, very typical in London may I add.. "fresh as you can buy" hmm forgive me but you've lost me on this one, my uncle was in the fishmongering business for many years and I am pretty sure I didnt ever hear him mention one product being any fresher than the others, especially since certain batches of fish came from the same location! all the London chippies get their fish from pretty much the same wholesalers, so that comment is slightly dubious.. I am pretty much 100% sure Seacow does the same as every other ED chippy, but the placebo effect seems to pull the wool over some peoples eyes apparantly!

judging by half the people on here, it will come wrapped in gold gift wrapping and placed in a special "keep it warm" box with a ribbon on top haha
-
I honestly dont understand this... Seacow is now selling fresh fish!! Fresh fish comes from the sea and is then sent in ice to London's markets and sold to wholesalers who then sell the fish on to the fishmongers and/or chippies/restaurants etc.. The point here is, if you dont go to a coastal town where the actual fish is caught, it isnt going to be fresh, its going to have been stuck in ice!! lol... Why so many gullible people think that because its out on display fresh the guy can charge triple the price for the same product you can get down the road for half the price! it's ludicrious in my opinion, and I also think the quality of the batter and the chips is nothing more than average.. The Seacow is a typical example of a business aimed at people who want to think theyre getting something special!! well trust me you most certainly are not.. :)

Sainsburys employ a great marketing campaign in posh areas/gentrified parts of town, by selling overpriced goods to people who think they're getting something special. Some of the Sainsburys stores i've been to outside of London are awful, and they do not sell half the brands you would find in a London store. Morrisons is good honest value, a genuine northern store with plenty of quality and no icing on top. I quite like ASDA for this reason too, and dare I say it, even Tesco (cringe) :)

As a footnote to the Grove Tavern in it's glory days, Take a look at this wonderful picture of the Grove back in a sleepy suburban ED almost a hundred years ago. http://www.ideal-homes.org.uk/images/southwark/dulwich/lordship-lane-00632-640.jpg
