  1. How about Girl Guiding. There are a number of Rainbows, Brownies & Guides units that meet locally which are desperate for volunteers. You would be working with other volunteers and can choose to train to become a fully registered leader - or just come along on the evenings to help out. (Yes, I am one of those leaders - so have a declared interest!). You can register here - https://www.girlguiding.org.uk/get-involved/become-a-volunteer/register-your-interest/ Or send me a PM if you want to know more or visit a unit before committing.
  2. I saw the first episode - thought it was a strong start. Also thought it was (hopefully) shaping up to be a UK Buffy. The demon in fluffy slippers was very Anya (but were they bunnies - perhaps not Anya after all). Got the second one taped.
  3. Flamin Mangal is great. We've had a couple of Saturday night dinners there - brought our own booze from Asda (side note - why is there always such a rubbish selection of lager at Asda?). Stuffed ourselves stupid and still only cost about ?25 for the two of us. We are both Veggie and had loads to choose from even if it isn't the type of place that would usually spring to mind - what with the spinning kebab things in the window.
  4. I'd love to know too - it was one of my resolutions this year to finally learn to swim (and I'm a lot older than 28!) Tracy
  5. I went to the Unicorn last night about 9:00 and it was packed. I really liked it there - bar was busy but the staff were great at getting through the orders (amazing on the first night). Food was going down well from what I could see - but I didn't try. I think they have a "pop-up" in there until they get the kitchen running - like they did at the Hope. Young-ish crowd, mid to late-twenties for the most part but there were quite a few like me bringing up the median! Its definitely a shabby-chic vibe - like most of the Antic pubs - but I really like that. Prices were average for the area - pint (the hepcat) and a decent glass of wine for ?9:25.
  6. It is not a good world where there are people who can afford a ?4 loaf and those that can't - and I will stand with anyone trying to make a world where everyone has the same choices that I have. But, as I am lucky enough to be able to afford that extra, is it not better that I am spending it with a local business who will employ extra people at the new bakery? Rather than giving it to Mr Sainsbury/Tesco/Lidl (insert your supermarket of choice) where it will just mean another loaf on the automated production line in some bread factory (they are not bakeries) - that will not employ another person whether they are making 100,000 or 200,000 loaves - and it's and extra few pennies in the shareholders pockets? I know this is probably reading a bit too much into the purchase of a loaf of bread - but if I am acting in a way that harms society as a whole - I do want to know so that I can make a better choice. (I can't believe I've been stupid enough to put my head over the forum parapet over the price of a loaf of bread!).
  7. On the rate that breads go stale... I buy a loaf of BrickHouse white sourdough every Saturday morning from Andersons at, yes, I admit it, ?4 a loaf. I eat about 2 slices a day - so I am usually eating the last crust a week later for breakfast (just before heading out for my next loaf!) - and it is still as soft inside (and crusty outside) as the day I bought it. I do keep it in a very nice bread bin though.
  8. It must have been a local thing. I used M&S for a flower delivery yesterday - but delivery was to Cardiff. They were delivered before lunch.
  9. The Girl Guides unit in Kennington would love to have more volunteers (male or female) to help us run our weekly (term-time) Rainbows (age 5-7), Brownies (7-10) and Girl Guides (10-14). You do not have to commit to every week as we run a rota for those who could help occasionally. We meet on Tuesdays at St Paul?s Church Hall, Lorrimore Square Kennington Rainbows ? 5:00 to 6:00 pm Brownies and Guides 6:00 to 7:30 pm. Although we meet at the church, we are not a religious organisation and have no affiliation with any religion. If you are interested, please contact me via Personal Message with your email and/or telephone number (and a convenient time for me to give you a call).
  10. My husband and I are both vegetarians, have been for many (over 20) years. We don't eat any fish or shellfish. I find this complaint about not having veggie options quite old-fashioned. Veggie eating out in the UK has come on leaps and bounds in the last 10 years or so. Yes, I do not have the same choice as a meat eater - but I have chosen to restrict myself. Most places will have at least 2 options and a lot will modify other dishes when asked. It helps that my favourite foods are Italian and Indian. The caveat to that is I never go to French restaurants - there's just no point as the veggie option will be a tasteless pile of overcooked vegetables. Chinese and Spanish/Tapas can be a bit hit and miss too - some places have a great choice, others don't. But the point to this is, I chose this lifestyle, I cannot expect others to cater for it to the level that the meat-eating majority get. I check menus before eating out and if there is nothing I want on it - I go somewhere else.
  11. And Peckham's finest - on a bin at one of the bus stops on Peckham Road. Made me grin anyway.
  12. I'd be interested, I think I have skills that would be useful to others and could certainly benefit from the experience of others - and it would be nice to meet more people in the area as I've only lived in ED for 6 months (I didn't move from Clapham!).
  13. I'm a Guide leader in Kennington and there are a number of local packs meeting on various days. To send your details through the authorised channels go to: http://www.girlguiding.org.uk/get_involved/volunteer.aspx It's a great way to volunteer.
